Chapter 5: The Letter From a Dead Man
I waited until Daniel left the hospital room before opening the envelope.
He hadn't gone willingly.
He had argued with Arthur, demanded access to the original contract, and threatened to call his personal attorney.
But when Marcus informed him that the board had already received copies of the suspicious transfers, Daniel finally walked out.
He didn't look back.
Arthur remained beside my bed.
"Would you prefer some privacy?"" he asked.
I shook my head.
"No. I want you to hear this too.""
My fingers carefully opened the envelope.
Inside was a handwritten letter and a smaller sealed packet.
I recognized my father-in-law's handwriting immediately.
Richard Whitmore had been a complicated man.
He was demanding, proud, and sometimes difficult to understand. But unlike Patricia, he had never treated me as though I were an embarrassment.
When Daniel and I married, Richard had quietly told me something I never forgot.
"Don't let anyone convince you that being kind means being weak.""
I unfolded the letter.
*Dear Nia,*
*If you are reading this, something has happened that I feared might happen long before my health began to fail.*
*Daniel has always wanted to prove himself. I understand that. I wanted the same thing when I was young. But there is a difference between ambition and entitlement.*
*Your husband has spent years believing that everything around him belongs to him simply because he has been allowed to manage it.*
*I am sorry I did not correct that belief sooner.*
I paused.
My eyes were already burning.
Arthur looked away, giving me a moment.
I continued.
*When Daniel first brought you home, Patricia was unhappy. She believed you were not wealthy enough, not connected enough, and not sophisticated enough for our family.*
*I disagreed.*
*You were the first person who asked me how I was feeling without looking at the watch on my wrist. You were the first person who noticed I was struggling to walk and quietly moved a chair closer.*
*I knew then that you had something this family desperately needed.*
I swallowed.
Richard had written several more paragraphs about the original company agreement, the trust, and the circumstances surrounding Daniel's appointment as CEO.
Then I reached the final section.
*I have reason to believe Daniel and Patricia are planning to restructure the company. They may attempt to move liabilities into the Carter trust or use your property as security. If they do, do not negotiate with them privately.*
*Trust Arthur. Trust Marcus. And above all, trust yourself.*
*There is one more thing you deserve to know.*
My fingers tightened around the paper.
*The first person who warned me about Daniel's financial behavior was Vanessa Cole.*
I looked up.
Arthur nodded slowly.
I returned to the letter.
*Vanessa discovered that several invoices had been duplicated and that money was being moved through companies connected to Patricia. When she confronted Daniel, he asked her to remain silent.*
*I wanted to remove him immediately, but I was ill. Patricia threatened to create a public scandal and accuse Vanessa of stealing company funds.*
*I believed we needed more evidence.*
*I am sorry, Nia. I should have done more.*
The letter ended with a sentence that made me put it down.
*If Daniel has betrayed you, remember that you are not responsible for saving him from the consequences of his choices.*
For several seconds, I couldn't speak.
Then I opened the smaller packet.
Inside was a USB drive and a typed inventory of financial records.
Arthur leaned forward.
"Your father-in-law instructed me to preserve these materials. He believed they might eventually be necessary.""
Marcus took the inventory.
"These are original transaction references.""
Arthur nodded.
"Bank transfers, internal correspondence, and recordings of two meetings.""
I looked at him.
"Recordings?""
"Yes. Richard was careful.""
Marcus examined the list.
"There's a reference to an account ending in 4821.""
Arthur's expression changed.
"That account belonged to Patricia.""
I frowned.
"How much money went through it?""
Marcus checked the inventory.
"At least seven million dollars over four years.""
I stared at him.
Seven million.
And the four-point-eight-million-dollar transfer was only one part of it.
"Where did the money come from?""
Arthur answered quietly.
"Several development projects. Some were legitimate operating transfers. Others were payments that appear to have been disguised as consulting fees.""
I looked at the USB drive.
"Can we access it?""
"Not until our forensic team creates a secure copy. I don't want the original altered.""
Marcus nodded.
"I'll arrange it.""
Before he could leave, my phone rang.
An unknown number.
I answered.
"Hello?""
A woman's voice came through.
"Mrs. Whitmore?""
"Yes.""
"It's Vanessa Cole.""
I sat up.
Arthur and Marcus exchanged a look.
"How did you get my number?""
"I still have your emergency contact details from the company records.""
"What do you want?""
Her voice trembled.
"I need to speak to you.""
"About what?""
"Daniel.""
I closed my eyes.
"Is this about the money?""
A pause.
"Partly.""
"What else?""
Vanessa took a shaky breath.
"Your husband told me he was going to divorce you after the baby was born.""
The room became very quiet.
I stared at the phone.
"What?""
"He said he needed to wait until you signed the restructuring agreement. He wanted the company secured first.""
I felt sick.
"Why are you telling me this?""
"Because I have copies of the original documents. And because Daniel has started threatening me.""
Arthur stepped closer and gestured for me to put the call on speaker.
I did.
"Vanessa," Arthur said, "this is Arthur Collins.""
She immediately went silent.
"Mr. Collins?""
"Yes. We have Richard's original records.""
I heard her begin to cry.
"Thank God.""
Marcus leaned forward.
"Do you have evidence of the unauthorized transfers?""
"Yes.""
"How much?""
"I have records showing at least twelve million dollars moved through Patricia's accounts.""
Arthur looked at Marcus.
Vanessa continued.
"But that's not why I'm calling.""
I gripped the phone.
"Then why?""
"Because Daniel is preparing something else.""
"What?""
"He wants to claim that you were involved in the missing money.""
I stared at the wall.
Vanessa's voice became urgent.
"He has been telling people that you controlled the holding company accounts and approved the transactions. He's planning to say you became unstable during your pregnancy and made unauthorized financial decisions.""
I felt my stomach tighten.
"He's going to blame me?""
"Yes.""
Arthur closed his eyes.
Marcus immediately began typing.
I took a slow breath.
"Vanessa, where are you?""
"I'm at home.""
"Are you safe?""
"I don't know.""
Then she whispered something that made my blood run cold.
"Daniel knows I kept copies of everything. And last night, someone broke into my apartment.""
The call suddenly disconnected.
I stared at the screen.
"Call her back," I said.
Marcus dialed immediately.
No answer.
He tried again.
Still nothing.
Arthur picked up the USB drive.
"We need to act now.""
I looked at him.
"Find her.""
Marcus was already calling his security team.
Then my phone vibrated.
A text message appeared from an unknown number.
*Mrs. Whitmore, I think you should know that your husband has already filed the divorce petition.*
A second message arrived.
It contained a photograph.
Daniel was standing outside a courthouse.
Beside him was Patricia.
And in Patricia's hand was a thick folder.
The caption beneath the photograph read:
*Emergency petition for exclusive control of marital assets.*
I looked at Marcus.
"Can he do that?""
"Anyone can file a petition," he replied.
"Winning it is another matter.""
Arthur shook his head.
"There's something else. If Patricia is involved, I suspect this isn't simply about divorce.""
He pointed to the folder in the photograph.
"That's a copy of the original trust agreement.""
My mouth went dry.
"They have another copy?""
Arthur nodded.
"And if I recognize the document correctly, it's the version Richard specifically instructed me never to release.""
I looked at the photograph again.
Daniel wasn't simply preparing to leave me.
He was preparing to take something with him.
May you like
Something my father-in-law had spent years protecting.
And I had no idea what it was.
