Chapter 11: They Tried to Declare Me an Unfit Mother

The emergency application arrived at 8:12 the following morning.

Arthur brought the papers himself.

He entered my study, placed the folder on the desk, and remained standing.

"I wish I had better news.""

I opened it.

The first page contained Patricia's sworn statement.

She claimed I had become increasingly unstable during my pregnancy.

She described the Christmas incident as a disagreement that I had exaggerated.

She claimed I had threatened Daniel, destroyed family relationships, and used my financial position to intimidate vulnerable relatives.

Then came the worst part.

She alleged that I was emotionally incapable of caring for a newborn.

I looked up.

"She's trying to take custody of a baby who hasn't even been born.""

Arthur nodded.

"She's asking the court to appoint an independent guardian and require supervised contact between you and Daniel's family.""

I stared at the page.

"Can she do that?""

"She can file an application. That doesn't mean it has merit.""

Marcus entered carrying his laptop.

"We've also discovered something about the medical records.""

I looked at him.

"What?""

"Someone submitted a request for your complete prenatal history. The hospital refused to release the records without proper authorization.""

Arthur opened the folder.

"Good. We need the hospital to confirm that refusal in writing.""

I leaned back.

"Why are they so interested in my medical history?""

Marcus looked uncomfortable.

"Because Evelyn has included a preliminary psychological assessment in the application.""

I frowned.

"What assessment?""

He displayed a scanned document.

It claimed I had displayed signs of severe emotional instability following the Christmas incident.

I read the doctor's name.

Then I shook my head.

"I've never met this person.""

Arthur examined the report.

"Neither have I.""

Marcus enlarged the signature.

"That's because this isn't a genuine medical assessment. It's a document prepared by a private consultant.""

I stared at him.

"Can they submit something like that?""

"They can submit almost anything. The court determines whether it's admissible and credible.""

I looked at the bottom of the page.

There was a payment reference.

The consultant had received $35,000 from Whitmore Medical Holdings.

Patricia's company.

I put the document down.

"She paid someone to make me look unstable.""

Arthur nodded.

"It appears so.""

I stood carefully.

"Then let's make sure everyone knows what she actually did.""

At 11:00 a.m., I met with my obstetrician.

Dr. Reynolds reviewed the hospital notes from the Christmas incident and examined me.

She smiled when she heard the baby's heartbeat.

"She's doing well.""

I closed my eyes.

"Thank God.""

After the examination, I asked whether she could provide a medical statement confirming the circumstances of my visit.

She looked concerned.

"Has someone questioned your ability to care for your child?""

I nodded.

"Someone has submitted a report suggesting I'm emotionally unstable.""

Dr. Reynolds frowned.

"Based on what?""

"A fall during a family Christmas party.""

She put down her pen.

"Mrs. Whitmore, you came here because you were concerned about your baby's safety. You followed every medical instruction. You have attended your appointments regularly.""

She looked directly at me.

"I cannot make legal conclusions about your family situation, but I can provide an accurate statement of your medical care.""

Tears filled my eyes.

"Thank you.""

She gently touched my arm.

"Your job right now is to look after yourself and your baby. Let the lawyers deal with the rest.""

For the first time in days, I felt someone was genuinely on my side.

That afternoon, Vanessa sent Marcus a new set of documents.

They included emails between Patricia and the consultant who had prepared the psychological report.

The first message was short.

*Patricia: We need something that establishes Nia as emotionally unstable before the birth.*

The consultant replied:

*I can prepare a preliminary assessment based on the information provided. However, a proper clinical evaluation would require direct contact.*

Patricia answered:

*There won't be any direct contact. Just make it convincing.*

Marcus read the messages aloud.

Arthur immediately called the appropriate legal contact to preserve the evidence.

I sat quietly.

Then another email appeared.

It was sent from Evelyn's account.

*Once the application is approved, Daniel can request primary residence. Patricia will provide temporary childcare. The financial issues will become secondary.*

I looked at Arthur.

"They planned all of this.""

"Yes.""

"And Evelyn knew.""

Arthur nodded.

"She appears to have coordinated the legal strategy.""

I looked down at the screen.

"Then I want her removed from any position involving my family's documents.""

"We'll pursue the appropriate action.""

At 4:30 p.m., Daniel called.

This time, I answered because Arthur was sitting beside me.

"Nia," he said, sounding unusually gentle.

"What?""

"I heard about the application.""

I almost laughed.

"Did you?""

"Mom went too far.""

"She filed it with your attorney.""

"That doesn't mean I approved every detail.""

Arthur wrote something on a notepad and pushed it toward me.

Ask whether he knew about the psychological report.

I followed his instruction.

"Did you know Patricia paid someone to prepare a false psychological assessment?""

Daniel went silent.

Then he said:

"I didn't know it was false.""

I stared at the phone.

"So you knew about it.""

"Nia, I was trying to protect our daughter.""

"From what?""

"From all this fighting.""

I shook my head.

"Daniel, you have been the cause of almost every problem.""

He exhaled.

"Look, I want to make a deal.""

Arthur raised his eyebrows.

"What kind of deal?"" I asked.

"We withdraw the custody application. You release the company accounts. We agree on a financial settlement, and everyone moves on.""

I looked at Arthur.

He shook his head.

I continued.

"How much?""

Daniel hesitated.

"Twenty million.""

I almost dropped the phone.

"Twenty million dollars?""

"That would settle everything.""

"Everything?""

"The divorce. The company dispute. The property issues.""

I laughed.

"Daniel, you want me to pay you twenty million dollars to stop trying to take my child?""

His voice hardened.

"Don't phrase it like that.""

"How should I phrase it?""

"You're making this emotional.""

I looked at Arthur.

He was no longer writing.

He was staring at the phone.

Daniel continued.

"Think about our daughter. She needs both parents. She doesn't need a mother who spends her time fighting.""

I felt something inside me settle.

"You're right about one thing.""

"What?""

"Our daughter deserves both parents to act like adults.""

Then I added:

"But she doesn't deserve a father who treats her inheritance like a bank account.""

I ended the call.

Arthur nodded.

"Good.""

Marcus's laptop chimed.

He looked at the new email.

Then he stood.

"Mrs. Whitmore, I think we've found the person who created the forged medical report.""

"Who?""

He turned the screen toward us.

The sender information showed an account belonging to Patricia's personal assistant.

But the attached invoice was paid by a different company.

A company registered in Daniel's name.

Arthur leaned closer.

"There's another issue.""

He opened the company registration.

The company had been established six months earlier.

Its sole director was Daniel.

Its sole shareholder was not Daniel.

It was a woman named Lauren.

I frowned.

"Why would Lauren own a company connected to this?""

Marcus scrolled through the account history.

Then he stopped.

"Because this company received payments from the development projects Daniel transferred.""

Arthur looked at me.

"That means Lauren may have been used as a nominee shareholder.""

I stared at the screen.

"Does she know?""

Marcus shook his head.

"We don't know yet.""

Then a new message appeared.

It was from Vanessa.

*Nia, I need to warn you. Daniel has contacted the hospital again. He is asking about the baby's delivery arrangements.*

I immediately called her.

"Vanessa, what exactly did he ask?""

Her voice was shaking.

"He asked whether he could change the person authorized to make decisions during your delivery.""

I felt the blood drain from my face.

"Who did he want to appoint?""

Vanessa whispered:

"Patricia.""

I looked at Arthur.

He immediately stood.

"Contact the hospital. Confirm that no changes have been made.""

Marcus was already dialing.

Then Vanessa added something else.

"There's another reason Daniel is asking about the delivery.""

"What?""

She took a breath.

"He told Patricia that if you became unavailable during childbirth, they could temporarily control the trust until the court decided who should manage your daughter's inheritance.""

I gripped the edge of the desk.

They were no longer simply planning for a divorce.

They were preparing for a situation in which I might not be able to defend myself.

I looked at Arthur.

"How much time do we have?""

May you like

He answered quietly.

"Not enough to wait.""
