Chapter 8: The Fortune He Never Knew Existed

The following morning, Arthur arrived at my house before sunrise.

He carried a document box marked with my father-in-law's initials.

Marcus followed him into the study.

I was already awake.

I hadn't been able to stop thinking about Vanessa's revelation.

A second family trust.

One created shortly before Richard died.

And my daughter was its beneficiary.

Arthur placed the box on the desk.

"Richard instructed me to keep this separate from the main company records.""

"Why?""

"Because he believed Daniel and Patricia might attempt to interfere with the inheritance.""

I stared at the box.

"How much money are we talking about?""

Arthur opened the lid.

"Approximately twenty-six million dollars in liquid assets, along with several undeveloped properties.""

I slowly sat down.

"Twenty-six million?""

"Yes.""

"Why didn't anyone tell me?""

"Because the trust was established for your daughter. Richard wanted the assets protected until she reached adulthood.""

Marcus examined the documents.

"The beneficiary designation is clear.""

Arthur nodded.

"Your daughter is the sole beneficiary. You are named as her legal guardian and trustee until she reaches the required age.""

I looked at the papers.

My daughter's name appeared in elegant black lettering.

She wasn't even born yet.

Richard had created a future for her while Daniel was busy building a reputation.

I touched the page.

"He knew Daniel might try to take everything.""

Arthur nodded.

"He feared it.""

I looked up.

"Did Patricia know?""

"She suspected something. She had been asking Richard about certain investments before his death.""

Marcus turned another page.

"There's a property listed here that I recognize.""

Arthur looked over.

"The old waterfront parcel?""

"Yes. It's the land Daniel has been trying to sell to a private development group.""

I frowned.

"Can he sell it?""

"No," Arthur replied.

"The property belongs to your daughter's trust.""

I leaned back.

Suddenly, several things made sense.

Daniel's unusual interest in the waterfront project.

Patricia's insistence that I sign the revised ownership agreement.

The forged documents.

They weren't simply trying to transfer debt.

They were trying to reach the one asset Richard had hidden beyond their control.

"Why didn't Richard tell me directly?"" I asked.

Arthur's voice softened.

"He intended to. But his health deteriorated quickly. He asked me to wait until there was a legitimate reason to activate the trust.""

I looked at the documents again.

"Well, I think we've found one.""

At 9:00 a.m., the board meeting began.

I joined through a secure video conference from my study.

Marcus sat beside me.

Arthur attended in person at the company's headquarters.

On the screen, I saw eight board members seated around a long conference table.

Daniel sat at the center.

He wore a charcoal suit and a silver tie.

Patricia was beside him.

She had no official position on the board, but apparently that had never stopped her from attending important meetings.

When my image appeared, Daniel leaned toward his microphone.

"Nia, I wasn't aware you intended to participate.""

I looked at him.

"I'm the majority owner. Did you expect me to miss it?""

A few board members exchanged glances.

Daniel cleared his throat.

"Let's remain professional.""

Arthur opened the meeting.

"The purpose of today's hearing is to examine allegations of unauthorized financial transfers, improper use of company property, and falsification of ownership documents.""

Daniel immediately interrupted.

"I object to the wording.""

Arthur looked at him.

"On what grounds?""

"These transactions were approved business decisions.""

Marcus passed a document to Arthur.

Arthur displayed it on the main screen.

"Then perhaps you can explain this transfer.""

A bank statement appeared.

Four million eight hundred thousand dollars.

Sent to Brielle's company.

Daniel adjusted his tie.

"It was a short-term investment.""

"Where is the investment agreement?""

"Being finalized.""

"Where is the board approval?""

Daniel looked toward Patricia.

She shook her head almost imperceptibly.

Arthur continued.

"Perhaps you can explain the five property transfers.""

A second document appeared.

This time, Daniel's expression changed.

"Those were restructuring arrangements.""

"Approved by whom?""

"Senior management.""

"Which senior management members?""

Daniel rubbed his forehead.

Arthur turned another page.

"Your name appears on all five authorizations.""

Daniel leaned forward.

"I was acting in the company's best interests.""

I finally spoke.

"Then why did you use my property as collateral without my consent?""

Daniel looked directly into the camera.

"Nia, we've discussed this.""

"No. You've avoided discussing it.""

Patricia reached for his arm.

"Daniel, don't let her provoke you.""

One of the board members, a man named Robert Hayes, cleared his throat.

"Mrs. Whitmore, are you alleging that the company used assets belonging to your family trust without authorization?""

"Yes.""

Robert looked toward Daniel.

"Is that accurate?""

Daniel hesitated.

"The ownership arrangements are complicated.""

Arthur placed the original agreement on the screen.

"Not anymore.""

He pointed to the relevant section.

"The Carter trust retains ownership of the property portfolio. Daniel's authority is limited to operational management.""

Robert removed his glasses.

"Daniel, did you know this?""

Daniel's face reddened.

"Of course I knew.""

"Then why did you submit a document claiming otherwise?""

Daniel turned toward Arthur.

"Because the company needed flexibility.""

I spoke again.

"Flexibility to steal my assets?""

He slammed his hand against the table.

"Enough!""

The boardroom went silent.

I looked at him calmly.

"That's what I thought.""

Patricia suddenly stood.

"This is a personal vendetta.""

Arthur looked up.

"Mrs. Whitmore, you are not a board member.""

"I am Daniel's mother.""

"That doesn't give you voting rights.""

She ignored him.

"Everyone here needs to understand what kind of woman Nia is. She married Daniel knowing he was building a company. She encouraged him to take risks, and now she's using her family's money to destroy his reputation.""

I watched her.

"Patricia, do you remember telling me that Daniel built everything from nothing?""

She folded her arms.

"Yes.""

"Then perhaps you can explain why your daughter received nearly five million dollars from a company she never worked for.""

Patricia's mouth opened.

Nothing came out.

I continued.

"And perhaps you can explain why your name appears on a guarantee against property you don't own.""

Robert looked sharply toward her.

"Patricia, were you involved in these transactions?""

She looked at Daniel.

He didn't help her.

For the first time, I saw her realize that her son might sacrifice her to save himself.

She sat down slowly.

Arthur opened the final document.

"There is one more matter.""

He displayed the trust registration.

"Richard Whitmore established a separate family trust for the benefit of Daniel's unborn daughter.""

Daniel's head snapped up.

"What?""

I watched his face.

He genuinely hadn't known.

Arthur continued.

"The trust contains approximately twenty-six million dollars and several properties. Nia Carter Whitmore is the designated trustee.""

Daniel stood.

"That's impossible.""

Arthur didn't blink.

"Your father signed the agreement himself.""

"Why wasn't I told?""

"Because you were not the beneficiary.""

Daniel looked toward Patricia.

She had gone completely pale.

I understood then.

She had spent years trying to control my assets without realizing Richard had already protected the most important part of the family's future.

Our daughter.

Daniel leaned toward the camera.

"Nia, we need to talk.""

I shook my head.

"No. We don't.""

He looked furious.

"You can't keep my daughter from me.""

I felt my chest tighten.

"Nobody is keeping her from you. But you will not use her inheritance to cover your debts.""

The board members began speaking among themselves.

Robert finally raised his hand.

"Given the seriousness of these allegations, I move that Daniel Whitmore be suspended from his executive duties pending an independent investigation.""

Another member seconded the motion.

The vote began.

One by one, hands were raised.

When the final result appeared on the screen, Daniel's face had lost all color.

Seven votes in favor.

One abstention.

His suspension was approved.

Patricia stood again.

"You cannot do this!""

Robert looked at her.

"We just did.""

Daniel pushed his chair backward.

Then he looked directly at me.

"This isn't over.""

I didn't answer.

Because I knew it wasn't.

As the meeting ended, Marcus received an urgent message.

He read it twice.

Then he turned toward me.

"Nia, there's a problem.""

"What now?""

"The trust's original bank account has been accessed.""

My stomach dropped.

"By whom?""

Marcus looked at the screen.

"Someone using your daughter's beneficiary identification details.""

I felt the room spin.

"That's impossible. She's not even born yet.""

Arthur stepped closer.

"Wait.""

He examined the transaction record.

Then his expression changed.

"This isn't a withdrawal.""

"What is it?""

Arthur pointed to the final line.

"A request to change the trustee.""

I stared at the name displayed beneath it.

May you like

*Patricia Whitmore.*

And the request had been submitted the previous evening.
