Chapter 11: The Woman Who Entered Ethan's Hospital Room

The recording arrived at 10:12 the following morning.

I was sitting beside Nia at the dining table.

Brielle stood behind us, gripping the back of a chair.

Daniel had arranged for us to view the footage through a secure video link. A hospital administrator joined the call, along with an investigator who had been assigned to review the old complaint.

The video was grainy.

Black and white.

The timestamp read 12:43 a.m.

A nurse walked past Ethan's hospital room.

Then someone appeared at the end of the corridor.

A woman.

She wore a dark coat and carried a handbag.

She looked left.

Then right.

And entered Ethan's room.

Nia gasped.

Brielle grabbed her mother's arm.

"Who is that?""

I leaned closer.

The woman stayed inside for approximately seven minutes.

When she emerged, she was carrying a small envelope.

She walked toward the elevators without looking back.

Daniel paused the footage.

"Do either of you recognize her?""

Nia stared at the screen.

Then she whispered:

"That's my sister.""

I turned toward her.

"Your sister?""

Nia nodded.

"Elaine.""

I had met Elaine twice.

She lived in another state and rarely visited.

I remembered her as a quiet woman who always wore her hair in a neat bun and spoke in a careful, measured voice.

"What was she doing at the hospital?""

Nia looked devastated.

"I don't know.""

Brielle stared at the screen.

"Mom, you said Aunt Elaine wasn't there that night.""

"I thought she wasn't.""

Daniel resumed the recording.

At 12:51 a.m., Elaine returned to the corridor.

This time, she entered the room again.

Five minutes later, she emerged empty-handed.

Then the recording ended.

The hospital administrator spoke.

"We recovered this footage during a review of archived materials. The original investigation did not include it because the camera system was not connected to the main security network.""

I looked at Daniel.

"Can we speak to Elaine?""

"She's already been contacted.""

"What did she say?""

"She claims she visited Ethan to deliver personal belongings.""

"Then why did she hide the visit?""

Daniel didn't answer.

The investigator spoke instead.

"Mr. Carter, we're also reviewing the medication records. There are discrepancies between the medication administered and the entries in the discharge summary.""

I felt my stomach tighten.

"Are you suggesting someone changed his medication?""

"We're not suggesting anything yet. We need the original records and a qualified medical review.""

Nia began crying.

I put my arm around her.

"Did Elaine know about Ethan's concerns?""

Nia nodded slowly.

"Yes. I told her.""

"When?""

"Two days before he died.""

I turned toward her.

"What did you tell her?""

"That Caleb was taking money from Brielle's trust. I asked her to help me understand what Ethan wanted.""

"Did she offer to help?""

"She said she would speak to Caleb.""

Brielle looked up.

"Maybe she was helping him.""

Nia shook her head.

"I don't know.""

My phone vibrated.

An incoming call.

Elaine.

I answered and put it on speaker.

"Nia," she said immediately.

My wife froze.

"Elaine?""

"Please tell me you're not involved in this investigation.""

I looked at Daniel's video window.

"Why would you ask that?""

There was a long silence.

Then Elaine said, "Marcus, I need to explain something.""

"Then explain.""

"I visited Ethan that night.""

"We know.""

"Vanessa told me he had asked for me.""

I frowned.

"Why would Ethan ask for you?""

"Because he had information about Caleb. He wanted someone outside the immediate family to know.""

I glanced at Nia.

"What information?""

Elaine took a breath.

"He had discovered that the trust had been altered.""

Daniel leaned toward the microphone.

"Ms. Carter, what exactly did you remove from Ethan's room?""

Silence.

Then Elaine said, "A letter.""

"What letter?""

"A letter addressed to Brielle.""

Brielle stepped closer to the phone.

"Where is it?""

"I don't have it anymore.""

"Who did you give it to?""

Elaine didn't answer.

Nia's voice trembled.

"Elaine, please. What happened that night?""

Her sister began crying.

"I thought I was helping you.""

"How?""

"Caleb told me that Ethan was going to accuse everyone. He said the documents would destroy the family. He said if the trust became public, Brielle would lose everything.""

I felt my jaw tighten.

"Did Caleb pay you?""

Elaine was silent.

"Answer me.""

"Yes.""

Nia covered her mouth.

"How much?""

"Twenty thousand dollars.""

My wife began sobbing.

I stared at the phone.

"You accepted money to remove a letter from a dying man's hospital room?""

Elaine's voice cracked.

"I didn't know what was inside!""

"You didn't think to ask?""

"He was already very sick. Caleb told me the letter was just another accusation.""

Brielle was crying now.

"What did Dad write to me?""

Elaine hesitated.

"Something about your inheritance.""

"Where is it?""

"I gave it to Caleb.""

The room went silent.

Daniel closed his folder.

"Ms. Carter, I strongly advise you not to discuss this further without legal counsel.""

Elaine ignored him.

"Nia, there's something else you need to know.""

My wife looked up.

"What?""

"Ethan wasn't afraid of Caleb because of the money.""

I leaned forward.

"Then what was he afraid of?""

Elaine's voice dropped.

"He believed Caleb had been using Brielle's identity for years. He had opened accounts in her name when she was still a child.""

Brielle stared at the phone.

"What?""

"He used your Social Security number. He used your trust as collateral. He even opened a business account using your name.""

I felt sick.

"Why would he do that?""

"Because he needed money. He had debts, Marcus. Serious debts.""

I looked at Daniel.

"Can that be verified?""

Daniel nodded.

"We'll investigate.""

Elaine continued.

"Caleb told me he would repay everything once the property loan went through. He said nobody would lose anything.""

I stood.

"What property loan?""

Elaine started crying harder.

"The house, Marcus.""

I felt my blood run cold.

"Whose house?""

"Yours.""

She continued before I could speak.

"He told me that once Brielle became the legal owner, he could sell the property and use the proceeds to clear the trust debts.""

I looked at Brielle.

She was shaking her head.

"I never agreed to sell the house.""

I believed her.

At least, I wanted to.

Daniel suddenly interrupted.

"Ms. Carter, do you know where the original letter is now?""

Elaine hesitated.

"Yes.""

"Where?""

"Caleb has it.""

"Where is Caleb?""

"I don't know.""

I looked at Nia.

Her face had gone completely white.

Then Elaine whispered:

"There's another copy, though.""

"Where?""

"In Ethan's old safe deposit box.""

Daniel sat upright.

"Which bank?""

Elaine gave him the name.

Then she added something that made everyone freeze.

"Ethan left a second key with Brielle. He told her never to give it to Caleb.""

I turned toward my stepdaughter.

"Do you have another key?""

Brielle slowly shook her head.

"No.""

Then she looked at the little brass key from the storage unit.

"Wait.""

She reached into her handbag and removed a small silver object.

It was attached to an old key ring shaped like a star.

"I've had this since I was fifteen.""

I took it.

A tiny number was engraved on the metal tag.

*SDB-9081.*

Daniel stared at it.

"That's a safe deposit box number.""

Before he could say anything else, Elaine spoke again.

"Marcus, there's one more thing.""

"What?""

"Caleb knows you've found the hospital recording.""

I looked toward the window.

"How?""

"Because he called me ten minutes ago.""

"And?""

Her voice trembled.

"He said if Brielle opens that safe deposit box, he'll make sure she goes to prison.""

The call ended.

Brielle sank into the chair.

I looked at Nia.

Then at the two keys lying on the table.

Seven years of lies.

Seven years of missing money.

And one final letter that could explain everything.

But before we could make arrangements to visit the bank, Daniel received an urgent notification.

He read it.

Then his expression changed.

"Mr. Carter, we have a problem.""

"What?""

"The attempted loan against your house has been approved.""

My blood ran cold.

"How?""

"Someone submitted additional documents this morning.""

"Who?""

May you like

Daniel looked directly at me.

"Brielle Carter.""
