Chapter 14: The Recording That Exposed Them All

We found Elaine at a small motel outside the city.

She was sitting alone in a ground-floor room, wearing yesterday's clothes and holding a paper cup of coffee.

When she saw us, she began crying.

Nia walked inside first.

"Why did you take everything from the storage unit?""

Elaine looked at her sister.

"Because Caleb told me to.""

"You've been helping him for seven years.""

"I know.""

"You let me believe I had failed Ethan. You let me believe I had abandoned him when he needed me.""

Elaine lowered her head.

"I was ashamed.""

Nia stared at her.

"Shame doesn't explain stealing from your own niece.""

Brielle stood behind me.

"Did you take my father's letters?""

Elaine nodded.

"Yes.""

"Where are they?""

She pointed toward a suitcase beside the bed.

"Inside.""

I opened it.

There were folders, photographs, bank statements, and several sealed envelopes.

I recognized the handwriting immediately.

Ethan.

Daniel entered behind us.

"Ms. Carter, I need you to understand that these documents may be relevant to an ongoing fraud investigation.""

Elaine nodded.

"I know.""

"Then tell us everything.""

She sat on the edge of the bed.

"Caleb contacted me shortly after Ethan died. He said the family was in danger. He told me Ethan had made financial commitments that could destroy Brielle's inheritance.""

"Did you believe him?"" Nia asked.

"At first.""

"Why?""

"Because he showed me documents. He said Ethan had borrowed money from private investors and used the trust as security.""

Daniel frowned.

"Those documents were fabricated.""

Elaine looked at him.

"I know that now.""

I crossed my arms.

"When did you find out?""

"About two years ago.""

Nia stared at her.

"Two years?""

Elaine nodded.

"I discovered that Vanessa had been moving money into companies registered under different names. I confronted her. She threatened to tell the police I had stolen the original trust documents.""

"Had you?"" I asked.

Elaine looked down.

"Yes.""

Nobody spoke.

She continued.

"Caleb told me I could fix everything if I helped him transfer the house. He said the money would be returned, the trust would be restored, and nobody would lose anything.""

Brielle's voice shook.

"You knew Mom was being threatened?""

"Yes.""

"And you let it happen?""

Elaine began crying.

"I thought I could stop it.""

Brielle turned away.

I opened the suitcase and found a small digital recorder.

It was old, with a cracked plastic cover.

A label was attached.

*ETHAN — FINAL RECORDING.*

Daniel took it carefully.

"Where did you get this?""

"From the storage unit.""

"Was it inside the original box?""

Elaine nodded.

"Ethan gave it to me the day before he died. He told me to keep it safe.""

Nia looked at her sister.

"Then why didn't you give it to me?""

"Because Caleb threatened me.""

Daniel examined the device.

"We need to make a verified copy before playing this.""

I looked at him.

"How long?""

"Several minutes.""

While he worked, I noticed a photograph inside the suitcase.

It showed Ethan standing in front of a house.

Behind him was a young Brielle, smiling with a missing front tooth.

On the back, Ethan had written:

Everything I am fighting for is standing beside me.

Brielle took the photograph.

She pressed it against her chest.

"I don't remember him looking this happy.""

Nia sat beside her.

"He loved you more than anything.""

Brielle began crying.

"I spent seven years believing he left me with nothing.""

Nia wrapped her arms around her.

"He didn't.""

For a moment, the room was quiet.

Then Daniel looked up.

"The recording is ready.""

He connected the device to his laptop.

A man's voice filled the room.

Ethan.

His breathing was heavy.

But his words were clear.

"Caleb, I know about the transfers.""

Another voice answered.

Caleb.

"You're confused, Ethan.""

"Don't insult me.""

A chair scraped.

Then Ethan continued.

"I checked the accounts. You moved two hundred and forty thousand dollars from the company.""

Caleb laughed.

"I moved money to protect the business.""

"You used Brielle's name.""

"She doesn't even understand what the trust means.""

"She's my daughter.""

"Exactly. And she'll have everything when you're gone.""

Ethan's voice became louder.

"You will not touch her inheritance.""

There was a pause.

Then Caleb said something that made my skin crawl.

"You should worry about your wife before you worry about your daughter.""

Ethan went silent.

"What does that mean?""

"It means Nia has already signed the documents.""

"She doesn't know what she's signing.""

"Then perhaps you should have explained things to her earlier.""

A door opened.

Another voice entered.

Vanessa.

"Caleb, we don't have much time.""

Ethan sounded frightened.

"Get out of my room.""

Vanessa ignored him.

"The amendment is ready. We just need the second authorization.""

"You're not getting it.""

Caleb laughed.

"Then we'll use the one we already have.""

Ethan began coughing.

His voice weakened.

"You'll destroy Brielle.""

Caleb answered coldly.

"She'll never know.""

The recording ended.

Nobody moved.

Daniel replayed the final thirty seconds.

Then he stopped it.

"That is significant evidence.""

I looked at him.

"Can it prove the fraud?""

"It supports the financial records and establishes that Caleb and Vanessa discussed the unauthorized amendment.""

Brielle was staring at the laptop.

"There's more.""

She pointed to the recorder.

"Look.""

Daniel examined the device.

A second file was stored on it.

He opened it.

This recording was shorter.

Only forty-seven seconds.

A woman spoke first.

Elaine.

"I can't do this anymore. You promised me Brielle would be protected.""

Caleb answered.

"She will be.""

"You said Ethan would never know.""

"He knows nothing now.""

There was a pause.

Then Elaine whispered:

"What did you do to him?""

Caleb's voice became threatening.

"Be careful what you ask.""

The recording ended.

Nia stood.

"Elaine...""

Her sister began sobbing.

"I didn't know what he meant.""

"Did you know something was happening to Ethan?""

Elaine shook her head.

"I suspected Caleb was hiding something. I didn't know what.""

Daniel turned off the laptop.

"Both recordings will need to be authenticated. We should provide them to the investigator immediately.""

My phone vibrated.

A message from the investigator.

*We have located Vanessa Reed. She has been detained for questioning regarding the fraudulent property transfer. Caleb Carter is currently being sought.*

I showed everyone.

Brielle covered her mouth.

"Is it over?""

I looked at the message.

"Not yet.""

Because I knew Caleb.

Not personally.

But I understood the kind of man he was.

He had spent seven years manipulating his family, hiding money, and threatening anyone who challenged him.

Men like that rarely surrendered without trying one final trick.

My phone rang.

It was an unfamiliar number.

I answered.

"Hello?""

A man's voice spoke.

"Marcus. It's Caleb.""

I looked at Daniel.

"Where are you?""

"Somewhere safe.""

"What do you want?""

"I want to make an arrangement.""

"There will be no arrangement.""

He laughed.

"You're very confident for a man whose wife helped move the first seventy-four thousand dollars.""

I clenched my jaw.

"That money has nothing to do with your theft.""

"Perhaps. But the investigators won't care about the difference.""

"What do you want?""

"Bring the original recording to the old Carter warehouse tomorrow morning.""

"No.""

"Then I'll release the documents Elaine signed seven years ago.""

I looked at Nia.

Her face had gone pale.

"What documents?""

Caleb's voice became colder.

"The ones proving your wife helped me establish the company that stole her daughter's inheritance.""

I felt my stomach tighten.

"You're lying.""

"Am I?""

The call ended.

I looked at Nia.

She began shaking her head.

"Marcus, I never helped him establish anything.""

Daniel gathered the documents.

"He's attempting to intimidate you. Don't respond.""

But Brielle had noticed something.

She was staring at the photograph of Ethan.

On the back, beneath his handwriting, was a small address.

The address of the old Carter warehouse.

I looked at her.

"What's wrong?""

She whispered:

"That's where Dad kept his original business records.""

Daniel stopped moving.

May you like

Then he said:

"Mr. Carter, we need to get there before Caleb does.""
