Chapter 7: The Woman Behind the Door

“Evelyn.””

Vanessa said the name like it hurt to breathe.

The door opened.

An older Black woman stood on the threshold.

She was in her early sixties, elegant in a dark green coat, with silver threaded through her short hair. One hand rested on a polished cane. The other held a small leather handbag.

Her eyes moved across the room.

First to Daniel.

Then Marcus.

Then Vanessa.

Finally, they landed on me.

“Alicia,” she said.

I had never seen her before.

Yet something about the way she said my name made my skin prickle.

“You know me?””

Evelyn stepped inside.

“I knew your grandmother.””

Marcus moved between us.

“Who are you?””

Evelyn's eyes hardened.

“You're Harold's son.””

Marcus stiffened.

“You knew my father?””

“Yes.””

“What did you do with him?””

She looked at Daniel.

“Still keeping secrets, Daniel?””

Daniel stood.

“Not anymore.””

Evelyn gave a quiet laugh.

“You always say that after the damage is done.””

I stepped forward.

“Did you raise Vanessa's daughter?””

Evelyn looked at Vanessa.

For several seconds, neither woman spoke.

Then Evelyn nodded.

“Yes.””

Vanessa covered her mouth.

“My baby…”

“She wasn't your baby anymore,” Evelyn said.

Vanessa recoiled as if she'd been struck.

“She was always my baby.””

“I kept her alive.””

“You took her.””

“I took her because your grandmother asked me to.””

Vanessa stared at her.

“My grandmother?””

“No.””

Evelyn's gaze shifted to me.

“Your grandmother asked me to hide her.””

My pulse quickened.

“Why?””

Evelyn walked toward the coffee table.

Her cane tapped softly against the floor.

“Because there was someone looking for that child.””

“Who?””

She looked at Marcus.

“Your uncle.””

Marcus shook his head.

“My uncle was dead.””

“No,” Evelyn said.

“He was very much alive.””

Daniel opened his briefcase.

“He still is.””

Marcus's face tightened.

“Where?””

Evelyn didn't answer.

I looked at Daniel.

“You knew this?””

“Yes.””

“For twenty years?””

“Yes.””

I slammed my palm against the table.

“Everyone knew something except me!””

The room went silent.

Evelyn studied me.

“Your grandmother wanted it that way.””

“She had no right.””

“She believed she did.””

“She left me a warning instead of the truth.””

“She left you alive.””

I froze.

Evelyn reached into her handbag.

She pulled out a small photograph.

She placed it beside the others.

It showed a young Black woman sitting on a hospital bed.

Vanessa.

A newborn rested against her chest.

Standing beside the bed was my grandmother.

And behind them was Harold, Marcus's father.

But there was one more person in the room.

A younger Evelyn.

I stared at her.

“You were there.””

“Yes.””

“What happened?””

Evelyn's eyes glistened.

“Your grandmother discovered that Harold had a brother named Raymond.””

Marcus whispered, “Raymond.””

I looked at him.

“Your uncle?””

He nodded slowly.

“My father never talked about him.””

“He couldn't,” Evelyn said.

“Why?””

“Because Raymond had become obsessed with the baby.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“Why?””

“Because of who her mother was.””

Vanessa frowned.

“What does that mean?””

Evelyn looked at her.

“Your family had money.””

“So?””

“Your grandmother had more.””

I stared at her.

“What does money have to do with my daughter?””

“Everything.””

Daniel stepped closer.

“Your grandmother had recently changed her will.””

I looked at the old document.

“To include Vanessa.””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because she intended to give Vanessa control of a trust.””

Vanessa's face went blank.

“What trust?””

Evelyn answered.

“The Cole Family Trust.””

Vanessa laughed bitterly.

“There was no trust.””

“There was.””

“My family had nothing.””

“That's what you were told.””

I looked at the will.

My grandmother hadn't simply left Vanessa a name.

She had left her access.

To money.

To property.

To something powerful enough to make someone hunt down a newborn.

I turned to Daniel.

“Why was the emerald involved?””

“Because your grandmother knew the trust documents could not be transferred without it.””

Vanessa looked down at the ring.

“She gave me this.””

“No,” Evelyn said.

Vanessa looked up.

“Then who did?””

Evelyn's gaze settled on Marcus.

“Your husband.””

Marcus shook his head.

“I found it.””

“Where?””

“In my father's storage unit.””

The words came out barely above a whisper.

I stared at him.

“You said your mother had it.””

“I lied.””

“Why?””

“Because I was afraid.””

“Of what?””

He looked at Evelyn.

“Of Raymond.””

Evelyn's expression changed.

“You finally understand.””

A sharp knock sounded at the door.

Everyone turned.

Daniel moved toward it.

“Don't,” Evelyn said.

Daniel stopped.

A shadow passed across the frosted glass.

Then a man's voice came from outside.

“Marcus.””

Marcus went pale.

He knew the voice.

“Raymond.””

Evelyn grabbed my arm.

“Do not let him inside.””

Vanessa backed away.

Marcus stared at the door.

“Why would he come here?””

Daniel whispered, “Because he knows the box has been opened.””

I looked down.

The second wooden box sat open on the table.

The old papers were exposed.

And beneath them, almost hidden under the lining, I noticed something I hadn't seen before.

A tiny metal key.

Attached to it was a tag.

Four words.

*FOR THE FINAL LOCK.*

I picked it up.

Evelyn saw it.

Her face changed.

“Alicia…”

“What?””

“That key wasn't supposed to be there.””

“Then where was it supposed to be?””

She looked toward the door.

“On your grandmother's grave.””

Another knock came.

Harder this time.

The entire house seemed to tremble.

Then Raymond's voice came through the door.

“You have something that belongs to me.””

I looked at the key.

Then at Evelyn.

“What belongs to you?””

May you like

Evelyn's eyes filled with fear.

“The truth about who your niece really is.””
