Chapter 6: The Promise Claire Made Before She Died

Richard Hale's office was located in an old brick building downtown.

Darius insisted we bring Maya with us, but I offered to keep her at home with Margaret.

She was already frightened enough.

Before we left, I sat beside her on the bed.

"Grandma, are you going somewhere?""

"Just for a little while, sweetheart.""

"Are you going to find out why Vanessa did it?""

I brushed a loose strand of hair away from her forehead.

"Yes.""

Maya hesitated.

"Can you ask someone to make her stop being mean?""

I kissed her cheek.

"That's exactly what we're going to do.""

She reached into her bedside drawer and pulled out a folded piece of paper.

It was a drawing.

A little girl in a purple dress stood between two adults. One had long brown hair. The other had short dark hair.

Above them, Maya had written:

*MY FAMILY.*

I recognized Claire immediately.

The other adult was Darius.

There was no Vanessa.

Maya noticed me looking.

"I drew Mommy and Daddy.""

I nodded.

"It's beautiful.""

She lowered her eyes.

"I didn't know where to put Vanessa.""

I hugged her.

"You don't have to draw anyone you don't want to.""

She folded the paper and placed it beneath her pillow.

"Will Daddy still be happy?""

I smiled.

"He loves you more than anything.""

That answer seemed to comfort her.

When Darius and I arrived at Richard's office, the attorney was waiting with a large brown envelope.

He was in his late sixties, with silver hair and the kind of serious expression that made people choose their words carefully.

"Mr. Cole," he said, shaking Darius's hand.

Then he looked at me.

"Mrs. Evelyn. It's been a long time.""

I nodded.

"Richard.""

He invited us to sit.

On his desk were several folders.

The top one had Claire's handwriting across the front.

*For Darius. Only if Maya's safety is ever threatened.*

Darius stared at it.

"Why didn't you send this to me after Claire died?""

"Because your wife instructed me not to release it unless specific conditions were met.""

"What conditions?""

Richard opened another folder.

"Claire believed Vanessa might eventually attempt to gain control over Maya's inheritance. She also suspected someone was helping her.""

Darius leaned forward.

"Who?""

Richard looked at him carefully.

"Her mother. Catherine.""

Darius rubbed his forehead.

"How long has this been going on?""

"Before your marriage.""

The words seemed to drain the air from the room.

Richard continued.

"Claire first contacted me after she discovered that someone had requested information about Maya's trust without authorization.""

"Vanessa?""

"At that time, we couldn't prove who had made the request.""

He removed a document from the folder.

"This is the original trust agreement. Maya's grandfather established it when she was born. Claire later added protective provisions.""

Darius examined the pages.

"What provisions?""

Richard pointed to a paragraph.

"The trust is exclusively for Maya. No spouse of either parent can become a beneficiary, trustee, or administrator simply through marriage.""

"That makes sense.""

"There's more. If anyone attempts to obtain control of the trust through fraud, coercion, or unauthorized guardianship proceedings, an independent review is automatically triggered.""

Darius looked up.

"And what happens?""

"The trust becomes temporarily inaccessible to everyone except the independent administrator until the investigation is completed.""

I frowned.

"Would that prevent Maya from using her education money?""

"Her essential expenses would still be covered. But nobody could withdraw funds for personal use.""

Darius nodded.

"Good.""

Richard opened another envelope.

"This is the document Claire asked me to keep separate.""

Inside was a letter.

Darius recognized the handwriting immediately.

His hands began to shake.

He read aloud.

My darling Darius,

If you're reading this, then something has happened that I desperately hoped would never happen.

I know you love Maya. I have never doubted that. But I also know how lonely you may feel after I'm gone. You deserve happiness, and I want you to find it.

Please don't confuse someone who wants to be loved by you with someone who is willing to love your daughter.

Darius stopped.

He swallowed.

Then continued.

I have concerns about Vanessa. I don't want to accuse her unfairly, but I've seen enough to know that Maya's future must be protected.

If you ever discover that someone has tried to separate you from our daughter, please don't ignore it.

And whatever happens, remember this: Maya is not a replacement for me. She is not a reminder of your pain. She is a little girl who needs her father.

Darius lowered the letter.

For several seconds, he couldn't speak.

Richard waited.

Then he opened a final envelope.

"There is another reason Claire asked me to preserve these documents.""

He placed a photograph on the desk.

It showed Claire, Catherine, Vanessa, and another woman standing outside a hospital.

The photograph had been taken several months before Claire died.

Darius pointed toward the woman standing beside Catherine.

"Who is that?""

Richard looked uncomfortable.

"Her name is Laura Bennett. She was the trust administrator's former assistant.""

"Why is she in this photograph?""

"Because she was the person who discovered the first unauthorized request concerning Maya's inheritance.""

Darius leaned back.

"What happened to her?""

"She resigned shortly afterward.""

"Why?""

Richard hesitated.

"She claimed someone had threatened to accuse her of financial misconduct if she continued investigating.""

I stared at the photograph.

Catherine was smiling.

Vanessa stood beside her, one hand resting on her mother's shoulder.

Claire looked tired.

But there was something else.

She was holding a document.

Richard enlarged the photograph on his computer.

The document was partly visible.

At the top, we could make out a heading.

*CHANGE OF TRUSTEE — MINOR BENEFICIARY.*

Darius stood.

"That photograph was taken before Claire died?""

"Yes.""

"And someone was already trying to change Maya's trust?""

Richard nodded.

"Claire stopped the application before it could be processed.""

Darius stared at the screen.

"Then why did Vanessa marry me?""

Richard didn't answer immediately.

Instead, he reached into the brown envelope and removed one final sheet.

It was a copy of a private investigator's report.

Darius began reading.

The report contained dates, bank transfers, and several names.

Then he reached the last page.

His face turned white.

"Mom.""

I moved closer.

"What is it?""

He pointed at a line near the bottom.

It listed a payment made to Vanessa three months before her wedding.

The amount was substantial.

But the recipient wasn't Vanessa.

It was Catherine.

The description beside the transfer read:

*SUCCESS FEE — FAMILY TRUST ACCESS.*

Darius looked at Richard.

"Who paid her?""

Richard folded his hands.

"That's what I was hoping you could help me establish.""

Darius turned the page.

A company name appeared beneath the transaction.

*Colebridge Holdings.*

My heart stopped.

It was the investment company owned by Darius's late father.

The company had been dissolved years ago.

At least, that was what we had believed.

Darius stared at the name.

"That company shouldn't exist.""

Richard nodded.

"It shouldn't.""

He pulled another document from the file.

"Which is why I need you to understand something before you leave this office.""

He placed a finger on the transaction date.

"The payment to Catherine was made eleven months before Vanessa married you.""

Darius slowly sat down.

Eleven months.

The exact month he had first introduced Vanessa to our family.

I looked at the photograph of Claire.

Then at the payment record.

And suddenly, something terrifying occurred to me.

Vanessa hadn't entered our family because she had fallen in love with Darius.

Someone might have sent her there.

Richard opened his mouth to explain.

But Darius's phone rang.

The caller ID showed the school.

He answered immediately.

"Hello?""

A woman's voice sounded frantic.

"Mr. Cole? This is Principal Harris from Maya's school. I'm calling because we've received an urgent request concerning your daughter.""

Darius stood.

"What kind of request?""

The principal hesitated.

"Someone has contacted us claiming to be Maya's temporary legal guardian.""

Darius gripped the phone.

"Who?""

There was a pause.

Then the principal gave him the name.

"Catherine Miller.""

Darius looked at Richard.

The attorney immediately reached for his own phone.

But the principal wasn't finished.

"There's one more thing, Mr. Cole.""

"What?""

"She says she's already collected Maya from school.""

Darius went completely still.

I felt the blood drain from my face.

Because Maya wasn't supposed to be at school that day.

And Catherine knew exactly where she was supposed to be.

The principal whispered:

"Mr. Cole, we believe your daughter may have been taken by someone who had no legal authority to do so.""

Darius was already running toward the door.

May you like

And for the first time since Claire's death, I heard my grandson scream a name with absolute terror in his voice.

"MAYA!""
