Chapter 3: The Woman They Planned to Blame
At 6:40 the next morning, I was still in the hospital when Marcus arrived.
He carried a leather briefcase and a thick folder of documents.
He didn't sit down immediately.
Instead, he looked at me, then at the heart monitor.
"How is the baby?""
"She's doing well. The doctor wants me to stay a little longer.""
He nodded.
"Good.""
Then he placed the folder on the small table.
"I think you should see everything before we discuss your next move.""
I opened the first document.
It was a revised ownership agreement for Whitmore Development.
My name appeared at the top.
*Nia Carter Whitmore.*
I frowned.
"I've never signed this.""
"We know.""
Marcus turned the page.
There was a signature at the bottom.
It looked almost exactly like mine.
Almost.
I leaned closer.
The final letter in my surname was too long. The signature slanted in the wrong direction.
Someone had copied my handwriting.
"Who submitted this?""
"Your husband's legal department.""
I felt a chill move through my body.
"What were they trying to do?""
Marcus opened another document.
"The revised agreement would have transferred several outstanding liabilities from Whitmore Development to your private holding company.""
"How much?""
He looked at me.
"Approximately eleven point two million dollars.""
For a moment, I couldn't speak.
Eleven million dollars.
I had spent years believing Daniel's company was doing well.
I had attended his corporate dinners, smiled at his business partners, and listened to him describe new contracts.
He had told me he was expanding.
He had told me he was investing.
He had told me he was building a future for our daughter.
Meanwhile, he had been preparing to place millions in debt under my name.
"Does he know we've discovered this?""
"Yes. His attorney contacted our office at 2:13 this morning.""
"What did they want?""
"To withdraw the revised agreement before the review process was completed.""
I stared at the signature.
"Can they do that?""
"Not without consequences. The document was already submitted for processing.""
Marcus opened his briefcase and removed a second folder.
"There's more.""
I let out a tired breath.
"Of course there is.""
He placed three printed photographs in front of me.
The first showed Daniel leaving a private restaurant with a woman in a black coat.
The second showed them entering a luxury apartment building.
The third showed the same woman standing beside Brielle outside a real estate office.
I recognized her.
Vanessa Cole.
Daniel's executive assistant.
She had been at our wedding.
She had attended our anniversary dinner.
She had even sent me a gift when we announced the pregnancy.
I slowly pushed the photographs away.
"Is there something between them?""
Marcus didn't answer immediately.
"I don't want to speculate. However, the apartment is registered under a company funded by the same offshore entity that received the four-point-eight-million-dollar transfer.""
I closed my eyes.
It wasn't just the money.
It was the lies.
Every time Daniel had told me he was working late, every time he had canceled dinner, every time he had said he needed to travel unexpectedly.
I had believed him.
Because I loved him.
"How long?""
"We don't know yet.""
I looked at the photographs again.
"Find out.""
Marcus nodded.
Then he opened a final document.
"This is the part I believe you need to understand most.""
It was a company registration certificate.
The name at the top was unfamiliar.
*Whitmore Legacy Holdings.*
Below it were three listed officers.
Daniel Whitmore.
Patricia Whitmore.
Brielle Whitmore.
And beneath those names was a reference to a private loan secured against the building I owned.
My building.
The one Patricia had bragged about for years.
I looked up.
"They used my property as collateral?""
Marcus nodded.
"Without your authorization.""
I gripped the edge of the folder.
"How?""
"They submitted a forged consent document and a misleading valuation certificate. The lender believed the Whitmore group had the necessary authority.""
I looked at him.
"Can they take the building?""
"Not lawfully, provided we act immediately. But the situation is serious.""
I leaned back against the pillow.
For a long time, I said nothing.
Then I asked the question that had been sitting in my mind since the previous evening.
"Why would Patricia do this?""
Marcus opened another page.
"We found several internal emails. One of them is particularly revealing.""
He handed me a printed copy.
The message was from Patricia to Daniel.
*Daniel, your wife has no understanding of how business works. Get her to sign the papers before the baby arrives. Once everything is transferred, we can finally stop depending on her family.*
I read it twice.
Then I found the reply.
*She won't sign unless I tell her it's for our daughter.*
Patricia's response was even shorter.
*Then use the baby. She'll do anything for that child.*
My throat tightened.
I pressed a hand against my stomach.
All those times Daniel had spoken about our daughter's future.
The nursery.
The private school.
The house near the lake.
Had he been planning to use our child as leverage?
Marcus quietly closed the folder.
"Ms. Carter, I recommend that you stop communicating with your husband about the financial matters. Let our legal team handle it.""
I nodded.
"One more thing.""
"Yes?""
"I want to know whether Patricia knew about the forged signature.""
Marcus hesitated.
"Based on the emails, she helped coordinate the paperwork.""
I looked down at the page.
"Then she's going to have to explain it.""
At 9:15 a.m., Patricia called.
I let it ring twice before answering.
"Nia, what on earth have you done?""
I glanced at Marcus.
He shook his head slightly, signaling me to let her speak.
"What are you referring to, Patricia?""
"Don't play innocent. Daniel says you've frozen the company accounts.""
"Some of them.""
"Do you have any idea how many employees depend on that company?""
I almost smiled.
There it was.
The familiar trick.
Whenever Patricia wanted something, she turned it into a moral obligation.
"Are the employees responsible for the unauthorized transfers?""
She went silent.
Then her voice sharpened.
"What transfers?""
I looked at Marcus.
He raised his eyebrows.
Interesting.
"Four point eight million dollars.""
"That's a business transaction.""
"To Brielle's company?""
Another pause.
"Daniel handles those matters.""
"And the eleven million dollars in liabilities you tried to transfer into my holding company?""
Patricia's breathing changed.
"Who told you that?""
"So it's true.""
"You're twisting everything.""
I picked up the forged document.
"Patricia, that's my signature.""
"Well, perhaps you signed something and forgot.""
I felt my jaw tighten.
"No. I didn't.""
She gave a cold laugh.
"You're pregnant, emotional, and clearly overwhelmed. Daniel warned me you might behave irrationally.""
I stared at the phone.
"Did you really think I wouldn't check?""
"Listen to me, young lady. You married into this family. Daniel has given you a beautiful life. You have a house, cars, everything you could possibly need.""
"Daniel didn't give me the house.""
"What?""
"The house is mine.""
Patricia laughed.
"Don't be ridiculous.""
"And the cars?""
Silence.
"Mine too.""
"You're lying.""
I looked at the framed hospital photograph of my daughter on the bedside table.
"Would you like me to send you the ownership documents?""
Her voice became icy.
"You ungrateful little girl. After everything we've done for you—"
I interrupted her.
"What exactly have you done for me, Patricia?""
She didn't answer.
"You humiliated me at every family gathering. You told people I was beneath Daniel. You laughed when I fell. And now I've discovered you've been using my assets to secure loans I never approved.""
"You're making accusations you cannot prove.""
Marcus slid a document toward me.
I glanced at it.
It was a copy of an email Patricia had sent to the lender.
Her own words.
Her own account.
Her own signature.
I looked at the phone.
"I think we can prove quite a lot.""
Then I ended the call.
At 11:30 a.m., Daniel arrived.
This time, he came alone.
He entered the room carrying a small gift bag from a luxury baby store.
"Hey," he said softly.
I looked at the bag.
"What is that?""
"Something for the baby.""
He placed it beside the flowers.
Inside was a tiny pink cashmere blanket.
It was beautiful.
Expensive.
And completely meaningless.
"How are you feeling?"" he asked.
"Better.""
"Good.""
He pulled the visitor's chair closer.
"Listen, Nia. I know things got out of hand last night.""
I looked at him.
"Your mother pulled a chair away from me.""
"I spoke to her.""
"And?""
"She's sorry.""
I waited.
Daniel sighed.
"She said she didn't realize how close you were to the chair.""
"That's not an apology.""
"Can we not argue?""
He reached for my hand.
I moved it away.
His expression hardened.
"You're making this difficult.""
I stared at him.
"You're the one who forged my signature.""
His face went completely still.
For several seconds, neither of us spoke.
Then he leaned forward.
"Who showed you that?""
"Does it matter?""
"Yes. Because you're being given incomplete information.""
"Then complete it.""
He looked toward Marcus, who was standing near the window.
"Can we talk alone?""
"No.""
"Nia.""
"Anything you have to say can be said in front of my financial manager.""
Daniel stood and walked toward the window.
He rubbed his forehead.
"The company was in trouble.""
"How much trouble?""
"Temporary cash-flow problems.""
"Eleven million dollars worth?""
He turned around.
"Those figures are exaggerated.""
"And the four-point-eight-million-dollar transfer?""
"An investment.""
"In Brielle's company?""
"She was helping us.""
I shook my head.
"Daniel, you used my property as collateral.""
"We were going to repay it.""
"With what?""
He didn't answer.
I felt a strange calm settling over me.
"How long have you been planning to transfer the debt to my holding company?""
He stared at the floor.
"Since August.""
I nodded slowly.
August.
Five months earlier.
The same month he had taken me to dinner and told me how excited he was about becoming a father.
The same month he had kissed my stomach and promised our daughter would never want for anything.
"Did you ever intend to tell me?""
He looked at me.
"Of course.""
"When?""
"When everything was settled.""
"After I signed?""
He didn't respond.
I turned away.
Daniel stepped closer.
"Listen, Nia. I made mistakes. But everything I did was for our future.""
I looked back at him.
"Whose future?""
He opened his mouth.
Before he could answer, his phone rang.
He glanced at the screen.
I saw the name.
*Patricia.*
He declined the call.
Then it rang again.
This time, he answered.
"What?""
I watched his expression change.
His shoulders stiffened.
His eyes moved toward me.
"What do you mean the bank is there?""
A pause.
Then he said something that made Marcus immediately straighten.
"Don't let them inside.""
Daniel ended the call.
I looked at him.
"What happened?""
He swallowed.
"Your people have gone to the headquarters.""
I didn't move.
"What people?""
"The lawyers. The security team. The bank representatives.""
He stared at me.
Then, in a voice barely above a whisper, he asked:
"Nia, did you just take control of my company?""
I reached for the pink blanket beside me.
"No, Daniel.""
I looked directly into his eyes.
"I took back what was mine.""
His phone vibrated again.
He checked the message.
And for the first time, I saw genuine panic on my husband's face.
Because the message wasn't from Patricia.
It was from his company's chief financial officer.
*Daniel, the board has called an emergency meeting. Your position as CEO is being challenged. And there's someone here asking for the original contract from the day your company was founded.*
Daniel slowly raised his eyes toward me.
"Who?""
I smiled faintly.
"Someone you've never bothered to meet.""
And then the hospital room door opened.
A tall, silver-haired man walked inside carrying a familiar black leather folder.
Daniel recognized him immediately.
His face turned white.
It was my father-in-law's former attorney.
May you like
The man who had witnessed the original agreement.
And he was carrying the one document Daniel had spent three years making sure I never saw.
