Chapter 11: The Storage Locker Contained a Second Family

Richard called the police.

Graham searched the garden.

I stayed in the study with Lily, trying to understand how my entire family had become a collection of lies.

My mother had disappeared.

My father was alive.

Vanessa was somewhere outside, possibly preparing to leave the country.

And Daniel's final recording was supposedly hidden in a storage locker.

At 2:15 a.m., Richard returned.

"She's gone.""

I stood.

"Did she take anything?""

"Her handbag and car keys.""

"Where would she go?""

My father answered from the chair where he had been instructed to remain.

"She'll go to the railway station.""

Richard turned toward him.

"Why?""

"Because she knows about the locker.""

I looked at the silver key.

"What's inside?""

My father hesitated.

"Evidence.""

"Evidence of what?""

He rubbed his forehead.

"Everything.""

I felt anger rise again.

"You expect me to believe that after seven years of lying?""

"No. I expect you to verify it.""

Richard looked at his watch.

"We should go now.""

He called the officers handling the investigation and explained the situation. Two agreed to accompany us.

Graham insisted on coming.

Lily stayed with Richard's housekeeper.

Before leaving, she hugged me.

"Mom?""

"Yes?""

"Will you find Daddy's video?""

I kissed her forehead.

"I promise I'll try.""

The old railway station had been abandoned for nearly a decade.

Its windows were covered with plywood, and weeds had grown through cracks in the concrete.

My father directed us toward a row of metal storage units behind the main building.

"Number 19," he said.

Richard inserted the key.

The lock clicked.

Inside were three cardboard boxes, a filing cabinet, and a black suitcase.

I opened the first box.

It contained photographs.

My father standing beside Vanessa.

My mother signing documents.

And several photographs of Daniel taken without his knowledge.

I picked one up.

Daniel was sitting outside a restaurant, holding his phone.

On the back was a date.

The day before his death.

"Why were you following him?""

My father looked uncomfortable.

"Because I knew he was investigating me.""

Graham opened the filing cabinet.

"Look at these.""

Inside were bank statements showing transfers between several companies.

Richard examined them.

"These are connected to the shell company Vanessa used.""

He turned another page.

Then stopped.

"Thomas, what is this?""

My father didn't answer.

Richard held up a document.

It was a birth certificate.

The mother's name was Vanessa Carter.

The father's name was Thomas Carter.

My father.

I stared at the paper.

"What?""

Graham looked between us.

"Is that...?""

My father closed his eyes.

"Vanessa is my daughter.""

The words seemed to echo inside the storage unit.

I laughed once.

It was an involuntary, broken sound.

"No.""

My father looked at me.

"Claire—"

"No. You're telling me Vanessa is my half-sister?""

He nodded.

My hands began shaking.

"All these years?""

"Your mother knew.""

I turned toward the empty space beside the cabinet.

My mother had known.

Of course she had.

The affair.

The fake death.

The secret daughter.

The stolen money.

Every terrible thing seemed to connect to another terrible thing.

"Did you leave us because of her?""

My father shook his head.

"I left because I was being investigated for financial fraud. I thought disappearing would protect everyone.""

"You let us believe you died!""

"It was complicated.""

"Was it complicated for you when I stood beside an empty coffin? Was it complicated when Mom told me I would never see you again?""

He lowered his eyes.

I continued.

"And Daniel? Was he supposed to disappear too?""

My father didn't answer.

Richard opened the black suitcase.

Inside was an old laptop, a small recording device, and several sealed envelopes.

He turned on the laptop.

It required no password.

A folder appeared on the desktop.

*DANIEL — OCTOBER 14.*

Richard clicked it.

A video opened.

The screen showed Daniel sitting in his car.

His face was tired, but his voice was clear.

"If you're watching this, I wasn't able to finish what I started.""

I covered my mouth.

Daniel continued.

"Claire, I love you. I'm sorry I didn't tell you everything sooner.""

He looked down at something outside the camera's view.

"Your sister has been stealing from you. Your mother knows. And Thomas has been helping her.""

My father looked away.

Daniel continued.

"But there's another reason I need you to know the truth. Vanessa isn't acting alone. Someone else has been giving her access to information about your accounts.""

I leaned closer.

Daniel took a breath.

"I found a second set of financial records. The original transactions were authorized by someone who had access to both your mother's and your father's identities.""

Richard paused the video.

"That's significant.""

"Keep playing," I said.

Daniel looked directly into the camera again.

"If anything happens to me, look at the company registered under the name Evelyn Carter.""

I frowned.

"Evelyn?""

Graham searched the laptop.

A folder appeared containing corporate documents.

Richard opened the first one.

The company was registered five years earlier.

The listed director was Evelyn Carter.

I stared at the name.

My grandmother.

She had died twelve years ago.

Richard examined the registration date.

"Someone used her identity after her death.""

My father suddenly stood.

"We need to leave.""

Richard turned.

"Why?""

"Because this isn't the only copy.""

Graham looked at him.

"What do you mean?""

My father pointed toward the laptop.

"That recording was only one part of Daniel's investigation. The original files are somewhere else.""

"Where?""

My father hesitated.

Then he looked at me.

"Your grandmother's house.""

I shook my head.

"She died twelve years ago.""

"Yes. But she owned a property that nobody knows about.""

Richard's phone rang.

He answered.

Listened.

Then his expression changed.

"What?""

He turned toward us.

"The police found Margaret.""

"Where?""

"At the hospital.""

My stomach tightened.

"Is she hurt?""

Richard hesitated.

"She's conscious. But she asked to speak to you.""

I grabbed my bag.

"Why?""

Richard looked at the laptop screen.

"Because she says she knows who was driving the car when Daniel died.""

My father went completely pale.

He whispered:

"That's impossible.""

Richard turned toward him.

"Why?""

My father stared at the photograph of Daniel.

"Because I was driving.""

Nobody moved.

May you like

Then he added something that made the entire investigation change direction.

"But Vanessa was in the passenger seat.""
