Chapter 9: The Daughter in the Photograph

Marcus dropped the phone.

It hit the carpet.

The call remained connected.

A woman's voice came faintly through the speaker.

“Marcus?””

He stared at it.

I picked it up.

“Who are you?””

The woman hesitated.

“I don't know if I'm supposed to say.””

“You called my husband.””

“I know.””

“Then tell me who you are.””

Her breathing shook.

“My name is Maya.””

Vanessa stood.

“Maya?””

“Yes.””

Vanessa's eyes widened.

“That's my daughter's name.””

Silence.

Maya whispered, “My mother used to call me that.””

Vanessa's knees gave way.

Evelyn caught her.

I looked at Daniel.

He was staring at the recorder.

“You knew.””

He shook his head.

“I knew there was another transfer.””

“You knew the name?””

“No.””

Maya's voice came through the phone again.

“I found a letter.””

“What letter?””

“From a woman named Eleanor.””

My heart stopped.

“Eleanor was my grandmother.””

“Yes.””

“What did she say?””

Maya began crying.

“She said I had been lied to.””

Vanessa reached for the phone.

“Let me speak to her.””

I handed it over.

Vanessa pressed the phone against her ear.

“Maya?””

The woman on the other end went silent.

Vanessa closed her eyes.

“It's me.””

A trembling breath.

“Who?””

“Vanessa.””

Another silence.

Then Maya whispered:

“My mother?””

Vanessa covered her mouth.

“Yes.””

I watched her collapse into the sofa.

For twenty years, she'd imagined a dead child.

Now that child was speaking to her.

But the story still didn't make sense.

I picked up the final envelope.

My name was on it.

I opened it.

Inside was a single document.

A legal guardianship record.

The child listed wasn't Maya.

It was me.

My own name appeared as temporary guardian.

I stared at the date.

Twenty years earlier.

Impossible.

I looked at Daniel.

“Why am I listed here?””

He took the paper.

His eyes widened.

“Your grandmother never told me this.””

“What does it mean?””

Evelyn stepped closer.

“She used you as the legal shield.””

“For what?””

“For Maya.””

I shook my head.

“I was a teenager.””

“Exactly.””

My grandmother had made me the guardian on paper because nobody would suspect a teenager was protecting a child.

But there was something else.

At the bottom of the document was a second signature.

Marcus's father.

Harold.

I looked at Marcus.

“Your father signed this.””

He stared at the page.

“My father knew.””

“Yes.””

“And he helped your grandmother.””

“Yes.””

Marcus sat down.

I looked at Vanessa.

“Then why did everyone believe Maya died?””

Vanessa's eyes filled.

“Because your grandmother told me she died.””

Daniel spoke quietly.

“She needed Vanessa to believe it.””

“Why?””

“To keep Maya safe.””

I looked at the phone.

Maya was still there.

“Where are you?””

She hesitated.

“I don't know.””

“What do you mean?””

“I've been moving.””

“Who are you with?””

“My adoptive mother.””

“Is she Evelyn?””

“No.””

Evelyn closed her eyes.

I felt a chill.

“Who is she?””

Maya didn't answer.

Then she said, “I think she knows Raymond.””

Everyone froze.

Marcus stood.

“Get out of the house.””

“What?””

“Now.””

I looked at him.

“Why?””

“Because if Raymond knows where she is—”

A loud crash came from the front of the house.

Everyone turned.

The front window shattered.

Vanessa screamed.

Daniel pulled her down.

Marcus grabbed my arm.

“Get away from the windows.””

Another crash.

Then silence.

I crawled toward the fallen photograph.

The image of my grandmother and Vanessa lay face down on the floor.

I picked it up.

Something had been hidden behind it.

A second photograph.

I turned it over.

It showed a little Black girl, maybe six years old, standing beside an older woman.

The child had Vanessa's eyes.

But there was something else.

A necklace around the girl's neck.

An emerald pendant.

The same emerald stone as Vanessa's ring.

I stared.

“That's Maya.””

Vanessa crawled toward me.

“Let me see.””

I gave her the photograph.

She began sobbing.

“That's her.””

Marcus looked at the woman beside Maya.

His expression changed.

“Wait.””

“What?””

He pointed.

“I know her.””

I looked at the photograph.

The woman beside Maya was older.

Silver hair.

Dark green coat.

A familiar face.

Evelyn.

Evelyn stared at the photograph.

“I never raised her.””

I looked at her.

“Then why are you in this picture?””

Evelyn's lips parted.

“I don't know.””

“You just said you never raised her.””

“I didn't.””

“Then explain this.””

She took the photograph.

Her hands began trembling.

Daniel leaned over.

His face went pale.

“That isn't Evelyn.””

I stared at him.

“It looks exactly like her.””

“No.””

He pointed to the woman's left hand.

“Look.””

The woman wore a ring.

Not the emerald.

A plain gold band.

Evelyn looked at her own hand.

Then whispered:

“My sister.””

Marcus frowned.

“You have a sister?””

“I did.””

“What was her name?””

Evelyn looked at the photograph.

“Ruth.””

Daniel closed his eyes.

“Ruth was Raymond's wife.””

The room went silent.

Vanessa stared at the photograph.

“So Raymond raised my daughter.””

“No,” Daniel said.

He turned the photograph over.

There was handwriting on the back.

His voice dropped.

“Ruth raised her.””

I looked at him.

“Then where was Raymond?””

Daniel swallowed.

“Watching.””

Marcus shook his head.

“That doesn't make sense.””

“It does if Raymond wanted control without being seen.””

I looked at the photograph again.

Maya was smiling.

Happy.

Safe.

For the first time, I understood what my grandmother had been trying to protect.

Not the money.

Not the ring.

Not even the family name.

A child.

A child who had been moved from one set of hands to another because too many adults wanted something from her.

Then Maya spoke through the phone.

“Alicia?””

I held the phone closer.

“Yes?””

“I found another letter.””

“What does it say?””

Her breathing became shaky.

“It says the reason everyone was so afraid of Raymond…”

She stopped.

“Maya?””

“I don't think he was trying to find me.””

My heart pounded.

“Then what was he trying to find?””

She whispered:

“You.””

The line went dead.

I stared at the phone.

Marcus looked at me.

“Why would Raymond want you?””

Before I could answer, Daniel slowly lifted the old will.

He pointed to Vanessa's name.

“Because Alicia isn't just the guardian.””

I looked at him.

“What am I?””

Daniel turned the final page toward me.

A second name was written beneath Vanessa's.

Mine.

And beside it was a phrase my grandmother had underlined three times:

*PRIMARY HEIR.*

Then, from somewhere upstairs, came the sound of a baby crying.

My baby.

May you like

But we had left her upstairs alone.

And the crying suddenly stopped.
