Chapter 2: The Video Nobody Was Supposed to See
The champagne glass shattered.
Nobody seemed to notice.
Every eye in the ballroom was fixed on the enormous screen.
Graham stared at the filename.
Then he looked at Vanessa.
"What is this?""
Vanessa grabbed his arm.
"Nothing. It's some stupid prank.""
"Then why are you shaking?""
"I'm not shaking!""
Her voice cracked across the ballroom.
The DJ looked between them.
"Should I play it?""
Graham didn't hesitate.
"Yes.""
Vanessa lunged toward the equipment table.
"Turn it off!""
One of the wedding coordinators stepped between her and the DJ.
"Ma'am, please.""
"Get out of my way!""
I stood near the dance floor, unable to understand what was happening.
Lily was beside the DJ now, looking very small beneath the enormous screen.
I rushed toward her.
"Sweetheart, where did you get that?""
She didn't answer.
Instead, she reached for my hand.
"Just watch, Mom.""
The screen went black.
A timestamp appeared in the corner.
*OCTOBER 14 — 10:32 P.M.*
Then a familiar voice filled the ballroom.
Vanessa's voice.
"She's finally gone. I thought she'd never leave.""
A woman's voice answered.
"Are you sure she didn't see anything?""
Vanessa laughed.
"Claire? Please. My sister wouldn't recognize a warning sign if it slapped her in the face.""
The ballroom went completely silent.
I stopped breathing.
The video showed a luxury office with a glass desk, cream-colored furniture, and a framed photograph of Vanessa and Graham.
I recognized it immediately.
It was Graham's home office.
The camera angle was strange, slightly tilted, as if someone had placed a phone behind a stack of books.
On screen, Vanessa entered carrying a folder.
She dropped it onto the desk.
"Everything is almost finished," she said.
The other woman stepped into view.
It was Vanessa's maid of honor, Brooke.
Brooke poured herself a drink.
"And the money?""
Vanessa opened the folder.
"Once Graham signs the final documents, the property transfers are automatic. The investment accounts will be accessible, and I'll have enough to clear everything.""
Brooke frowned.
"What about the prenup?""
Vanessa smiled.
"He's already agreed to the revised version.""
"Does he know about the debts?""
"Of course not.""
I felt the blood drain from my face.
Graham took one step toward the screen.
"What debts?""
Vanessa turned toward him.
"Darling, don't listen to this.""
But the recording continued.
Brooke leaned against the desk.
"And what happens if he finds out about Daniel's insurance money?""
I went cold.
Daniel.
My husband.
Vanessa's smile widened.
"Claire's little settlement? That's the easiest part. She still thinks I was helping her manage the paperwork.""
My knees almost gave way.
"What?"" I whispered.
Graham turned toward me.
"Claire?""
I couldn't answer.
On the screen, Brooke asked another question.
"Did you really move the money?""
Vanessa took a sip of wine.
"Not all of it. Just enough to make the first payment on the apartment. Claire never checks her statements.""
Brooke laughed.
"You're unbelievable.""
Vanessa shrugged.
"She's always been stupid about money.""
The video continued.
Then came the sentence that made me feel as though the floor had disappeared beneath me.
"And if Claire ever finds out, I'll tell her she signed everything herself. She's a grieving widow. Who do you think people will believe?""
Graham slowly turned toward Vanessa.
"Tell me she's lying.""
Vanessa's eyes filled with tears.
"That conversation is being taken out of context.""
"Did you steal from Claire?""
"No!""
"Did you move money from her account?""
"She gave me permission!""
I finally found my voice.
"I never gave you permission.""
Vanessa spun around.
"Shut up, Claire!""
Several guests gasped.
Graham stared at her.
"Don't speak to her like that.""
Vanessa threw her hands into the air.
"You're all being manipulated by a little girl with a flash drive!""
Lily looked up at her.
"I'm not lying.""
The words were quiet.
But they carried across the ballroom.
Graham crouched beside her.
"Sweetheart, can you tell me where you got this?""
Lily nodded.
"From Aunt Vanessa's office.""
Vanessa laughed sharply.
"She was never in my office!""
Lily reached into her pocket again.
This time, she pulled out a folded piece of paper.
"I found it in the drawer.""
Graham took the paper.
It was a printed bank transfer confirmation.
My name appeared at the top.
So did an account number I recognized.
The amount was $48,000.
The recipient was a company I had never heard of.
Graham looked at Vanessa.
"Explain this.""
She stared at the paper.
For the first time since I had known her, she looked genuinely frightened.
"That's not what it looks like.""
"Then tell me what it looks like.""
She glanced toward Brooke.
Brooke had already stepped away from her.
"Don't look at me," Brooke muttered.
Vanessa's face twisted.
"You promised me!""
Brooke shook her head.
"I didn't promise anything.""
The guests began whispering.
Graham stood and walked toward the DJ booth.
"Keep playing.""
Vanessa grabbed his sleeve.
"Please, Graham. We can discuss this privately.""
He removed her hand.
"We're already discussing it.""
The next video began.
It showed Vanessa sitting alone in the same office, talking on the phone.
Her voice was clearer this time.
"Yes, I need the transfer completed before Friday. No, Claire won't notice. She's too busy pretending to be a perfect mother.""
A pause.
Then she laughed.
"And if she does, I'll tell her it was part of the estate settlement.""
I felt sick.
Daniel had left Lily and me enough money to start over. I had trusted Vanessa to help me organize some paperwork because she claimed she knew a financial adviser.
For months, I had wondered why the account balance seemed lower than expected.
She had told me there were taxes, fees, and unexpected expenses.
I had believed her.
I had believed my own sister.
Graham's voice cut through the ballroom.
"How much?""
Vanessa shook her head.
"What?""
"How much money did you take from Claire?""
She looked around desperately.
"You're my husband now. Whatever happened before tonight is between sisters.""
Graham stared at her.
"We've been married for less than twelve hours.""
Vanessa's mouth fell open.
He looked toward the guests.
"I want everyone to understand something. I did not know about this.""
A man near the front raised his phone.
Another guest began recording.
Vanessa noticed.
"Put those phones away!""
Nobody moved.
Then the screen went black again.
A new file appeared.
*VIDEO 2 — THE WEDDING DAY.*
Vanessa stared at it.
Her lips parted.
"No.""
The DJ clicked the file.
The video showed the marble terrace.
The white rose arch.
The wedding guests.
And then Vanessa, standing over Lily.
The camera captured everything.
Her hand pushing my daughter.
Lily falling.
Vanessa looking down and laughing.
Then came her voice.
"She came alone. No husband, no money, just a useless little girl clinging to her mother.""
The room went silent.
I heard Lily take a shaky breath.
Graham looked at Vanessa as though he were seeing a stranger.
"You pushed her.""
Vanessa shook her head violently.
"She was in my way!""
"She's eight years old!""
"She ruined my photographs!""
Graham stepped back.
And then he said something that made the entire ballroom freeze.
"Vanessa, I need you to tell me one thing.""
She stared at him.
"What?""
"Did you marry me because you love me...""
He glanced at the first video still paused on the screen.
"...or because you needed access to my accounts too?""
Vanessa didn't answer.
But someone behind us did.
A man's voice.
"That's not even the worst thing she's done.""
Everyone turned toward the entrance.
An older man in a dark suit stood beneath the doorway.
Graham's father.
May you like
Richard Mitchell.
And he was holding a thick brown envelope.
