Chapter 7: The Secret My Wife Had Buried for Seven Years
I read Vanessa's message until the words stopped looking like words.
*Ask Nia why Ethan was begging her not to leave him alone when he died.*
Brielle stood beside the SUV, trembling.
"Marcus, I didn't know she was going to send that.""
I slipped my phone into my pocket.
"How long has Vanessa been threatening you?""
"Since last week.""
"Why didn't you tell me?""
"Because she said she'd expose Mom.""
I looked at the folder in my hands.
"Expose her for what?""
Brielle shook her head.
"I don't know. She keeps saying Mom lied about what happened that night.""
I stared at her.
"Your mother told me she wasn't involved in anything.""
"She wasn't involved in the money. I know that much.""
"How do you know?""
"Because Vanessa kept asking me to get Mom's signature on documents. Mom refused. That's when Vanessa started threatening her.""
I thought about the blank forms Nia had admitted signing.
"Your mother signed some documents.""
Brielle looked horrified.
"What?""
"She told me Vanessa brought her paperwork when she was recovering from a pregnancy complication.""
Brielle covered her mouth.
"Then Vanessa has been lying to both of us.""
I didn't answer.
My phone rang.
Daniel Whitmore.
"Mr. Carter, where are you?""
"At the hotel garage. Brielle found some documents.""
"Do not leave with those documents unsecured. I've contacted an investigator. He'll meet you outside.""
"There's something else. Vanessa just sent me a message about Ethan's death.""
Daniel went silent.
"What exactly did she say?""
I read it aloud.
His response was immediate.
"Get out of that garage.""
"Why?""
"Because Vanessa has just confirmed that she knows you're investigating the estate. And if the documents you've found are authentic, she has a reason to stop you.""
I looked around.
The garage suddenly felt much smaller.
A vehicle engine started somewhere behind us.
"Daniel, what happened the night Ethan died?""
He exhaled.
"That's something Nia needs to explain.""
"She's my wife. I deserve to know.""
"Yes, you do. But I won't speculate about events I didn't witness.""
I ended the call.
Brielle was staring at the phone in her hand.
"Marcus?""
"What?""
"Can we go home?""
I nodded.
But before we reached the elevator, a black sedan entered the garage.
It moved slowly.
Too slowly.
Brielle grabbed my sleeve.
"That's Caleb's car.""
I turned.
The driver's window lowered.
Caleb Carter looked directly at us.
He was in his early fifties, with a neatly trimmed beard and expensive sunglasses.
He smiled as if we had arranged to meet for lunch.
"Brielle," he called.
"Get in.""
She stepped behind me.
"No.""
Caleb's smile disappeared.
"Don't make this difficult.""
I moved toward the elevator.
"She's not going anywhere with you.""
Caleb looked me up and down.
"Marcus. I wondered when you'd get involved.""
"You've been involved long enough.""
He laughed.
"You're making accusations without understanding the situation.""
"Then explain the forged deed.""
His expression changed.
Only slightly.
But I noticed.
"What deed?""
"The one transferring my house to Brielle.""
Caleb removed his sunglasses.
"That sounds like a family misunderstanding.""
"Someone submitted a loan application against my property.""
"Then you should speak to your lawyer.""
"I have.""
Caleb glanced at the folder.
"What's that?""
"Evidence.""
His face hardened.
"Brielle, give me the folder.""
She stepped farther behind me.
"No.""
For a moment, Caleb looked genuinely disappointed.
Then he said something that made my blood run cold.
"Your mother should have taught you not to betray your family.""
Brielle began crying.
"You told me Dad wanted me to have everything.""
Caleb's jaw tightened.
"Your father wanted what was best for you.""
"Then why did he write that you were stealing from me?""
The silence was immediate.
Caleb looked at me.
Then at Brielle.
His voice dropped.
"Where did you get that?""
I pressed the elevator button.
Caleb took one step toward us.
"Listen carefully. You have no idea what you're holding.""
The elevator doors opened.
I pushed Brielle inside.
Caleb called after us.
"Ask Nia about the hospital room! Ask her why she walked out!""
The doors closed.
Brielle sank against the wall.
I stared at the illuminated floor numbers.
My wife's secret was no longer just a secret.
It was something two people were willing to threaten us over.
When I arrived home, Nia was waiting in the living room.
She stood as soon as she saw Brielle.
For a moment, mother and daughter stared at each other.
Then Nia rushed forward.
"Are you okay?""
Brielle started crying.
"I'm sorry, Mom.""
Nia wrapped her arms around her.
I watched them embrace.
It was the first genuine moment of tenderness I had witnessed between them in months.
Then Nia noticed the folder.
Her expression changed.
"Where did you get that?""
"Vanessa's car," Brielle whispered.
Nia pulled back.
"Did you read it?""
"Some of it.""
Nia looked at me.
"What did you find?""
I placed the folder on the coffee table.
"Enough to know Vanessa and Caleb have been working together.""
Nia closed her eyes.
Then I showed her the message.
Her lips parted.
"She sent that to you?""
"Yes.""
I held up the handwritten note.
"Is this yours?""
Nia nodded.
I looked at her.
"Tell me what happened the night Ethan died.""
She sat down slowly.
Brielle lowered herself onto the opposite sofa.
Nia looked at her daughter.
"I never wanted you to know this.""
Brielle wiped her cheeks.
"I think I deserve to know.""
Nia nodded.
Then she began.
"Your father called me from the hospital at eleven forty that night. He said he needed to speak to me privately. He sounded frightened.""
"Why?"" Brielle asked.
"He said he had discovered that Caleb had been taking money from your trust.""
Brielle covered her mouth.
"He told me he had evidence. He wanted me to collect a package from his hospital room.""
I leaned forward.
"What was in the package?""
"Documents. Bank statements. A letter explaining everything.""
"Did you get it?""
Nia shook her head.
"No.""
"Why?""
Her eyes filled with tears.
"Because when I arrived, Vanessa was already there.""
I felt my stomach tighten.
"What happened?""
"She told me Ethan was sleeping. She said I should leave because the doctors had asked him to rest.""
"Did you see him?""
"Through the doorway. He was awake.""
Brielle began crying again.
"Why didn't you go in?""
Nia looked at her daughter.
"Because Vanessa told me Caleb had threatened to report me for interfering with the trust. She said if I caused trouble, Brielle would lose everything.""
I felt anger rising.
"So you left?""
Nia nodded.
"Yes.""
The room became painfully quiet.
"I thought I was protecting you," she whispered to Brielle.
"I thought I could come back in the morning.""
"Did Dad die that night?""
Nia nodded.
Brielle covered her face.
"Did he ask for you?""
Nia's tears finally spilled.
"Yes.""
I looked down at the note.
*I was the last person to speak to him before he died.*
It was technically true.
But it wasn't the whole truth.
"Who was with him when he died?"" I asked.
Nia stared at the floor.
"Vanessa.""
Then my phone vibrated.
A new email had arrived from Daniel Whitmore.
The subject line read:
*URGENT: ORIGINAL HOSPITAL RECORDS RECOVERED.*
I opened the attachment.
There was a scanned hospital incident report.
The final paragraph contained a statement from a nurse.
At approximately 12:18 a.m., patient requested that his daughter be contacted. Staff member Vanessa Reed stated that the family had already been informed and requested no further calls be made.
I read the sentence again.
Then I looked at Brielle.
"Your father asked for you.""
She began sobbing.
And beneath the report was another document.
A formal complaint filed by a hospital employee seven years earlier.
The complaint named Vanessa Reed.
But it also contained another name.
*Dr. Samuel Carter.*
Caleb's full name.

And a handwritten note beside it.
*Unauthorized access to patient's medication records.*
