Chapter 13: The Money My Wife Took to Save Her Daughter
Nobody moved.
Daniel Whitmore stood beside the conference table, holding the authorization document that supposedly proved Nia had approved the first withdrawal from Ethan's trust.
My wife looked as though someone had pulled the floor from beneath her.
"That's not what happened," she whispered.
Daniel placed the document down.
"Mrs. Carter, I understand this is difficult.""
"No. You don't understand.""
Her voice cracked.
"I never took Brielle's money.""
"I didn't say you did.""
"You just showed everyone a document with my name on it!""
Brielle was staring at her mother.
"Mom, did you sign it?""
Nia shook her head.
"Not for the reason they're claiming.""
I turned toward Daniel.
"Explain the withdrawal.""
He opened his briefcase and removed another folder.
"Seven years ago, Ethan discovered that Caleb had been transferring money from his business accounts. He believed the situation was becoming dangerous.""
"Why?""
"Caleb had accumulated significant debts. Some involved private lenders. Others involved business partners who were threatening legal action.""
Daniel slid a bank statement across the table.
"Ethan wanted to protect Brielle's inheritance. He arranged for a portion of the trust to be temporarily transferred into a protected account.""
"Who controlled that account?""
"Nia.""
I looked at my wife.
"Is that true?""
She nodded slowly.
"Yes.""
"Why?""
Nia began crying.
"Because Ethan asked me to.""
Daniel continued.
"The authorization was legitimate. Nia agreed to hold the funds until the situation was resolved.""
I looked at the statement.
The amount was $74,000.
The same transaction that had appeared beside Nia's name in Vanessa's spreadsheet.
"So the money wasn't stolen?""
"No," Daniel said.
"But it was never returned to the trust.""
I turned toward Nia.
"What happened to it?""
She pressed her hands together.
"Caleb threatened me.""
"With what?""
"He told me he knew where Brielle went to school. He said he could make her life miserable if I didn't give him the money.""
Brielle looked horrified.
"Uncle Caleb threatened me?""
Nia nodded.
"He said he would tell everyone your father had been involved in illegal business dealings. He threatened to expose private information about Ethan. He knew I was terrified of anything that might hurt you.""
"Did you give him the money?""
"No.""
"Then where did it go?""
Nia looked at me.
"I used it to pay for your father's final medical expenses and to settle a debt he had with the hospital.""
Daniel shook his head.
"That's not entirely accurate.""
Nia stared at him.
"What?""
He opened another document.
"The hospital expenses were paid separately. The $74,000 was transferred into an account that was later closed.""
My wife went completely still.
I looked at Daniel.
"Who closed it?""
He turned the document around.
The account had been opened under a company name.
Carter Family Protection Fund.
The authorized representative was Elaine.
Nia covered her mouth.
"My sister?""
Daniel nodded.
"Elaine received the transfer after you authorized the initial movement. According to the banking records, she subsequently withdrew the funds.""
I felt my jaw tighten.
"Then why does Nia's name appear?""
"Because she initiated the original authorization.""
Nia was shaking her head.
"I thought Elaine was keeping the money safe.""
Brielle stared at her.
"Mom, did Aunt Elaine steal my inheritance?""
"I don't know.""
Daniel closed the folder.
"That's what we need to establish. But I can tell you something else.""
He removed a photocopy of the original trust agreement.
"After Ethan died, the trust was amended without proper authorization. The amendment increased Caleb's control over certain administrative decisions and allowed him to access funds under specific circumstances.""
"Who approved that?"" I asked.
Daniel looked uncomfortable.
"That is where my involvement becomes relevant.""
I stepped closer.
"Tell us.""
Daniel took a long breath.
"I prepared the original amendment, but I refused to submit it because Ethan had not approved the final language.""
"Then how did it become official?""
"Someone used my professional credentials to file a modified version.""
I stared at him.
"Who?""
He looked toward the photograph.
"Vanessa had access to my office at the time. She was working as Ethan's administrative assistant.""
Brielle suddenly stood.
"Then you knew she was involved!""
"I suspected it.""
"You let her get away with it?""
Daniel's face tightened.
"I spent seven years trying to establish what had happened. The original records disappeared. The hospital investigation was closed. Ethan's brother threatened to sue anyone who questioned the trust.""
"That's not an excuse!""
Brielle's voice echoed through the private room.
Daniel lowered his eyes.
"No. It isn't.""
I looked at the USB drive.
"What's on this?""
"I don't know. Ethan gave it to the bank with instructions that it should only be released to Brielle.""
"Then let's have it examined.""
Daniel nodded.
Before we could continue, my phone rang.
Unknown number.
I answered.
"Marcus Carter.""
A woman's voice came through.
"Marcus, this is Elaine.""
Nia immediately stood.
"Put her on speaker.""
I did.
Elaine sounded exhausted.
"I need to speak to Nia.""
My wife leaned toward the phone.
"What did you do with the money?""
There was silence.
Then Elaine began crying.
"I didn't steal it.""
"Then where is it?""
"I gave it to Caleb.""
Brielle closed her eyes.
"Why?""
"Because he said he needed it to protect Ethan's business.""
"That was seven years ago!""
"I know.""
"Where is it now?""
Elaine began sobbing harder.
"Most of it is gone.""
I felt my stomach tighten.
"Who received the money?""
Elaine hesitated.
Then she said:
"Vanessa.""
I looked at Daniel.
He immediately began writing.
Elaine continued.
"She promised Caleb she could recover the money through the trust. She said the house transfer would give them enough collateral to settle everything.""
I closed my eyes.
"So the loan against my house was intended to replace the money they stole.""
"Yes.""
Nia sat down.
"And the threats?""
"They were trying to stop you from talking.""
I felt anger rising.
"Where is Vanessa now?""
"I don't know. But Caleb told me something last night.""
"What?""
Elaine's voice dropped.
"He said the original hospital letter isn't the only evidence Ethan left.""
I looked at the USB drive.
"What else?""
Elaine whispered:
"Ethan recorded a conversation with Caleb the night before he died.""
Then the call ended.
I stared at the phone.
Daniel looked at the USB drive.
"If that recording exists, it could change everything.""
I turned toward Brielle.
"Your father left you the truth.""
She nodded, tears running down her cheeks.
Then she looked at her mother.
"Mom, did Dad know you had taken the money?""
Nia covered her face.
"Yes.""
"What did he say?""
My wife lowered her hands.
"He told me he understood why I did it.""
She swallowed.
"Then he asked me to promise one thing.""
"What?""
"That I would never let Caleb get close to you again.""
Brielle began crying.
Nia reached for her hand.
But before their fingers touched, Daniel's phone rang.
He answered.
Listened.
Then slowly stood.
"What do you mean the storage unit has been emptied?""
I looked at him.
He covered the phone.
"Someone has removed everything from Unit 214.""
"Who?""
Daniel listened again.
Then his expression changed.
"The storage facility manager has identified the person.""
May you like
He looked at Brielle.
"It was Elaine.""
