Chapter 1: The Ring
“I want a divorce.””
Marcus said it without looking at me.
For three seconds, nobody moved.
The room was bright with late-afternoon sunlight, the kind that made everything look clean and peaceful. Our cream sofa sat beneath the family photographs. A half-packed suitcase stood near the bookshelf. On the coffee table, beside a bottle of water I had forgotten to drink, lay the tiny hospital bracelet from my newborn daughter.
And standing beside my husband was Vanessa.
She held a suitcase in one hand.
On her left hand was my grandmother’s emerald ring.
My eyes locked onto it.
Vanessa lifted her chin.
“It suits me better.””
I stared at the stone.
Large. Deep green. Surrounded by tiny diamonds.
I had watched that ring disappear from my grandmother’s hand when I was seventeen. She had squeezed my fingers before giving it to me and whispered that some things were worth protecting, even when nobody else understood why.
I had never told Vanessa that story.
I had barely told Marcus.
“That was my grandmother’s,” I said.
My voice sounded strangely calm.
Vanessa smiled.
“Was it?””
Marcus finally glanced at me.
His face was pale.
“Please, Alicia.””
“Please what?””
He rubbed his palm against his dark shirt.
“I didn't want you to find out like this.””
I looked at Vanessa.
She didn't look guilty.
She looked prepared.
That was worse.
“You brought her here?”” I asked.
Marcus swallowed.
“She needed somewhere to stay.””
Vanessa gave a tiny laugh.
“I don't need permission to walk into a house that I'm about to help run.””
My stomach tightened.
“You're not running anything in my house.””
Marcus flinched.
Vanessa didn't.
She slowly turned the emerald toward the light, admiring how the stone flashed green across her fingers.
“My grandmother wore that,” I said.
Vanessa's expression changed for half a second.
Not guilt.
Recognition.
Then it vanished.
Marcus stepped between us.
“Alicia, you're exhausted. You just had a baby. Let's not make this uglier than it already is.””
I looked at him.
“You filed for divorce?””
He said nothing.
“You brought another woman into our living room?””
Still nothing.
“And she's wearing jewelry that belonged to my family?””
Marcus lowered his eyes.
“I didn't know about the ring.””
Vanessa looked at him.
“You didn't?””
He shook his head.
“No.””
She smiled faintly.
“Then I suppose there's a lot you don't know.””
The sentence landed harder than she probably intended.
I turned away.
For the first time since they entered, I noticed the bookshelf.
The third shelf.
Behind an old framed photograph of my grandmother stood a small wooden box.
Locked.
I hadn't touched it in years.
Marcus noticed where I was looking.
His posture changed immediately.
“Alicia,” he said, “what are you doing?””
I walked toward the bookshelf.
“Getting something.””
“What?””
I reached behind the photograph.
My fingers closed around the cold brass key taped to the back.
Marcus took one step forward.
“Alicia, don't.””
I turned.
His face had lost what little color remained.
Vanessa's confidence disappeared too.
“What is that?”” Marcus asked.
I held up the wooden box.
“My grandmother's.””
Marcus stared at it.
“Why have I never seen that?””
“Because she told me not to open it unless I needed to.””
Vanessa's eyes fixed on the box.
I walked to the coffee table and placed it down.
The lock clicked.
Once.
Twice.
Then opened.
Inside was a bundle of yellowed papers tied with faded blue ribbon.
At the very bottom was an envelope sealed with red wax.
My grandmother's handwriting was across the front.
*Alicia. Only when you are betrayed.*
The room went silent.
Marcus whispered my name.
I pulled the envelope free.
Vanessa took a step backward.
I broke the seal.
Inside was an old will.
I unfolded it slowly.
Marcus moved closer.
“What does it say?””
I didn't answer.
My eyes traveled down the first page.
Then the second.
Then the final page.
There, beneath my grandmother's signature, was a name I had never expected to see.
*VANESSA COLE.*
Vanessa's suitcase slipped from her fingers.
It hit the floor.
Marcus stared at the page.
“Why would your grandmother know Vanessa?””
I looked up.
Vanessa wasn't smiling anymore.
And when I turned the page slightly, another line of handwriting appeared beneath the signature.
*IF VANESSA EVER RETURNS, DO NOT TRUST HER.*
Vanessa lunged forward.
I pulled the will away.
“You knew my grandmother?””
Vanessa froze.
May you like
Her lips parted.
And for the first time, she looked genuinely terrified.
