Chapter 4: The Man at the Door
The door opened before any of us could move.
A Black man in his late sixties stepped into the living room.
He wore a charcoal suit, no tie, and carried a weathered leather briefcase. His eyes went straight to Vanessa.
He stopped.
“So,” he said quietly.
“She really came back.””
Vanessa’s face drained of color.
Marcus moved in front of me.
“Who are you?””
The man looked at him.
“My name is Daniel Brooks.””
He closed the door behind him.
“I was your grandmother’s attorney.””
My fingers tightened around the second wooden box.
“My grandmother never mentioned you.””
Daniel gave a humorless smile.
“She was very good at keeping secrets.””
Vanessa shook her head.
“You weren't supposed to come.””
Daniel looked at her.
“Neither were you.””
Her jaw tightened.
“I had no choice.””
“You always have a choice.””
Marcus turned toward me.
“Alicia, don't listen to them.””
Daniel raised one hand.
“Your husband is right about one thing.””
I looked at him.
“What?””
“This conversation should have happened without him.””
Marcus stiffened.
“Excuse me?””
Daniel pointed toward the sofa.
“Sit down, Marcus.””
“I don't take orders from strangers.””
“You will when you hear what your wife’s grandmother left behind.””
Marcus didn't sit.
Neither did I.
Daniel placed his briefcase on the coffee table.
The latches clicked open.
Inside were several folders, a sealed envelope, and a small cassette recorder.
My eyes went to the recorder.
“What is that?””
Daniel answered, “A message.””
“For me?””
“For you.””
Vanessa whispered, “Daniel, please.””
He didn't look at her.
“She knew this day might come.””
I stepped closer.
“What day?””
“The day Vanessa returned wearing that ring.””
Vanessa pulled the emerald from her finger.
She held it in her palm.
Daniel stared at it.
Then he looked at me.
“Your grandmother called it a key.””
My heart skipped.
“A key to what?””
“The truth.””
Marcus scoffed.
“This is ridiculous.””
Daniel turned to him.
“Three months ago, you came to my office.””
Marcus went completely still.
I looked at my husband.
“You went to his office?””
Marcus swallowed.
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“I found some papers.””
“What papers?””
Daniel answered.
“Documents belonging to your grandmother.””
Marcus shot him a warning look.
Daniel continued anyway.
“He asked me whether Vanessa Cole was mentioned in them.””
I looked at Vanessa.
She had lowered her eyes.
I felt something cold move through my chest.
“You knew,” I said to Marcus.
“I suspected.””
“Suspected what?””
“That Vanessa was connected to your grandmother.””
“And you didn't tell me.””
“I was trying to protect you.””
Daniel shook his head.
“No. You were trying to protect Vanessa.””
Marcus turned sharply.
“That isn't fair.””
Daniel opened one of the folders.
“Your grandmother didn't trust Vanessa.””
Vanessa whispered, “That's not true.””
Daniel slid a document across the table.
“Read it.””
She didn't move.
I picked it up.
It was a notarized statement dated twenty years earlier.
At the top was my grandmother's name.
Near the bottom was another name.
Vanessa Cole.
And beneath it was a sentence that made my stomach twist.
*I cannot allow Vanessa to have access to Alicia.*
I looked up.
“Access to me?””
Vanessa closed her eyes.
Marcus stepped closer.
“Alicia, there's something you need to understand.””
I turned on him.
“No. There's something all of you need to explain.””
Daniel nodded.
“That's why I'm here.””
He reached for the cassette recorder.
I stared at it.
“My grandmother recorded this?””
“Yes.””
“When?””
“The night before she died.””
My throat tightened.
“You had this for years?””
Daniel's expression hardened.
“She instructed me not to give it to you unless Vanessa returned.””
“And now she has.””
“Yes.””
Vanessa suddenly grabbed her suitcase.
“I’m leaving.””
Daniel stood.
“If you leave now, the agreement changes.””
She froze.
“What agreement?””
Daniel looked at her.
“The one you signed.””
Marcus frowned.
“What did she sign?””
Vanessa said nothing.
I walked toward her.
“What did you sign?””
Her eyes met mine.
“I was trying to get something back.””
“What?””
“My life.””
“That isn't an answer.””
She shook her head.
“You wouldn't understand.””
“Try me.””
Vanessa's voice cracked.
“Your grandmother ruined everything.””
The words hung in the room.
I stared at her.
“My grandmother?””
“Yes.””
“How?””
Vanessa looked toward the family photographs.
“She took something from me.””
“What?””
She didn't answer.
Daniel stepped forward.
“She believes your grandmother stole something.””
I looked at him.
“Did she?””
“No.””
Vanessa's face twisted.
“You weren't there.””
“I was.””
She glared at him.
“You were paid to lie.””
Daniel's expression hardened.
“I was paid to protect your grandmother’s estate. There is a difference.””
Marcus rubbed his forehead.
“Can someone please tell me what this is about?””
Daniel picked up the cassette recorder.
“It is about a child.””
My breath caught.
Vanessa stopped breathing.
Marcus looked at me.
“What child?””
Daniel pressed the play button.
The machine clicked.
Static filled the room.
Then an older woman's voice emerged.
My grandmother.
Weak.
Shaky.
But unmistakable.
“If you're hearing this, Vanessa has returned.””
Vanessa covered her mouth.
My knees nearly gave out.
Grandmother continued.
“Alicia, there is something I should have told you long ago.””
The recording crackled.
Then came a sentence that made every hair on my arms rise.
“The baby you were told died twenty years ago…”
The tape suddenly cut to silence.
Marcus stared at me.
Vanessa began crying.
Daniel closed his eyes.
I looked at him.
“What baby?””
He didn't answer.
I looked at Vanessa.
May you like
She whispered one word.
“Mine.””
