Chapter 9: The Letter That Accused His Own Daughter
I read Brielle's name again.
Then I looked at my stepdaughter.
She was standing beside the attic staircase, her arms wrapped tightly around herself.
"Why is your name in this letter?""
Her eyes widened.
"I don't know.""
Nia reached for the paper.
"Let me see.""
I handed it to her.
She read the sentence.
Then she shook her head.
"No. This can't be right.""
Brielle began crying.
"Mom, I swear I don't know what this means.""
I examined the letter more carefully.
There was another paragraph beneath the name.
Brielle doesn't know what she's being used for. Caleb has convinced her that the money belongs to her immediately. He has been asking her to sign documents without explaining what they contain.
I exhaled.
"So Ethan knew.""
Nia nodded slowly.
"He suspected Caleb was manipulating her.""
I continued reading.
If something happens to me, please don't blame her for everything. She is young, and she believes the people promising to help her.
But you must protect her from the consequences of what she has signed.
I looked at Brielle.
"Did your father ever tell you to sign documents for Caleb?""
She nodded through her tears.
"When I was fifteen, he asked me to sign something at the hospital.""
"What?""
"I don't remember exactly. He said it was about my inheritance.""
Nia looked shocked.
"Ethan never told me that.""
Brielle wiped her face.
"Caleb said it was normal. He told me Dad wanted me to sign so I could receive the money when I turned eighteen.""
I felt my stomach tighten.
"Did you understand what you were signing?""
"No.""
"Did anyone explain it?""
She shook her head.
"Vanessa said it was just paperwork.""
I closed the letter.
"Then we need to find out what those papers were.""
I called Daniel and explained what we had discovered.
He asked me to photograph every document and send the images immediately.
After examining them, he called back.
"Mr. Carter, the letter is important. But there's something more concerning.""
"What?""
"The original trust contains a provision requiring the beneficiary's signature for certain amendments after her eighteenth birthday. If someone obtained a signature before that date and used it later, the amendment could be invalid.""
I looked at Brielle.
"Could someone have used her childhood signature to change the trust?""
"Possibly. We need the original documents to establish that.""
I looked at the notebook.
"Storage Unit 214?""
"Yes. I've already requested information from the facility. We may need a court order to access the contents.""
"How long?""
"I can't promise a specific time.""
I rubbed my forehead.
"Someone is threatening my wife. Someone is trying to take my house. I don't have time for a long investigation.""
Daniel's voice became firm.
"Neither do I want you taking unnecessary risks. If the people involved have committed fraud, the worst thing you can do is confront them without proper evidence.""
He paused.
"There's one more thing.""
"What?""
"I reviewed the financial transactions Brielle found. The company receiving the money has been dissolved.""
"Can you trace it?""
"Not yet. But the registered director was not Caleb.""
"Who was it?""
Daniel took a breath.
"Vanessa Reed.""
I ended the call and looked at the others.
For several seconds, nobody moved.
Then Brielle whispered, "I want to tell you something.""
I turned toward her.
"Go ahead.""
She sat on the attic floor.
"Last month, Vanessa told me she had found a way to release my inheritance early. She said I could have the money if I signed a few documents.""
"Did you?""
"Yes.""
"How many?""
"Four.""
Nia covered her mouth.
Brielle continued.
"She also told me that Mom had already agreed to transfer the house to me.""
Nia shook her head.
"I never agreed.""
"I know that now.""
"Why did you believe her?""
Brielle's voice cracked.
"Because she showed me an email.""
"What email?""
"One supposedly from Mom.""
I looked at Nia.
"Did you send Brielle an email about the house?""
"No.""
Brielle pulled out her phone.
"I still have it.""
She opened the message.
The sender appeared to be Nia's email address.
The subject line read:
*Our Family Property Agreement.*
The message stated that Nia had agreed to transfer her interest in the house to Brielle in exchange for financial assistance.
At the bottom was a scanned signature.
Nia's.
But I immediately noticed something.
The signature was too clean.
It looked copied from another document.
"Have you ever seen this?"" I asked Nia.
She shook her head.
"No.""
I took photographs of the screen.
Then I noticed the date.
The email had been sent from an account created only six weeks earlier.
Brielle stared at it.
"Vanessa told me it was Mom's private email.""
Nia began crying.
"She never told me any of this.""
I sat beside my wife.
"We're going to sort it out.""
She nodded, but her eyes remained fixed on the screen.
Then Brielle said something that changed the direction of the entire conversation.
"Marcus, there's another document.""
"What document?""
"The one Vanessa made me sign at the hotel.""
I turned.
"You signed something at the hotel?""
She nodded.
"Last week. She said it was a release form.""
"What did it release?""
"I don't know. She wouldn't let me keep a copy.""
I stared at her.
"Why would you sign something without reading it?""
Brielle looked ashamed.
"Because Caleb said he would give me the money afterward.""
I felt my patience slipping.
"How much?""
"Fifty thousand.""
Nia stood.
"Brielle!""
"I know!""
"Do you understand what you've done?""
"I was trying to get out of debt!""
"By signing documents you didn't understand?""
Brielle began sobbing.
"I thought I was fixing everything!""
I raised my hand.
"Both of you. Stop.""
The attic fell silent.
I turned toward Brielle.
"Did Vanessa tell you what would happen if you refused?""
She nodded.
"She said she would tell the police I had stolen money from the trust.""
I frowned.
"Had you?""
Brielle hesitated.
Then she reached into her pocket and removed a folded receipt.
"I took money.""
Nia stared at her.
"How much?""
"Twenty thousand.""
I felt the room shift.
"From where?""
"From the account Vanessa gave me access to.""
"Was it your trust account?""
"I thought it was.""
"Did you spend it?""
Brielle nodded.
"Some of it.""
"On what?""
She lowered her head.
"Paying off my credit cards. My car. And the money I owed Caleb.""
I closed my eyes.
This was worse than I had imagined.
But before I could respond, Brielle looked up.
"Marcus, there's something you need to know.""
"What?""
"When I signed the release form, Vanessa told me the money would only be released if Mom was declared legally unfit to manage my inheritance.""
Nia went completely still.
I stared at Brielle.
"What does that mean?""
"She said they needed evidence that Mom was unstable. That she had been stealing from the trust and making bad decisions.""
I remembered the threatening letters.
The fake withdrawal request.
The forged property documents.
Someone had been building a case against Nia.
Not just trying to steal money.
Trying to make her look like a criminal.
My phone rang.
Daniel again.
"Mr. Carter, we've received a response from the storage facility.""
I stood.
"What did they say?""
"The unit is registered under Vanessa Reed's name.""
"Can we access it?""
"Not yet. But the facility manager has confirmed something unusual.""
"What?""
"The unit was rented seven years ago, shortly before Ethan died. It has been paid in full every year since.""
I looked at Nia.
"What's unusual about that?""
Daniel lowered his voice.
"The manager says someone accessed it yesterday.""
My stomach tightened.
"Who?""
He paused.
Then he said:
"Your stepdaughter, Brielle Carter.""
I turned toward her.
She shook her head violently.
"No. I haven't been there!""
Daniel continued.
"And Mr. Carter, the access log shows someone entered using Brielle's personal identification code.""
I looked at my stepdaughter.
Her face had gone completely white.
Then a final message appeared on my phone.
It was from Vanessa.
*You have the wrong enemy. Brielle isn't the person you need to investigate. Ask her who gave Caleb the key to Ethan's hospital room.*
I slowly raised my eyes.
Brielle was staring at the attic floor.
And Nia was whispering something I could barely hear.
"Oh, God.""
I turned toward her.
"What?""
May you like
She looked at me with tears streaming down her face.
"Marcus, Brielle wasn't supposed to be at that hospital the night Ethan died.""
