Chapter 3: The Man Who Had Been Waiting for the Wedding
Richard Mitchell didn't look like a man attending a celebration.
His tie was loosened, his expression grim, and his right hand held a brown envelope so tightly that the paper had begun to bend.
Graham stared at him.
"Dad?""
Richard walked into the ballroom.
"Son, I'm sorry.""
Graham looked from his father to Vanessa.
"What's going on?""
Richard stopped beside the stage.
"Something I should have told you before today.""
Vanessa immediately stepped forward.
"Richard, this is a family matter.""
He turned toward her.
"No, Vanessa. You made it a family matter when you stole from one of our guests.""
Her mouth opened.
"That's ridiculous.""
Richard placed the envelope on the table beside the DJ.
"I'd like everyone to listen.""
Graham rubbed his forehead.
"Please tell me what this is about.""
Richard took out several documents.
"Three weeks ago, our accounting department flagged suspicious transfers involving the investment company you asked me to review.""
Vanessa's face changed.
Richard continued.
"The company was registered under a business address belonging to someone named Vanessa Carter.""
"That's my name!"" she snapped.
"Yes. And the company had no employees, no office, and no verifiable business operations.""
Graham stared at her.
"Vanessa?""
She folded her arms.
"I was building something. You knew that.""
"You told me it was a consulting business," Graham said.
"It is!""
Richard shook his head.
"Your company submitted invoices to Graham's investment firm for services that were never provided.""
Vanessa laughed nervously.
"This is a misunderstanding.""
Richard opened the envelope.
"Then perhaps you can explain these.""
He placed three printed invoices on the table.
Each carried the same company name.
Each had been approved using a digital authorization connected to Graham's account.
Graham examined them.
"I never approved these.""
Richard nodded.
"We know. The signature was digitally copied from an earlier authorization.""
Vanessa looked toward the guests.
"You're making accusations without understanding the situation.""
Richard's voice hardened.
"I understand enough to know that nearly $120,000 was transferred to that company over six months.""
Graham went completely still.
"One hundred and twenty thousand?""
Richard nodded.
"That's only what we've identified so far.""
Vanessa's eyes filled.
"Richard, please. You know I love Graham.""
Richard looked at her.
"Then why did you ask my accountant how quickly you could liquidate his assets after the wedding?""
The silence was immediate.
Graham turned slowly.
"You did what?""
Vanessa shook her head.
"That isn't true.""
Richard removed another sheet.
"It was an email sent from your personal account.""
"Someone hacked me!""
"Then someone hacked you using your own phone, from your own apartment, while you were discussing the transaction with your assistant.""
Brooke lowered her head.
Vanessa turned toward her.
"Don't you dare.""
Brooke took a step backward.
"I told you this would happen.""
"You told me you had deleted everything!""
"I thought I had!""
Richard looked at Graham.
"I didn't want to interrupt your wedding without evidence. I hired an independent forensic accountant. The report arrived this afternoon.""
Graham's face hardened.
"And you waited until tonight?""
"I wanted to be certain.""
Richard looked toward Lily.
Then his expression softened.
"But after seeing what happened to that little girl, I think we have all waited long enough.""
I was still trying to understand the financial documents.
"Richard," I said, "what does this have to do with my husband?""
He looked at me carefully.
"Claire, may I ask you something?""
I nodded.
"Did Vanessa ever offer to help you manage Daniel's estate?""
My throat tightened.
"Yes.""
"Did she ask you to sign documents?""
"Several. She said they were necessary for the insurance settlement.""
Richard exchanged a glance with Graham.
"Do you still have copies?""
"Somewhere at home.""
"Good. Because we found a company connected to those transfers that received money from an account associated with Daniel's estate.""
My stomach dropped.
"How much?""
Richard looked down at the report.
"Forty-eight thousand dollars.""
The exact amount from the document Lily had shown Graham.
I gripped the edge of the table.
"She told me there were legal fees.""
Richard shook his head.
"That money wasn't paid to a law firm.""
Vanessa suddenly shouted.
"Enough!""
She grabbed the documents and threw them onto the floor.
"You people have no idea what I've sacrificed!""
Graham stared at her.
"What have you sacrificed?""
"My entire life! I've spent years being judged by people who think they're better than me!""
She pointed at me.
"Especially her!""
I didn't move.
Vanessa's voice grew louder.
"Claire always gets sympathy. Poor Claire, the widow. Poor Claire, raising a child alone. Everyone rushes to help her!""
"Vanessa," I said, "you stole from my daughter.""
She laughed bitterly.
"Your daughter has everything handed to her! You act like she's some helpless angel!""
Graham stepped between us.
"Stop.""
But Vanessa wasn't finished.
"Do you know what it's like to spend your whole life competing with someone who doesn't even try?""
I stared at her.
"We were sisters.""
"No!"" she screamed.
"You were always the favorite!""
The words hung in the air.
For a moment, I saw the little girl she had once been.
The sister who used to steal my sweaters, who cried when I went away to college, who slept beside me during thunderstorms.
Then I looked at Lily.
Her small hands were wrapped around the microphone stand.
And I remembered Vanessa laughing while my daughter lay on the marble.
There was no excuse left to find.
Graham removed his wedding ring.
He placed it on the table.
Vanessa stared at it.
"What are you doing?""
"I'm not going home with you tonight.""
She laughed in disbelief.
"You can't be serious.""
"I've never been more serious.""
"You married me!""
"And apparently I married someone I don't know.""
Vanessa reached for his hand.
"Baby, please. We can fix this.""
Graham stepped away.
"Don't call me that.""
She turned toward the guests.
"Somebody needs to explain that this is my wedding!""
Nobody moved.
Then Lily tugged gently at my sleeve.
"Mom?""
I knelt beside her.
"Yes, sweetheart?""
"Can we go home now?""
I brushed a strand of hair away from her face.
"Of course.""
But before I could stand, Richard spoke again.
"Claire, please wait.""
I turned.
He was holding another document.
"This is important.""
He handed it to me.
At the top was the name of a financial institution.
Below it was a transaction dated two months after Daniel's death.
The amount was $48,000.
And beneath the transfer details was a handwritten authorization.
My signature.
I stared at it.
"I didn't sign this.""
Richard nodded.
"That's what our investigators believe.""
He pointed to a small line at the bottom.
"Look at the witness.""
I lowered my eyes.
The name was familiar.
Painfully familiar.
It belonged to someone who had attended Daniel's funeral, held my hand while I cried, and promised to protect Lily if anything ever happened to me.
My mother.
Margaret Carter.
I looked up at Richard.
"Why would my mother be listed as a witness?""
Richard hesitated.
Then he opened the final page of the report.
"Because, Claire, the person who authorized the transfer wasn't Vanessa alone.""
He turned the page toward me.
There were two signatures.
One was Vanessa's.
The other belonged to our mother.
And beneath them was a note from the investigator:
*The original account holder may not have been the intended beneficiary.*
My fingers went numb.
Because suddenly I understood that the wedding video wasn't the beginning of the story.
It was only the first piece of a much bigger betrayal.
And my daughter had apparently found something that even the investigators hadn't discovered yet.
I looked at Lily.
She reached into her little lavender dress one final time.
This time, she pulled out a folded photograph.
It showed my mother standing beside Vanessa outside a bank.
May you like
On the back, in my daughter's careful handwriting, were seven words:
*Mom, Grandma knows what happened to Dad.*
