Chapter 6: The Father's Name
The photograph slipped from my fingers.
Marcus caught it before it hit the floor.
He stared at the image.
“No.””
I looked at him.
“You recognize him.””
He shook his head.
“That can't be my father.””
“Look at him.””
“I am.””
“Then stop saying it can't be.””
Marcus stared at the photograph again.
His breathing became shallow.
“My father died when I was twelve.””
Daniel spoke quietly.
“He was alive when the child was born.””
Marcus looked at him.
“How do you know?””
“Because I was there.””
Vanessa stepped toward us.
“You knew?””
Daniel nodded.
“I knew.””
She slapped the photograph from Marcus's hand.
“You knew all these years?””
“I knew who the father was.””
“You knew my daughter was alive?””
Daniel's silence answered.
Vanessa's face crumpled.
“You all knew.””
I picked up the photograph.
“Not all of us.””
I looked at Marcus.
“Did your father ever talk about Vanessa?””
“No.””
“Did he ever mention my grandmother?””
Marcus swallowed.
“Sometimes.””
“What did he say?””
“He said she was dangerous.””
I stared at him.
“My grandmother?””
“He wouldn't explain.””
Daniel sighed.
“Because your grandmother made him promise.””
Marcus turned.
“Promise what?””
“That he would never contact Vanessa again.””
Vanessa laughed bitterly.
“Of course.””
I looked at the letter from the box.
“Maybe the letter explains why.””
I unfolded it.
The paper was thinner than the will.
My grandmother's handwriting filled both sides.
I read silently.
Then stopped.
Marcus noticed.
“What?””
I couldn't speak.
“What does it say?””
I handed him the letter.
His eyes moved across the page.
His face changed.
“What?””
He read the final paragraph again.
Then he looked at me.
“She knew.””
“Who?””
“My father.””
“About what?””
Marcus looked toward Vanessa.
“He knew the baby was alive.””
Vanessa stepped forward.
“You're lying.””
Marcus shook his head.
“He knew.””
“You said he didn't.””
“I didn't know.””
Vanessa's voice rose.
“Your father abandoned me!””
“He was threatened.””
“By whom?””
Marcus looked at Daniel.
Daniel answered.
“Your grandmother.””
Vanessa stared at him.
“Why?””
Daniel didn't respond.
I did.
“Because she thought your father was dangerous.””
Vanessa shook her head.
“He loved me.””
“Then why did he leave?””
“I don't know.””
The room fell quiet.
I looked down at the letter again.
There was another line.
*He was not the danger.*
I read it aloud.
“He was not the danger.””
Marcus stared at me.
“Then who was?””
I continued reading.
The next sentence had been crossed out.
Beneath it, my grandmother had written:
*The danger was already inside the family.*
Marcus frowned.
“What does that mean?””
I looked around the room.
My grandmother's photographs.
The bookshelf.
The will.
The two boxes.
The emerald.
Everything suddenly felt connected.
Vanessa grabbed the letter.
“Give me that.””
I pulled it away.
“No.””
“It's about my daughter.””
“And it's about my family.””
“She is my daughter!””
“And my grandmother protected her for twenty years.””
Vanessa's expression hardened.
“Protected her?””
“Yes.””
“She stole her.””
“She may have saved her.””
Vanessa froze.
I looked at Daniel.
“Where is she now?””
He didn't answer.
“Where is Vanessa's daughter?””
Daniel looked at the clock.
Then at the front door.
“We don't have much time.””
“For what?””
“To keep her safe.””
Marcus stepped forward.
“From who?””
Daniel finally looked at him.
“Your father wasn't the only man who knew about the child.””
Marcus went pale.
“Who else?””
Daniel reached into his briefcase.
He pulled out a second photograph.
This one showed my grandmother standing beside a Black man I didn't recognize.
The man held a baby carrier.
On his wrist was a distinctive silver watch.
Marcus stared at it.
“My uncle.””
I looked at him.
“You have an uncle?””
“He died before I was born.””
Daniel shook his head.
“No.””
Marcus turned.
“What?””
“He didn't die.””
Marcus's mouth fell open.
“He disappeared.””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Daniel looked at me.
“Because he took the baby.””
Vanessa gasped.
“You said my daughter was placed with another family.””
“She was.””
“Then why was he holding her?””
Daniel's eyes moved toward the wooden box.
“Because your grandmother changed the plan.””
I looked at the letter.
“Why?””
Daniel hesitated.
Then he said, “Because she discovered who the child really was.””
Marcus stepped backward.
“What are you saying?””
Daniel's voice became quiet.
“The child wasn't just Vanessa's daughter.””
I stared at him.
“What else was she?””
Daniel looked directly at Marcus.
“She was your father's daughter.””
Marcus shook his head.
“That makes her my half-sister.””
“Yes.””
Vanessa began crying again.
I felt dizzy.
But Daniel wasn't finished.
“There was one more secret.””
He pointed at the emerald ring.
“Your grandmother didn't leave that ring to you because it was valuable.””
I looked down at it.
“Then why?””
“Because the person wearing it could identify the woman who raised Vanessa's daughter.””
Vanessa stopped crying.
“What woman?””
Daniel looked toward the front door.
“The woman your grandmother feared most.””
A knock sounded.
Three slow knocks.
Everyone froze.
Daniel whispered, “She's here.””
Marcus stared at the door.
“Who?””
Daniel's eyes went to Vanessa.
Then to me.
“The woman who raised your niece.””
May you like
The doorknob began to turn.
And before the door opened, Vanessa whispered a name I had never heard before.
