Chapter 4: The Contract Daniel Buried

The man standing in the hospital doorway was Arthur Collins.

He was seventy-two, silver-haired, and carried himself with the quiet confidence of someone who had spent decades watching powerful people make expensive mistakes.

Daniel knew him.

Everyone who had ever worked with Whitmore Development knew him.

Arthur had been my father-in-law's personal attorney for nearly twenty years. He had drafted the original company agreements, handled the estate after my father-in-law's death, and disappeared from the Whitmore family's business affairs shortly after Daniel became CEO.

Daniel had always told me Arthur retired.

Apparently, that wasn't the whole story.

"Arthur," Daniel said, forcing a smile.

"What are you doing here?""

Arthur closed the door behind him.

"Good morning, Daniel.""

"I wasn't expecting you.""

"Clearly.""

Arthur placed his leather folder on the table beside my bed.

Then he looked at me.

"Mrs. Whitmore, I apologize for arriving without an appointment. Marcus informed me that you had finally discovered the unauthorized transactions.""

I nodded.

"Thank you for coming.""

Daniel looked between us.

"Wait. You two have been talking?""

Arthur removed his glasses.

"Your wife is the majority beneficial owner of the property holding company. I believe she's entitled to know what's happening.""

Daniel laughed nervously.

"That's not how the arrangement works.""

Arthur opened the folder.

"Would you like me to refresh your memory?""

Daniel didn't answer.

Arthur withdrew a document with a faded blue cover.

"This is the original founding agreement for Whitmore Development, signed by your father, yourself, and Mrs. Whitmore's family trust.""

Daniel stepped closer.

"That agreement was superseded.""

"Some provisions were amended," Arthur replied.

"Not the ownership structure.""

He turned the document toward me.

I saw my father's signature.

Then my father-in-law's.

And finally, Daniel's.

Arthur pointed to a paragraph near the bottom.

"Your father-in-law wanted his son to run the company. He did not want his son to own it outright. He understood that Daniel lacked sufficient capital to build the business independently.""

Daniel's face darkened.

"My father trusted me.""

"He trusted you with management authority. Those are different things.""

Arthur continued.

"The company was established using three principal assets: the original land portfolio, the development capital, and the operating license. The land portfolio belonged to the Carter family trust. Your wife's family supplied the development capital. Your father-in-law contributed the operating network.""

I looked at Daniel.

He was staring at the document as though he wanted to tear it apart.

Arthur turned another page.

"Under section twelve, any unauthorized transfer of company assets exceeding one million dollars triggers an immediate review of executive authority.""

Marcus nodded.

"We've already initiated that review.""

Daniel slammed his palm against the table.

"This is absurd!""

The nurse outside the room knocked.

I glanced toward the door.

"Please don't raise your voice.""

Daniel ignored me.

"You can't take my company away because of a family argument!""

Arthur calmly closed the folder.

"Daniel, this is not a family argument. It's a corporate governance matter involving potentially fraudulent transactions.""

"Those transactions were temporary!""

"Then you should have no difficulty explaining them.""

Daniel looked at me.

"Nia, tell them to stop.""

I watched him for a moment.

"Why?""

"Because we're married.""

I almost laughed.

"Yesterday, when your mother pulled a chair away from me, you reminded me not to ruin Christmas. Today, you're reminding me we're married.""

I lowered my voice.

"Which part of marriage includes forging my signature?""

He looked away.

Arthur removed another document.

"There is also a provision concerning the executive succession.""

Daniel's eyes snapped toward him.

"Don't.""

Arthur ignored the warning.

"Your father-in-law included a clause stating that if the managing director engages in financial misconduct involving company assets, the board may appoint an independent administrator.""

I frowned.

"Who would that be?""

Arthur looked directly at me.

"That decision ultimately rests with the majority owner.""

Daniel let out a bitter laugh.

"She's pregnant. She doesn't know anything about running a development company.""

I felt my face go still.

Arthur's expression hardened.

"Your wife has been reviewing your quarterly financial reports for three years. She identified discrepancies in your operating expenses last year, remember?""

Daniel said nothing.

Arthur continued.

"She also personally approved the emergency funding that saved your company from bankruptcy.""

I looked at my husband.

He had never mentioned that to anyone.

In fact, he had always described the rescue funding as a personal achievement.

Arthur gathered the documents.

"Mrs. Whitmore, the board will convene at three this afternoon. You are entitled to attend, although I would understand if your medical circumstances prevent you from doing so.""

I looked at Marcus.

"Can we arrange a remote connection?""

"Absolutely.""

Daniel shook his head.

"You're really doing this?""

I looked down at my daughter.

Then back at him.

"I'm protecting her future.""

Arthur picked up his briefcase.

"One final matter, Daniel.""

Daniel looked exhausted.

"What now?""

"Your father left a sealed letter with me. He instructed me to deliver it to Nia if you ever attempted to transfer ownership of the company without her consent.""

Daniel went completely still.

Arthur removed a cream-colored envelope.

My name was written across the front.

Not Daniel's.

Mine.

And beneath it, in my father-in-law's unmistakable handwriting, were six words:

*For the woman who saved my son.*

Daniel took a step backward.

"That letter was supposed to be destroyed.""

Arthur looked at him.

"Your father disagreed.""

I reached for the envelope.

And before I could open it, Daniel whispered something that changed everything.

"My father knew about Vanessa.""

I stopped.

"Who?""

Daniel looked at the floor.

"Vanessa.""

Arthur's expression changed.

Marcus immediately reached for his phone.

I looked at my husband.

"What does Vanessa have to do with my father-in-law?""

Daniel didn't answer.

But Arthur did.

"Quite a lot, I'm afraid.""

He glanced at the sealed letter.

"Because Vanessa Cole was the person your father-in-law originally intended to put in charge of the company's internal financial investigations.""

I stared at him.

"Why?""

Arthur hesitated.

May you like

Then he said:

"Because she was the one who discovered the first missing millions.""
