Chapter 12: The Second Birth Certificate

Darius read the document again.

Then a third time.

The name on the birth certificate wasn't Claire Bennett.

It was Catherine Miller.

My hands began to shake.

"Richard, explain this.""

The attorney took a slow breath.

"Before I explain anything, I need you to understand that this document may not represent a legal change in parentage. It was part of an investigation Claire requested before her death.""

Darius looked at him.

"Why would Catherine's name appear on my daughter's birth certificate?""

Richard removed another paper from the envelope.

"This is the original hospital registration.""

The document listed Claire as Maya's mother.

Stephen was listed as the biological father.

But there was a handwritten notation beside Catherine's name.

*Emergency maternal contact.*

Darius frowned.

"Then why is there a second certificate?""

Richard turned the page.

"The second document was generated through a disputed registration process several months later.""

He pointed to the signature.

It was Catherine's.

"She submitted a request claiming that Claire had authorized her to act as Maya's temporary guardian during a period of medical treatment.""

I stared at him.

"Did Claire authorize that?""

Richard shook his head.

"Not according to the evidence we have.""

Darius looked sick.

"So Catherine tried to become Maya's legal mother?""

"She attempted to establish a guardianship arrangement. The paperwork was rejected, but a duplicate administrative record was created before the error was corrected.""

"Why wasn't I told?""

Richard looked down.

"Because Claire asked me to handle it quietly. She feared that a public dispute would expose Maya to unwanted attention.""

Darius slammed his hand on the table.

"Everyone knew something except me!""

Richard didn't argue.

Then he opened Claire's letter.

It was dated four months before her death.

Richard,

I need you to understand why I am asking for another copy of Maya's records.

Stephen has started making demands again. Catherine has been contacting me, claiming that she deserves a place in Maya's life because she helped me during my pregnancy.

I have never agreed to that.

I made mistakes before I met Darius. I trusted people who didn't deserve my trust. But I will not allow my daughter to become a bargaining chip.

Darius lowered the paper.

Richard continued reading.

If anything happens to me, please make sure Darius knows that the second registration is fraudulent. Catherine was never Maya's mother, and she was never granted parental authority.

There is another reason I'm afraid.

Stephen has discovered something about the Colebridge accounts. He believes Maya's inheritance can be used to settle a debt he claims I owe him.

I have refused.

Please protect my little girl.

The letter ended with Claire's signature.

Darius sat silently.

I reached for his hand.

"Your wife was trying to protect Maya.""

He nodded slowly.

"But why didn't she trust me enough to tell me?""

Richard answered carefully.

"She may have believed you would confront Stephen. She was seriously ill, and she feared the consequences of a public conflict.""

Darius looked toward the window.

"I would have protected her.""

"I know.""

"She should have let me.""

Richard didn't respond.

For several minutes, we sat in silence.

Then Darius picked up his phone.

There were six missed calls from the police.

He called back immediately.

"Have you found my daughter?""

The officer answered.

"We've located Vanessa's vehicle.""

"Where?""

"At a roadside motel approximately thirty miles outside town.""

"Is Maya with her?""

A pause.

"Yes. We believe she's inside.""

Darius stood so quickly that his chair fell backward.

"Is she safe?""

"We haven't confirmed that yet. Officers are approaching the room.""

Darius was already heading for the door.

"Wait," the officer said.

"There's something you need to know.""

"What?""

"Vanessa isn't alone.""

Darius stopped.

"Who is with her?""

"Catherine.""

He looked at Richard.

The attorney grabbed his briefcase.

"We're coming.""

The motel was surrounded by police vehicles when we arrived.

An officer met us at the entrance.

"Mr. Cole, we're attempting to negotiate.""

"Why?""

"Vanessa refuses to open the door.""

Darius looked toward the second-floor corridor.

"Can I speak to my daughter?""

"We're trying to arrange that.""

A woman's voice suddenly echoed from inside the room.

"Darius! Tell them to leave!""

It was Vanessa.

Darius stepped forward.

"Vanessa, open the door.""

"Not until you listen!""

"Where's Maya?""

"She's here.""

"Let me talk to her.""

A long silence followed.

Then Maya's voice came through the door.

"Daddy?""

Darius closed his eyes.

"Baby, I'm here.""

"Are you angry with me?""

His face crumpled.

"No, sweetheart. Never.""

"I didn't sign anything.""

Darius pressed his forehead against the door.

"You don't have to sign anything. You don't have to do anything. I just want to bring you home.""

Catherine's voice interrupted.

"You're confusing her!""

Darius stepped back.

"Keep my daughter's name out of your mouth.""

Vanessa began crying.

"You're destroying everything!""

Darius looked at the door.

"You destroyed everything when you hurt a little girl who trusted you.""

Then he heard a sound.

A crash.

Maya screamed.

The officers immediately moved.

One shouted for everyone to step away from the entrance.

A second later, the door opened.

Vanessa stood there, pale and trembling.

Behind her, Catherine was holding Maya's arm.

The little girl was crying.

"Daddy!""

Darius rushed forward.

Catherine tried to pull Maya backward.

An officer stepped between them.

"Let go of the child!""

Catherine released her.

Maya ran into Darius's arms.

He dropped to his knees and held her tightly.

"You're okay. You're okay. Daddy's here.""

Maya buried her face in his neck.

"I want to go home.""

"We're going home.""

An officer escorted Catherine into the hallway.

Vanessa stood motionless.

Her makeup had run down her cheeks.

"Please, Darius.""

He didn't look at her.

"Not now.""

Catherine suddenly shouted.

"You don't understand! We did this for the family!""

Darius turned.

"What family?""

Catherine's eyes flashed.

"The family Claire destroyed!""

He stared at her.

"What did Claire ever do to you?""

Catherine laughed bitterly.

"She took everything!""

Richard stepped forward.

"What exactly did she take?""

Catherine looked at him.

Then she realized what she had said.

Her mouth closed.

Darius shifted Maya into my arms and approached Catherine.

"Tell me.""

She shook her head.

"You're better off not knowing.""

Richard opened his briefcase.

"Actually, Mrs. Miller, I think we should discuss the original Colebridge agreement.""

Catherine's expression changed.

"What agreement?""

"The one signed by your former husband, Stephen, and Claire.""

Catherine went pale.

Richard continued.

"It concerns the ownership of the company, the missing payments, and the original beneficiary of a life insurance policy.""

Darius frowned.

"Life insurance?""

Richard nodded.

"Claire purchased a policy shortly before Maya was born. The beneficiary was supposed to be her daughter.""

He removed a copy.

But before he could show it to Darius, Catherine spoke.

"That policy was never supposed to be paid to Maya.""

The hallway fell silent.

Darius stared at her.

"Why?""

Catherine looked toward Vanessa.

Then she whispered something none of us expected.

"Because the money was supposed to go to Stephen.""

Darius stepped forward.

"How much money?""

Richard checked the document.

"Two million dollars.""

Catherine began crying.

"And Claire changed the beneficiary three days before she died.""

Darius looked at Maya, who was still clinging to my cardigan.

Then he turned back toward Catherine.

"Why would Claire leave money to Stephen?""

Catherine shook her head.

"She didn't.""

She looked directly at Darius.

"She left it to the person she believed would eventually need it most.""

Richard turned the document around.

The beneficiary's name was clearly printed.

*Darius Cole.*

But beneath his name was another line.

*Contingent beneficiary: The biological child of Stephen Miller and Claire Bennett.*

Darius looked at the paper.

Then at Maya.

And suddenly, he understood why Stephen had spent years trying to get close to the family.

The money wasn't simply an inheritance.

It was the final piece of a secret Claire had spent her last months trying to protect.

Richard quietly gathered the documents.

"Mr. Cole, there's one more thing.""

Darius looked up.

"The insurance company has already received a claim.""

"From whom?""

Richard hesitated.

Then he answered.

"Vanessa.""

Darius stared at his wife.

She lowered her eyes.

And in that moment, I realized the cruelest part of this entire story.

May you like

Vanessa hadn't just helped Catherine hurt Maya.

She had been waiting for Claire's secret to become valuable enough to destroy the family all over again.
