Chapter 12: The Hospital Confession

The hospital corridor smelled of antiseptic and burnt coffee.

My mother was lying in a private room with a bandage around her forehead.

A nurse told us she had been found unconscious beside her car near the old railway station.

She had suffered a fall but was expected to recover.

When I entered the room, she immediately began crying.

"Claire.""

I stood beside the bed.

"What happened?""

She looked toward Richard.

"Can we speak alone?""

"No.""

She swallowed.

"Please.""

I folded my arms.

"You've had seven years to speak honestly. I'm done protecting your secrets.""

My mother looked down.

Then she noticed the photograph I was holding.

The one showing my father beside Daniel's wrecked car.

Her face changed.

"Did you find Thomas?""

"Yes.""

She closed her eyes.

"Then he told you.""

"He told us Vanessa is his daughter.""

My mother began crying.

"I never wanted you to find out this way.""

I felt anger rise.

"How exactly did you expect me to find out? At another wedding?""

She flinched.

Richard pulled a chair closer.

"Margaret, we need the truth about October 14.""

My mother nodded slowly.

"Thomas called me that night.""

"What time?"" Richard asked.

"Just after ten.""

"What did he say?""

"He said Daniel had found the original insurance documents and was going to confront Vanessa.""

I stared at her.

"Why was my father involved?""

"Because he had helped Vanessa set up the company that received the stolen money.""

"And you?""

She looked at me.

"I signed some documents. I didn't understand everything.""

"Stop saying that.""

My voice shook.

"You understood enough to take money from your granddaughter.""

My mother began crying harder.

Richard leaned forward.

"Who was driving Daniel's car?""

My mother looked toward the window.

Then she whispered:

"Thomas.""

I felt the room spin.

"Then why did Vanessa say she grabbed the steering wheel?""

My mother swallowed.

"Because she did.""

Richard's expression tightened.

"Explain.""

My mother closed her eyes.

"Thomas was driving. Daniel was in the passenger seat. Vanessa was behind them.""

I stared at her.

"Why was Daniel in the car with both of them?""

"Thomas told him he had the original documents. He promised to return everything and explain how the transfers had happened.""

"And you knew about this meeting?""

She nodded.

"Thomas called me. He said he needed someone to make sure Daniel didn't go to the police.""

I stepped backward.

"What did you do?""

"I called Vanessa.""

My blood ran cold.

"What did you tell her?""

"To get the documents before Daniel could hand them over.""

Richard interrupted.

"Did you know Thomas would be driving?""

"Yes.""

"Did you know Vanessa was going to confront Daniel?""

"Yes.""

"Did you know there was a possibility of violence?""

My mother covered her face.

"I thought they would argue. I didn't know...""

She stopped.

I stared at her.

"You keep saying you didn't know.""

My mother looked up.

"Claire, please.""

"Did you know Thomas was planning to make Daniel look responsible for the accident?""

She began shaking.

Richard went completely still.

"Margaret, what did you just say?""

My mother looked at him.

"Thomas said if something happened, the police would think Daniel had been driving.""

I couldn't breathe.

"How?""

She looked down.

"Because he had arranged for Daniel's wallet and identification to be placed in the driver's seat after the crash.""

Richard stood.

"You're saying the accident scene was deliberately altered?""

My mother nodded.

I pressed my hand against my mouth.

Daniel had been the victim of a terrible collision.

But someone had tried to make him look responsible for his own death.

And my father had been involved.

Richard called the investigating officers immediately.

They requested that my mother make a formal statement.

She agreed.

For the first time, she seemed willing to stop protecting everyone else.

But I still needed one answer.

"Why did you tell me Daniel's death was unavoidable?""

My mother began crying.

"Because Thomas threatened me.""

"What did he threaten?""

"He said if I told you the truth, he would make sure you lost Lily.""

I felt sick.

"How?""

"He said he had documents showing you were financially irresponsible. He said he could convince a court you weren't capable of raising her.""

I stared at her.

"So you let me believe my husband was responsible for his own accident?""

She nodded.

"And you let Vanessa steal from us?""

Another nod.

I turned away.

My mother reached for my hand.

"Claire, I know I've failed you.""

I looked at her.

"You didn't just fail me. You failed Lily.""

She began sobbing.

I left the room.

Graham was waiting in the hallway.

He had spent the last hour speaking with Richard's legal team.

When he saw my face, he stood.

"What did she say?""

I told him.

He listened without interrupting.

Then he quietly said, "I think Vanessa knew more than she admitted.""

I looked at him.

"Why?""

He showed me a message from Brooke.

*I need to talk to Graham. Vanessa has been lying about the accident. She wasn't just a passenger.*

A second message appeared.

*She was the one who told Thomas to speed up because Daniel was reaching for the phone.*

My stomach tightened.

"She told Thomas to speed up?""

Graham nodded.

"Brooke says she heard Vanessa admit it.""

I closed my eyes.

Then I noticed something else.

A photograph attached to the message.

It showed Vanessa standing outside a convenience store on the night Daniel died.

She was wearing the same white coat.

Beside her was Brooke.

I looked at the timestamp.

10:58 p.m.

The accident report stated that the emergency call had been made at 10:46 p.m.

But Vanessa was standing calmly outside a store twelve minutes later.

"Where was this taken?""

Graham checked the message.

"Three miles from the crash site.""

I stared at the photograph.

"Why would she be there?""

Graham enlarged it.

Behind Vanessa was a black SUV.

The license plate was visible.

Richard approached us.

"What's happened?""

I showed him the photograph.

He examined it carefully.

Then he looked toward the hospital room.

"That vehicle belongs to Thomas.""

I felt cold.

"Was he following Vanessa?""

Richard shook his head.

"No. Look at the driver's window.""

We enlarged the photograph.

A silhouette was visible behind the steering wheel.

But it wasn't my father.

It was someone else.

A woman.

And when I recognized her face, I nearly dropped the phone.

It was Brooke.

The maid of honor.

The woman who had stood at Vanessa's wedding and claimed she knew nothing.

Richard immediately called the police.

"Tell them to locate Brooke. Now.""

Graham stepped backward.

"Why would she be in Thomas's vehicle?""

I looked at the photograph again.

Then another message arrived.

This time, it was from Brooke herself.

*I'm sorry. I should have told you sooner.*

A second message followed.

*Vanessa didn't grab the steering wheel. She was driving when Daniel's car left the road. Thomas switched seats with her afterward.*

I stared at the words.

My father had been lying.

My mother had been lying.

Vanessa had been lying.

And now the woman who had helped arrange the wedding was telling us that the person responsible for Daniel's death had been sitting behind the wheel all along.

Richard took my phone.

"Claire, we need to get this to the police.""

Before he could move, another message appeared.

*But there's something worse. Daniel wasn't supposed to die that night. The original plan was to make him disappear.*

I looked at Graham.

Then at the hospital room where my mother was still lying.

I finally understood why Vanessa had been so desperate to destroy the original recording.

It didn't just expose financial crimes.

It revealed a plan.

And somewhere inside that recording was the truth about what had really happened to my husband.

Richard's phone rang.

He answered.

Listened.

Then slowly lowered it.

"The police have located Brooke.""

"Where is she?""

Richard looked at me.

"At the airport.""

My heart sank.

"Has she left?""

He shook his head.

"Not yet.""

He paused.

"She's asking for protection.""

May you like

Then he added:

"She says she has the original recording, and she wants to make a deal before Vanessa finds her.""
