Chapter 12: The Signature That Could Cost My Stepdaughter Everything

I stared at Daniel.

"That's impossible.""

He turned his laptop toward me.

A loan approval notice filled the screen.

The borrower was listed as Brielle Carter.

The collateral was my home.

The requested amount was $185,000.

And beneath the approval notice was a digital signature.

Brielle's.

She stood up so quickly that her chair fell backward.

"I didn't submit anything!""

Daniel examined the timestamp.

"The application was completed at 8:16 this morning.""

Brielle shook her head.

"I was here. With Mom. I didn't even leave the house.""

I looked at Nia.

"Can you confirm that?""

"Yes. She was here.""

Daniel nodded.

"Then we have evidence that someone may have used her credentials without authorization.""

I rubbed my forehead.

"How can a lender approve a loan against a property when the actual owner hasn't signed?""

"That's precisely what we're challenging. The application included a deed transfer that appears to have been electronically notarized.""

I stared at the screen.

"Who notarized it?""

Daniel enlarged the document.

A name appeared.

*Elaine Carter.*

Nia made a sound somewhere between a gasp and a sob.

"My sister?""

Daniel nodded.

"Her notary identification number is listed here.""

I looked at the date.

The document had supposedly been notarized two days earlier.

I turned toward Nia.

"Did Elaine visit you?""

"No.""

"Did she ask you to sign anything?""

"No.""

Brielle began crying.

"She told me she was helping.""

I turned toward her.

"Who?""

"Vanessa. She said Elaine had arranged everything.""

I sat down slowly.

The same people who had manipulated Brielle into signing documents had now used her identity to secure a loan against my house.

"Daniel, can they take the property?""

"Not immediately. We can challenge the transfer and notify the lender that the application is disputed. But we need to act quickly.""

I looked at Brielle.

"Did you give Vanessa access to your banking information?""

She nodded.

"Yes.""

"Your identification?""

"She photographed my driver's license.""

"Your Social Security number?""

Brielle lowered her head.

"Yes.""

Nia stood.

"Why would you give her all that?""

"Because she said she was helping me!""

"How many times are you going to believe someone who keeps asking you to sign things you don't understand?""

Brielle flinched.

I stepped between them.

"Enough. We need to focus.""

Daniel closed his laptop.

"I'm going to contact the lender and file a formal fraud notice. I'll also arrange for the property records to be flagged.""

"What about Elaine?""

"Her notary credentials will need to be investigated.""

Nia looked devastated.

"She's my sister.""

Daniel's voice softened.

"That doesn't change the evidence.""

At 2:30 p.m., Brielle received a call from an unknown number.

She answered reluctantly.

"Hello?""

I watched her face change.

"Who is this?""

She listened.

Then she stood.

"Where?""

I moved closer.

"Who is it?""

She covered the phone.

"Vanessa.""

I held out my hand.

"Put it on speaker.""

Brielle did.

Vanessa's voice filled the room.

"Sweetheart, you've made a terrible mess.""

Brielle's eyes filled with tears.

"You used my identity.""

"I helped you.""

"You stole my father's money.""

"Careful.""

"Did you take the money from the trust?""

Vanessa sighed.

"Your father was a difficult man. He made financial arrangements that you don't understand.""

"Then explain them.""

"I don't owe you an explanation.""

I stepped forward.

"Vanessa, this is Marcus Carter.""

There was a pause.

Then she laughed.

"Of course. The new husband.""

"Don't contact my family again.""

"Your family?""

"Yes.""

"Interesting. Because I seem to remember your wife asking me for help.""

Nia stood.

"That's a lie.""

Vanessa continued.

"Mrs. Carter, you signed the forms. You accepted the arrangement. Don't pretend you were forced.""

Nia's face went pale.

"What forms?""

"The trust authorization.""

"I never authorized you to take Brielle's inheritance.""

"Then explain your signature.""

Daniel, who was still on the video call, immediately began recording the conversation.

Vanessa laughed again.

"Perhaps your attorney should explain why your name appears on so many documents.""

I stepped closer to the phone.

"You're going to regret threatening her.""

"Marcus, you should be more concerned about your house.""

"That application is being challenged.""

"Good luck with that.""

She paused.

Then her voice became colder.

"By the way, I wouldn't open Ethan's safe deposit box if I were you.""

I looked at Brielle.

"Why?""

"Because there's something inside that could destroy the family you've spent seven years pretending to build.""

The call ended.

Brielle dropped the phone.

Nia sat down.

I looked at Daniel.

"She's bluffing.""

He shook his head.

"Maybe. But we should assume she knows something about the contents.""

I picked up the silver key.

"We're going to the bank.""

An hour later, we stood inside a private room at the bank.

The manager examined Brielle's identification and the key.

After confirming the account details, he led us to a secure area.

Brielle's hands were trembling.

"Are you sure you want to do this?"" Nia asked.

Brielle nodded.

"I need to know what Dad left me.""

The manager unlocked the box.

Inside was a sealed envelope, a small USB drive, several photographs, and a thick bundle of legal papers.

Brielle picked up the envelope.

Her name was written across the front.

*For my daughter, when she is ready to know the truth.*

She began crying.

I placed a hand on her shoulder.

"Take your time.""

She opened it.

The letter was several pages long.

She read the first paragraph silently.

Then she began reading aloud.

My beautiful Brielle,

If this letter has reached you, then I was unable to protect you from the people I once trusted.

I need you to understand something before you read anything else.

Your mother did not steal your inheritance.

Nia covered her mouth.

Brielle continued.

She tried to protect you. I know she made mistakes, but she was frightened, and I made things worse by keeping secrets from her.

The money was placed in trust because I knew Caleb had financial problems. I discovered that he had been using my business accounts to cover his debts.

But I didn't discover everything until Vanessa brought me a document with my daughter's name on it.

Brielle stopped.

I leaned closer.

"What document?""

She turned the page.

There was a photocopy attached.

It was a company registration certificate.

The company was called *Brielle Carter Investments LLC*.

The registration date was seven years earlier.

Brielle was fifteen.

I stared at the document.

"How could you own a company at fifteen?""

Daniel examined it.

"A minor can be named in certain business arrangements, but there would need to be appropriate legal authority.""

I looked at the signatures.

One belonged to Caleb.

Another belonged to Vanessa.

The third was listed as the authorized guardian.

Nia Carter.

My wife stepped backward.

"No.""

She stared at the paper.

"I never signed this.""

Daniel took the document carefully.

"The signature appears to be a reproduction.""

I looked at the letter again.

Brielle continued reading.

Caleb used this company to move money from my business into accounts he controlled. He told me he was protecting Brielle's inheritance, but I discovered that he had already transferred more than two hundred thousand dollars.

I confronted him. He denied everything.

Then I discovered Vanessa had been helping him.

Brielle wiped her cheeks.

"How much money?""

Daniel checked the attached statements.

"Approximately $240,000, based on these records.""

Nia sank into her chair.

"Oh, my God.""

But there was another page.

Brielle turned it over.

Her father had written a final paragraph.

There is one person I have not mentioned. Someone whose involvement I could not prove before I became ill.

That person has access to the original records, knows where the missing money went, and has been helping Caleb since before I discovered the fraud.

If you want the truth, look at the USB drive.

I picked up the small device.

Daniel immediately stopped me.

"Don't connect that to any personal computer. We'll have it examined properly.""

I nodded.

Then I noticed something else inside the box.

A photograph.

It showed Ethan standing beside three people in front of an office building.

Caleb.

Vanessa.

And a third person.

I recognized him immediately.

My blood ran cold.

It was Daniel Whitmore.

I looked at the attorney.

He stared at the photograph.

For the first time since I had met him, he looked genuinely frightened.

Brielle turned toward him.

"Why were you with my father?""

Daniel didn't answer.

I held up the photograph.

"Explain.""

He slowly removed his glasses.

Then he said something that made the entire room go silent.

"Because I wasn't just Ethan's attorney.""

He looked at Nia.

"I was the person who drafted the original trust.""

I felt my stomach tighten.

"Then you knew about the missing money.""

Daniel lowered his eyes.

"I knew about the first transfer.""

"First transfer?""

He nodded.

"And I knew who authorized it.""

I stared at him.

"Who?""

Daniel looked directly at my wife.

"Nia.""

My wife began shaking her head.

"No. That's impossible.""

Daniel opened his briefcase and removed a document.

It carried Nia's name, her signature, and an authorization date from seven years earlier.

Then he turned it toward us.

"Your wife didn't steal the money, Mr. Carter.""

He paused.

"But she did authorize the first withdrawal.""

May you like

And as I looked at Nia, she whispered the words that changed everything.

"I thought I was saving Brielle's life.""
