Chapter 8: The Final Lock

Daniel locked the front door.

Then he checked it twice.

Raymond didn't knock again.

That silence was somehow worse.

Marcus stood beside the sofa, staring at the door.

“You said he was dangerous,” he whispered.

Evelyn nodded.

“He is.””

“What does he want?””

“The trust.””

Marcus looked at the will.

“And the child?””

Evelyn's eyes hardened.

“The child is the only person who can inherit it.””

Vanessa's face went white.

“She can inherit it?””

“Once she is identified.””

I looked at the emerald.

“Identified how?””

Evelyn pointed at the ring.

“Your grandmother designed a system. Three pieces. The will.

The emerald. The final lock.””

Daniel nodded.

“She believed no single person should be able to access the trust.””

I looked at the key in my hand.

“And this opens the final lock.””

“Yes.””

“Where is it?””

Evelyn hesitated.

Marcus answered.

“My grandmother's grave.””

I looked at him.

“How do you know?””

“My father told me.””

“You said your father never talked about this.””

“He didn't.””

Marcus looked down.

“Not until the night he died.””

The words silenced everyone.

I stepped closer.

“What did he tell you?””

Marcus swallowed.

“He told me that if Raymond ever came looking for Vanessa, I should never tell him where the child was.””

Vanessa whispered, “Where was she?””

Marcus looked at Evelyn.

She closed her eyes.

“In my home.””

Vanessa's knees nearly buckled.

“For twenty years?””

“Yes.””

“You watched her grow?””

“Yes.””

“Did she know about me?””

“No.””

Vanessa began crying.

“Does she know my name?””

Evelyn's voice softened.

“No.””

I watched Vanessa wipe her face.

“You raised her.””

“Yes.””

“Does she look like me?””

Evelyn smiled sadly.

“More than you can imagine.””

Vanessa sat down.

For the first time, she looked less like the confident woman who had entered my house with a suitcase.

She looked like a mother who had lost twenty years.

I looked at Daniel.

“Where is she now?””

He glanced at Evelyn.

“She doesn't know anything.””

“That wasn't my question.””

Evelyn answered.

“She is safe.””

“Where?””

“I can't tell you.””

“Why?””

“Because Raymond is listening.””

I looked toward the ceiling.

“You think he has someone here?””

“No.””

Evelyn pointed toward the living room.

“Your house has a security system.””

Marcus frowned.

“So?””

“Someone accessed it remotely an hour ago.””

He pulled out his phone.

“What?””

He opened the security app.

His face changed.

“What?””

I moved beside him.

The screen showed the front door camera.

The image was frozen.

A man stood outside.

Older.

Broad-shouldered.

Gray beard.

Raymond.

But beneath the image was a timestamp.

*LIVE ACCESS: 9:14 PM*

Marcus whispered, “He isn't just outside.””

Daniel nodded.

“He's inside the system.””

The lights flickered.

Vanessa stood.

“No.””

The television turned on by itself.

Static filled the screen.

Then a man's face appeared.

Raymond.

He wasn't outside anymore.

He was speaking through the television.

“Good evening.””

Marcus stepped backward.

“How did you—”

Raymond smiled.

“Hello, nephew.””

Marcus's hands curled into fists.

“You've been lying to everyone.””

Raymond shrugged.

“Everyone lies when the truth is expensive.””

I stepped forward.

“What do you want?””

His eyes moved toward me.

“You're Alicia.””

“Yes.””

“Your grandmother would be disappointed.””

“Why?””

“Because she left you everything.””

I glanced at the will.

“She left me a warning.””

“She left you a burden.””

“Then why are you here?””

Raymond's smile disappeared.

“Because Vanessa stole something from me.””

Vanessa stared at the screen.

“I stole nothing.””

“You took what belonged to your daughter.””

“I didn't take anything.””

“You kept her alive.””

Vanessa froze.

Raymond leaned closer to the camera.

“That was my job.””

Evelyn stepped forward.

“You never had a job.””

Raymond's expression darkened.

“You should have stayed quiet.””

“I did for twenty years.””

“And now?””

“Now she's old enough to know the truth.””

Raymond laughed.

“You think the truth belongs to you?””

“No.””

Evelyn looked at me.

“It belongs to Alicia.””

I looked at the key.

“What does the final lock contain?””

Raymond's face changed.

“Don't open it.””

That answer told me everything.

I turned to Daniel.

“Where is the lock?””

He looked at Evelyn.

She hesitated.

Then walked to the bookshelf.

She removed the framed photograph of my grandmother.

Behind it was a narrow metal panel.

She pressed the corner.

The panel opened.

Inside was a recessed compartment.

Empty.

Except for a brass plate.

On it were two words.

*FINAL LOCK.*

I inserted the key.

It turned.

A click echoed through the room.

Raymond shouted through the television.

“STOP!””

The panel opened.

Inside was a sealed envelope.

And beneath it, a small digital recorder.

I took the envelope.

My name was written across it.

*ALICIA.*

I looked at the recorder.

There was a single file.

No date.

No title.

I pressed play.

My grandmother's voice filled the room.

“Alicia, if you've reached this point, then Vanessa has returned, Raymond has found you, and there is only one thing left for me to tell you.””

I held my breath.

Her voice trembled.

“The girl Vanessa believes is her daughter…”

Vanessa stepped closer.

Marcus stared at the recorder.

My grandmother continued.

“…is not the child I hid twenty years ago.””

Vanessa gasped.

“No.””

The recording continued.

“The child was moved again.””

I looked at Evelyn.

She shook her head.

“I didn't know.””

My grandmother's voice became weaker.

“And the person who raised her was not Evelyn.””

The recorder clicked.

Static.

Then one final sentence.

“She has been living under Alicia's name.””

The recording stopped.

Nobody moved.

Marcus looked at me.

Vanessa whispered, “What does that mean?””

Then the television went black.

A second later, Marcus's phone rang.

He answered.

Nobody spoke on the other end.

Then a woman's voice whispered:

“Marcus?””

His face drained of color.

“Who is this?””

May you like

The woman began crying.

“I think I'm your sister.””
