Chapter 13: The Insurance Money Was Never the Prize
Vanessa didn't deny filing the insurance claim.
She simply stood in the motel hallway, staring at the floor while two police officers waited beside her.
Darius held Maya in his arms.
My granddaughter had buried her face against his shoulder. Her little fingers clutched his shirt so tightly that the fabric had twisted beneath her hands.
"Vanessa," Darius said quietly.
She looked up.
"Why did you file a claim against Claire's life insurance?""
Vanessa wiped her cheeks.
"I didn't steal anything.""
"That's not what I asked.""
"I was following instructions.""
"Whose instructions?""
She glanced at Catherine.
Her mother immediately shook her head.
"Don't you dare.""
Vanessa looked back at Darius.
"You wouldn't understand.""
"Then explain it.""
Richard opened his briefcase.
"Before anyone says anything else, I want to make one matter clear. The insurance company has frozen the claim pending verification. Nobody is receiving that money today.""
Catherine's expression tightened.
"That money belongs to family.""
Richard turned toward her.
"Mrs. Miller, you have no legal interest in it.""
Catherine stepped forward.
"You have no idea what Claire promised us.""
Darius adjusted Maya in his arms.
"Then tell me what she promised.""
Catherine laughed bitterly.
"Claire promised that Stephen would be compensated for everything he lost.""
"Everything he lost?""
"His marriage. His child. His future.""
Darius looked at her.
"Stephen signed an agreement relinquishing his claims to Maya.""
"Because Claire forced him!""
Richard interrupted.
"She paid him a settlement. He accepted the money and signed the agreement voluntarily.""
Catherine pointed toward the attorney.
"That agreement was never meant to be permanent!""
"Then why did Stephen sign it?""
"Because he thought there would be more money later.""
The words escaped before Catherine could stop herself.
Everyone went silent.
Darius slowly lowered his daughter into my arms.
"What more money?""
Catherine closed her eyes.
Richard removed a bank statement.
"According to our records, there were several payments made from Colebridge Holdings to accounts connected to Stephen and Catherine over the past six years.""
Darius stared.
"Six years?""
"Yes.""
"Claire was paying them?""
Richard nodded.
"Not directly. The payments were arranged through an investment company.""
Catherine shook her head.
"Those payments were compensation.""
"For what?""
"For keeping a secret!""
Darius stepped toward her.
"What secret?""
Catherine looked at Vanessa.
Then she whispered:
"Stephen wasn't the only person who knew about Maya's biological father.""
Darius frowned.
"What are you talking about?""
Catherine looked directly at him.
"Your grandfather knew.""
The words struck like a slap.
Darius shook his head.
"My grandfather died before Maya was born.""
"Exactly.""
Richard immediately asked, "What evidence do you have?""
Catherine hesitated.
Then she looked toward Vanessa.
"Tell him.""
Vanessa began crying again.
"I can't.""
Catherine's voice became sharp.
"You've already destroyed everything. At least tell the truth.""
Vanessa looked at Darius.
"Your grandfather discovered the paternity issue before Claire died. He knew Stephen was Maya's biological father.""
Darius stared at her.
"How?""
"He had access to the original hospital records.""
Richard took a step forward.
"Where are those records?""
Vanessa swallowed.
"In a safe deposit box.""
"Whose?""
"Your grandfather's.""
Darius looked confused.
"My grandfather's estate was settled years ago.""
"Not everything," Richard said.
He took out his phone and made a call.
While he spoke, Vanessa continued.
"Claire was afraid Stephen would try to claim Maya. Your grandfather agreed to help her. He established the trust and arranged the insurance policy.""
Darius looked at her.
"Then why did you become involved?""
Vanessa lowered her head.
"Because Catherine told me the money was supposed to come to our family.""
"Which family?""
She didn't answer.
Darius's voice hardened.
"Vanessa, you married me. You lived in my house. You watched my daughter call you family. And all this time, you were planning to take money meant for her?""
"I loved you.""
"No. You loved what you thought you could get from me.""
Vanessa started sobbing.
"I didn't know how much it would hurt Maya.""
Darius stared at her.
"You cut off her hair.""
"I was angry!""
"You told her that her mother didn't want her.""
"I didn't mean it!""
"You took the dress her mother bought her and made her feel ashamed of wearing it.""
Vanessa covered her face.
Darius shook his head.
"Stop saying you didn't mean it. You had clippers in your hand. You made a choice.""
Maya lifted her head from my shoulder.
"Daddy?""
He immediately turned toward her.
"Yes, sweetheart?""
"Can we go home now?""
He walked toward us.
"Yes. We're going home.""
As we left the motel, Catherine shouted after him.
"You can't hide her from the truth forever!""
Darius stopped.
He turned around.
"She doesn't need to know every ugly thing adults have done. She needs to know that she's loved.""
Then he walked away.
That evening, Maya slept in my bedroom again.
She refused to let go of her father's hand until she was completely asleep.
Darius sat beside her for almost two hours.
I brought him tea.
He didn't touch it.
"Mom?""
"Yes?""
"Do you think Claire ever regretted choosing me?""
I sat beside him.
"Why would you ask that?""
"Because she knew Stephen was Maya's biological father. She knew there was a secret. She knew I might eventually find out.""
He looked at his daughter.
"And she still let me believe Maya was mine.""
I took his hand.
"She knew you loved Maya. Perhaps she was afraid that knowing the truth would change something.""
"Nothing could have changed how I felt about her.""
"I know.""
He looked down.
"Then why didn't she trust me?""
I had no answer.
A little later, Richard called.
He had received confirmation from the estate administrator.
The safe deposit box still existed.
And it contained a sealed envelope addressed to Darius.
The envelope had been placed there by his grandfather shortly before his death.
Richard said the contents might finally explain why Claire had hidden the truth.
But there was another detail.
The box had been accessed twice during the past year.
Once by Catherine.
And once by Vanessa.
Darius slowly stood.
"Then they already know what's inside.""
Richard's voice became serious.
"Perhaps.""
He paused.
"There's one more thing. Your grandfather left instructions that the envelope must only be opened in the presence of the person named as the final witness.""
"Who?""
Richard read the name.
Then he went silent.
"Darius, the final witness is someone you know.""
"Who?""
Richard answered.
"Your father.""
Darius stared at the phone.
"My father has been dead for eleven years.""
May you like
Richard exhaled.
"Then someone has been using his name.""
