Chapter 11: The Man Who Claimed to Be Maya's Father
The courthouse was nearly empty when we arrived.
It was an old building with marble floors, dark wooden doors, and photographs of former judges lining the walls.
Darius carried the music box.
I carried Claire's letter.
Richard walked beside us, speaking quietly with the police officers.
Stephen Miller was waiting in a small conference room.
He looked older than he had in the photographs, with silver hair and a neatly trimmed beard.
But his eyes were exactly as I remembered them from the photograph outside Claire's hospital.
Cold.
Calculating.
He stood when Darius entered.
"Hello, Darius.""
Darius didn't offer his hand.
"Where is my daughter?""
Stephen glanced at the music box.
"So you found it.""
"Where is Maya?""
"She's safe.""
"Put her on the phone.""
Stephen sighed.
"You always were impatient.""
Darius stepped closer.
"Don't talk to me like we're friends.""
Stephen sat down.
"I suppose Claire never told you about me.""
Darius placed the paternity report on the table.
"She told me enough.""
Stephen examined the paper.
Then he gave a small smile.
"Then you know the truth.""
"Are you Maya's biological father?""
Stephen folded his hands.
"Yes.""
The room went silent.
Darius looked at him for a long moment.
Then he asked the question I hadn't expected.
"Did Claire love you?""
Stephen's expression changed slightly.
"That's not relevant.""
"It is to me.""
Stephen leaned back.
"We were married. We had a relationship. Things ended badly.""
"And then she married me.""
"Yes.""
"Without telling me you existed.""
Stephen shrugged.
"She wanted a different life.""
Darius stared at him.
"Then why did you come back?""
Stephen's smile disappeared.
"Because Claire promised me something.""
"What?""
"That Maya would never be separated from her biological family.""
Darius laughed bitterly.
"She had a family. She had me.""
Stephen's voice hardened.
"You were never her biological father.""
Darius leaned forward.
"I changed her diapers. I held her when she was sick. I sat beside her hospital bed when she had pneumonia.
I taught her how to ride a bicycle. I was there when she took her first steps.""
Stephen said nothing.
Darius continued.
"You don't get to walk into her life seven years later and call yourself Daddy because a piece of paper says you share DNA.""
Stephen looked toward Richard.
"Is he always this emotional?""
Richard remained expressionless.
"Only when someone takes his child.""
Stephen's jaw tightened.
"Let's discuss the actual reason we're here.""
He removed a document from his briefcase.
It was an agreement dated six years earlier.
Claire had signed it.
Stephen had signed it.
And beneath their signatures was the name of a witness.
Catherine Miller.
Darius read the first paragraph.
Then he stopped.
The agreement stated that Stephen would permanently relinquish any claim to parental custody or financial rights concerning Maya in exchange for a substantial settlement.
Darius looked up.
"Claire paid you to stay away?""
Stephen nodded.
"She wanted to protect her marriage.""
"How much?""
"Enough.""
Richard examined the document.
"Was the agreement ever registered with the court?""
Stephen avoided his eyes.
"No.""
"Then it has limited legal effect.""
Stephen smiled.
"Perhaps. But the financial transfers are real.""
Darius's expression darkened.
"You're the person who received money from Colebridge Holdings.""
"Your grandfather's company owed me.""
"Why?""
Stephen leaned forward.
"Because I helped establish the trust that protects Maya's inheritance. I know exactly how much money is involved.""
Richard opened his briefcase.
"Mr. Miller, the transfers you're referring to are under investigation.""
Stephen ignored him.
"Claire made a mistake when she chose Darius. She knew that. She spent years trying to convince herself otherwise.""
Darius's hands curled into fists.
"Don't you dare speak about my wife.""
Stephen smiled faintly.
"She was my wife first.""
Darius took a step forward.
Richard immediately placed a hand on his arm.
"Don't.""
Darius stopped.
Then Stephen said something that changed the atmosphere completely.
"Claire didn't just hide the paternity test from you. She hid something else.""
Darius stared at him.
"What?""
Stephen opened another folder.
Inside was a photograph of Claire holding a newborn baby.
Darius recognized the hospital blanket.
He had taken that photograph himself.
But the date printed on the back was different from the date Maya was born.
He looked confused.
"What's this?""
Stephen pointed toward the baby.
"That's Maya.""
"Of course it is.""
"No. Look at the date.""
Darius examined it.
The photograph had been taken three days after Maya's recorded birth date.
He frowned.
"What's your point?""
Stephen leaned forward.
"Claire gave birth to Maya before she married you. She told you the pregnancy was shorter than it really was.""
Darius looked at Richard.
The attorney's expression had become serious.
"Is that possible?"" Darius asked.
Richard examined the photograph.
"Potentially. But the hospital records would need to be reviewed.""
Stephen continued.
"Claire was already pregnant when we separated. She wanted to raise the baby with me, but I wasn't ready. Then she met you.""
Darius shook his head.
"You're lying.""
"Am I?""
Stephen slid another document across the table.
It was a hospital record.
The mother's name was Claire Bennett.
The father's name was left blank.
But there was a handwritten note beneath it.
*Biological father: Stephen Miller.*
Darius stared at it.
His entire face seemed to collapse.
Richard picked up the paper.
"This record has no independent verification.""
Stephen shrugged.
"Believe whatever makes you comfortable.""
Then Darius asked the question that made Stephen stop smiling.
"If you were so interested in being Maya's father, why did you take money to disappear?""
Stephen looked toward the window.
For the first time, he seemed uncomfortable.
"Because Claire made me an offer.""
"And you accepted.""
"Yes.""
"Then why come back?""
Stephen leaned forward.
"Because the money stopped.""
Darius stared.
"What?""
"Your grandfather's company was supposed to make annual payments. After Claire died, the payments stopped. I contacted Catherine, and she told me the family had changed the arrangement.""
Richard looked up sharply.
"Who authorized those payments?""
Stephen ignored him.
"Vanessa promised to help me recover what I was owed.""
Darius's expression turned cold.
"So you and my wife planned this together.""
Stephen didn't deny it.
Then a police officer entered the room.
"Mr. Miller, we need you to come with us.""
Stephen stood.
"On what grounds?""
"We have evidence connecting you to the unauthorized removal of a minor and attempted financial fraud.""
Stephen looked at Darius.
"You think you've won?""
Darius stepped closer.
"No. I think my daughter deserves better than all of us.""
The officer escorted Stephen toward the door.
But just before leaving, Stephen turned around.
"Ask Richard about the second birth certificate.""
Darius frowned.
"What second birth certificate?""
Stephen smiled.
"Ask him why Claire registered Maya's birth twice.""
Then he walked away.
Darius turned toward the attorney.
"Richard?""
The attorney didn't answer.
Instead, he opened his briefcase and removed a sealed envelope.
"I was hoping we wouldn't have to discuss this today.""
Darius stared at him.
"What's inside?""
Richard placed it on the table.
"The original birth registration. And a letter from Claire explaining why she requested a second copy.""
Darius opened the envelope.
The first page was a birth certificate.
The second was a hospital record.
The third was a handwritten letter.
He read the first line.
Then he looked at Richard.
May you like
His voice was barely audible.
"Why does this document list another woman as Maya's mother?""
