Chapter 4: The Photograph in the Locked Drawer
Darius didn't wait for Vanessa to come home.
Within twenty minutes, he was standing outside the bedroom he shared with his wife, staring at the small antique dresser near the window.
The locked drawer was on the bottom.
I'd seen Vanessa keep jewelry in it, along with old photographs and personal documents. She was strangely protective of that drawer, even refusing to let the housekeeper dust it.
Darius tried the handle.
Locked.
"Do you have a key?"" I asked.
He shook his head.
"Vanessa keeps it on her keychain.""
Margaret stood behind us, holding her phone.
"Before you open it, I think you should consider that whoever sent that message might be trying to manipulate you.""
Darius looked at her.
"Someone already manipulated my wife into hurting my daughter. I'm done waiting.""
He went downstairs and returned with a small toolbox.
After several minutes, the lock gave way.
The drawer opened with a sharp click.
Inside were several envelopes, a velvet jewelry box, two USB drives, and a thick collection of photographs held together with a faded ribbon.
Darius picked up the first envelope.
It was addressed to Vanessa.
The handwriting was unmistakably Claire's.
My stomach tightened.
"That's impossible," I whispered.
Darius looked at the date.
It had been written three weeks before Claire died.
He opened it carefully.
The first page contained only a few sentences.
Vanessa,
I know you and Darius have become close friends, and I appreciate how much you've helped our family. There's something I've been meaning to discuss with you. If anything happens to me, please remember that Maya needs people who love her for herself, not people who want to replace me.
Darius stopped reading.
He turned the page.
There was nothing else.
"Why would Claire write this to Vanessa?"" he asked.
I shook my head.
"I don't know.""
He picked up another envelope.
This one contained a photograph.
Claire was sitting in a hospital chair, holding baby Maya. Beside her stood a younger Vanessa, smiling at the camera.
On the back, Claire had written:
The people we trust with our children matter more than the people who promise to love us.
Darius sat on the edge of the bed.
"Mom, did you know Claire and Vanessa were close?""
"They knew each other through the hospital charity program. Vanessa volunteered there before she married you.""
He looked at the photograph again.
"Claire trusted her.""
"She did.""
He returned to the drawer.
At the bottom, beneath the photographs, lay a small brown notebook.
The cover was marked with Claire's initials.
Darius opened it.
The first several pages contained ordinary notes about Maya's meals, school activities, and favorite bedtime stories.
Then he found an entry dated two weeks before Claire's death.
I overheard Vanessa speaking with someone on the phone today. She thought I was asleep. She mentioned Maya's trust fund and asked whether the money would become accessible if something happened to me.
Darius looked up.
"What trust fund?""
I felt my heart begin to pound.
"Claire's father established one when Maya was born.""
"How much?""
"Your grandfather-in-law left a substantial amount for Maya's education and future. Claire managed it until she passed away.""
Darius turned another page.
I don't want to believe Vanessa would ever hurt Maya. But I heard her say that a child doesn't need that much money, especially when she has a father who can provide everything.
The next entry was worse.
If I'm wrong about Vanessa, I hope nobody ever reads this. But if I'm right, please make sure Maya never loses what her grandfather left her.
Darius closed the notebook.
For several seconds, neither of us spoke.
Then Margaret picked up the two USB drives.
"Should we check these?""
Darius nodded.
We took them downstairs and connected the first drive to his laptop.
It contained several family photographs, old birthday videos, and scanned documents.
The second drive had only one folder.
Its name was:
*BEFORE THE WEDDING.*
Darius opened it.
There were three video files.
The first showed Claire sitting in her hospital bed, speaking directly into a camera.
Her face was thinner than I remembered, but her smile was still warm.
"If you're watching this, something must have happened to me.""
Darius covered his mouth.
Claire continued.
"There's something I need to tell you about Maya's future. I didn't want to burden you while I was sick, but I couldn't leave without making sure someone knew.""
The video ended abruptly.
Darius opened the second file.
This one showed Claire sitting in the same hospital room.
"Vanessa told me she wanted to help Darius after I'm gone. I believed her. I wanted to believe her.""
Claire looked down at something outside the camera's view.
"But yesterday, I heard her talking to someone about Maya's inheritance. She said that if Darius married her, she'd have access to the family accounts eventually.""
My grandson went completely still.
Claire's voice trembled.
"I don't know what to think anymore.""
The video ended.
The third file was different.
It had been recorded on the night before Claire died.
She was exhausted, barely able to keep her eyes open.
But she looked directly into the camera.
"Darius, if you ever watch this, please don't blame yourself for trusting people. Just promise me one thing.""
She paused.
"Never let anyone make Maya feel that she has to earn her place in your heart.""
Then she smiled faintly.
"She is already your whole world. Don't let anyone convince you otherwise.""
Darius closed the laptop.
He stood up and walked toward the window.
I had never seen him cry like that.
Not when Claire died.
Not even at her funeral.
"She knew," he whispered.
I walked toward him.
"She suspected something, sweetheart. But she didn't know everything.""
He wiped his face.
"Why didn't she tell me?""
"Perhaps she didn't want you living with fear while she was dying.""
He turned around.
"Vanessa knew about these recordings.""
I nodded slowly.
"Apparently.""
"She kept them locked away.""
Margaret pointed toward the dresser.
"Then someone else must have known they existed.""
Darius looked at the open drawer.
Among the remaining documents was a folded piece of paper.
He opened it.
It was a handwritten note.
If Vanessa ever tries to separate Maya from her father, contact the person who knows what happened the night Claire signed the trust documents.
There was a telephone number underneath.
And a name.
*Richard Hale — Family Attorney.*
Darius immediately picked up his phone.
But before he could dial, the front door opened.
Vanessa had returned.
And she wasn't alone.
A man's voice called from downstairs.
"Where is Darius? We need to settle this before things get out of control.""
Margaret looked toward the staircase.
Darius recognized the voice immediately.
May you like
It belonged to Catherine's lawyer.
And he was carrying a document folder with Maya's name written across the front.
