Chapter 9: The Woman Who Tried to Steal My Daughter's Future
I read Patricia's name three times.
Each time, it became harder to believe.
She had tried to appoint herself trustee of a fortune belonging to a baby who hadn't even been born.
"How did she get access to the trust documents?"" I asked.
Arthur immediately examined the submission.
"She couldn't have obtained the original documents through legitimate channels.""
"Then how?""
Marcus enlarged the digital record.
"The request was submitted using a temporary authorization code.""
"Whose code?""
He checked the audit trail.
Then he looked at me.
"Daniel's.""
I closed my eyes.
Of course.
The same man who had forged my signature had now helped his mother reach our daughter's inheritance.
"Can they change the trustee?""
"No," Arthur replied.
"Not without satisfying the trust's legal requirements. The request should be rejected.""
"Should be?""
He looked at me.
"We need to notify the trust administrator immediately.""
Marcus picked up his phone.
"I'll handle it.""
I walked toward the window.
My daughter moved gently beneath my hand.
"Sweetheart," I whispered, "I promise nobody is going to take what belongs to you.""
My phone rang.
Daniel.
I answered.
"What do you want?""
His voice was unusually controlled.
"We need to meet.""
"We have nothing to discuss.""
"Please, Nia.""
I almost didn't recognize his tone.
There was no anger.
No arrogance.
Just desperation.
"Five minutes," he said.
"Somewhere private.""
I looked at Arthur.
He shook his head.
"Have your attorney contact mine.""
Daniel exhaled.
"You're really going to make this ugly?""
I stared at the phone.
"Daniel, you submitted a request to transfer our unborn daughter's trust to your mother.""
Silence.
Then he said:
"Mom was trying to protect the family.""
I laughed softly.
"From whom?""
"From you.""
The words hung between us.
I lowered my voice.
"Goodbye, Daniel.""
I ended the call.
That afternoon, I agreed to meet Vanessa.
Arthur insisted that the meeting take place in a secure conference room at his law firm.
Vanessa arrived wearing a dark coat and carrying a small laptop bag.
She looked exhausted.
Her eyes were swollen, and she kept glancing toward the hallway.
"Thank you for seeing me," she said.
I offered her a seat.
"Are you safe now?""
"I think so.""
Arthur closed the conference room door.
Marcus placed a recorder on the table.
"Everything you share will be documented. Are you comfortable with that?""
Vanessa nodded.
She opened her laptop.
"I brought the original emails, the transfer records, and copies of the internal reports.""
She turned the screen toward us.
The first email was from Daniel.
*Subject: Revised Project Allocation*
It instructed Vanessa to move several property interests into a new company.
The second email was from Patricia.
*Make sure the Carter name is removed from the internal summaries. Daniel will handle the paperwork.*
The third was more disturbing.
It was sent to Evelyn Shaw.
*The prenatal situation may give us leverage if Nia refuses to cooperate. We need to complete the restructuring before the baby arrives.*
I felt sick.
Vanessa watched my face.
"I'm sorry.""
"Don't be. Keep going.""
She opened another folder.
"This is the financial schedule.""
There were dozens of transfers.
Some were labeled consulting fees.
Others were listed as administrative expenses.
But the receiving accounts belonged to companies connected to Patricia, Brielle, and Daniel.
Marcus examined the figures.
"These transfers total nearly fourteen million dollars.""
Vanessa nodded.
"There are more. I couldn't access all the records after Daniel removed my permissions.""
Arthur leaned forward.
"Why did you stay at the company after discovering the first transfers?""
Vanessa looked down.
"Because Daniel threatened me.""
"How?""
"He said he would accuse me of stealing company funds. He told me Patricia had friends in the banking industry who could make sure I never worked again.""
She swallowed.
"Then he started telling me that he was going to divorce Nia.""
I looked at her.
"What did he say about me?""
Vanessa hesitated.
"He said you were useful when you were quiet.""
My stomach tightened.
"He also said you would never leave because you had spent too much time trying to make his family accept you.""
I looked down at my hands.
That sounded exactly like Daniel.
Vanessa continued.
"He said once the company was transferred, he would take care of everything. He promised me a house, a position in the new company, and a life without Patricia controlling us.""
I looked up.
"Did you believe him?""
"For a while.""
She wiped her eyes.
"Then I found the messages about your daughter.""
She opened a final folder.
Inside was a photograph of a printed document.
It was a draft custody proposal.
My name appeared at the top.
Daniel's beneath it.
And in the section marked proposed parenting arrangements, he had written:
*Primary residence with father and paternal grandmother. Mother to receive supervised visitation until psychological stability is established.*
I couldn't breathe.
Arthur immediately closed the document.
"That's enough for now.""
But I had already seen it.
They weren't simply trying to take my money.
They were preparing to take my child.
"Who wrote this?"" I whispered.
Vanessa answered.
"Evelyn.""
Marcus leaned back.
"Do you have the original file?""
"Yes.""
Arthur looked at me.
"We need to bring this to the attention of the appropriate legal authorities.""
I nodded.
"Do it.""
At 5:20 p.m., Daniel's attorney contacted Arthur.
She requested an emergency settlement meeting.
Arthur initially declined.
But I wanted to hear what Daniel had to say.
We arranged a meeting at the law firm's conference room.
Daniel arrived with Evelyn.
Patricia came five minutes later.
She wore a cream-colored suit and carried a leather folder.
She looked at me as though nothing had happened.
"Nia," she said.
I didn't respond.
Daniel sat across from me.
Evelyn opened her briefcase.
"We believe this situation has escalated unnecessarily.""
Arthur folded his hands.
"Your client submitted forged financial documents and attempted to redirect a protected family trust.""
Evelyn smiled tightly.
"Those matters are under review.""
"Then perhaps you can explain this.""
Arthur placed the recording transcript on the table.
Evelyn's expression changed.
Patricia immediately reached for it.
"What is that?""
Arthur pulled it away.
"Evidence from the original prenuptial agreement signing.""
Daniel stared at Evelyn.
"You said there wasn't a recording.""
She didn't answer.
I looked at him.
"You knew about the amendment.""
He shook his head.
"Nia, I didn't know everything Patricia was doing.""
Patricia turned sharply.
"Daniel!""
He ignored her.
"I knew there were some financial arrangements. I didn't know about every document.""
I looked at him.
"Did you know Evelyn was preparing a custody proposal?""
His face changed.
Evelyn immediately intervened.
"That document was preliminary.""
"Did you know?""
Daniel looked down.
Then he said something that made my blood run cold.
"I thought it was better to have a plan.""
I stared at him.
"A plan to take my daughter?""
"No. A plan to protect her.""
"From me?""
He rubbed his forehead.
"You've become unpredictable.""
I slowly stood.
"Get out.""
Evelyn rose.
"Nia, please sit down.""
"Get out of my house, get out of my business, and stop using my daughter as an excuse for your greed.""
Patricia stood abruptly.
"Don't you dare speak to Daniel that way!""
Arthur immediately raised his voice.
"Mrs. Whitmore, the meeting is over.""
Patricia pointed at me.
"You think you've won because you've got money? You're nothing without the Carter name.""
I looked directly at her.
"Then why have you spent three years trying to steal it?""
Her mouth opened.
Daniel grabbed her arm.
"Mom. Stop.""
She pulled away.
"Don't tell me to stop! She's destroying everything!""
I watched them argue.
For the first time, Daniel and Patricia weren't united.
They were frightened.
And frightened people often made mistakes.
Evelyn gathered her papers.
"We'll be in touch.""
Arthur stood.
"I expect you will. Particularly regarding the recording and the fraudulent amendment.""
The three of them left.
Vanessa, who had been waiting in Arthur's adjoining office, quietly entered.
She looked at me.
"There's something else.""
I sat back down.
"What now?""
She placed a small envelope on the table.
"I found this in Daniel's desk after he removed me from the company.""
I opened it.
Inside was a photograph.
Daniel was standing beside a woman outside a private medical clinic.
The woman was holding a newborn baby.
I looked closer.
The photograph was dated four months earlier.
My hands began to shake.
"Who is that woman?""
Vanessa swallowed.
"Her name is Lauren.""
"And the baby?""
She hesitated.
"Daniel told me the child was his.""
I stared at the photograph.
The newborn was wrapped in a pale blue blanket.
A handwritten note was attached to the back.
*For Daniel. Thank you for everything.*
I looked at Vanessa.
"Does Patricia know?""
Vanessa nodded slowly.
"She's known since the baby was born.""
The room went silent.
I couldn't understand it.
Daniel had spent months talking about how excited he was to become a father.
He had kissed my stomach.
He had painted our daughter's nursery.
And all that time, he had another child.
I looked at the photograph again.
Then I noticed something written in the lower corner.
A date.
The baby had been born before Daniel and I announced our pregnancy.
I slowly raised my eyes.
"Vanessa, does Lauren know he's married?""
Vanessa looked down.
"Yes.""
"Then why did she agree to keep this secret?""
Vanessa's answer was barely audible.
"Because Patricia promised her something.""
"What?""
"That once Daniel divorced you, Lauren and her baby would move into your waterfront house.""
I felt my heart pound.
My house.
My daughter's home.
The place Patricia had just tried to claim.
Arthur picked up the photograph.
Then he turned it over again.
His expression changed.
"Nia.""
"What?""
He pointed to a small detail I hadn't noticed.
The photograph had been printed from a private company security camera.
And beneath the date was the location.
*Whitmore Development — Executive Medical Suite.*
Arthur looked at Marcus.
"That clinic is owned by one of Patricia's companies.""
Marcus immediately opened his laptop.
He typed for several seconds.
Then he stopped.
His face went pale.
"Arthur, there's a problem.""
"What?""
Marcus turned the screen toward us.
The company that owned the clinic had received a payment from the Carter family trust.
A payment of $850,000.
Approved under my name.
I stared at the screen.
I had never authorized it.
And the transaction date was three weeks before my wedding.
Arthur slowly closed the laptop.
"Now we know why Patricia wanted that amendment inserted into your prenup.""
I looked at the photograph of Daniel holding another woman's baby.
Then at the unauthorized transfer.
And finally, at the man who had promised to protect my daughter.
My husband hadn't just been hiding another child.
He had been using my family's money to support a secret life long before I ever discovered it.
May you like
But the most terrifying question remained.
If Patricia had been financing that secret life with my money, what else had she purchased using my name?
