Chapter 14: My Daughter Was Holding the Evidence That Could Destroy Them

I couldn't hear anything for several seconds.

The airport seemed to disappear.

All I could see was Lily's frightened face on my phone.

"Mom, I'm okay.""

Her voice was small.

Vanessa appeared beside her.

"Don't worry, Claire. She's perfectly safe.""

I felt rage rise so violently that my hands shook.

"Where are you?""

Vanessa smiled.

"Somewhere private.""

"Let Lily go.""

"Not until we finish our conversation.""

Richard immediately took my phone.

"Vanessa, this is Richard Mitchell. You need to understand that law enforcement is now involved.""

She laughed.

"Richard, please. This has nothing to do with you.""

"You're holding a child without her mother's consent.""

"She's my niece.""

"She's eight years old.""

Vanessa's smile disappeared.

"Then perhaps you should have taken better care of her.""

The call ended.

I turned toward the officers.

"Find her.""

One officer nodded.

"We're tracing the video source.""

Graham looked furious.

"I'm going to kill her.""

Richard grabbed his shoulder.

"That won't help Lily.""

I took a deep breath.

"Brooke, where would Vanessa go?""

Brooke looked at the photograph of the warehouse.

Then she shook her head.

"Not there.""

"Why?""

"Because Thomas has another property. A cottage outside town. Vanessa used it when she wanted to meet people privately.""

Richard immediately called the police.

Within minutes, they had an address.

The drive felt endless.

I sat in the back of Richard's car, staring at the video.

Lily had looked directly into the camera before it ended.

She hadn't cried.

She hadn't screamed.

She had simply said, "Mom, remember what I told you.""

I replayed it.

Then I noticed something.

Her left hand was resting against her coat pocket.

Something small was visible between her fingers.

The silver recording device.

My daughter had taken it with her.

Even after everything that had happened, she was still protecting the evidence.

I pressed my hand against my mouth.

"Please be safe, baby.""

Richard glanced at me.

"She will be.""

I wanted to believe him.

The cottage stood at the end of a narrow gravel road.

Two police vehicles were already parked near the entrance.

The officers approached the building carefully.

Richard stayed with me while Graham spoke to the lead investigator.

Then we heard a child's voice.

"Mom!""

I ran.

An officer opened the front door.

Lily rushed into my arms.

I dropped to my knees and held her so tightly she could barely breathe.

"Baby! Are you hurt?""

She shook her head.

"No.""

I checked her face, her hands, her arms.

"Did they touch you?""

"No, Mom.""

I kissed her forehead repeatedly.

"Thank God.""

Lily pulled something from her pocket.

The silver recording device.

"I kept it.""

I held her face between my hands.

"You don't have to protect things for me, sweetheart. Your safety comes first.""

She nodded.

"I know.""

Then she whispered:

"But Daddy wanted you to hear it.""

I closed my eyes.

Behind us, officers escorted Vanessa out of the cottage.

She was shouting.

"This is ridiculous! She's my niece!""

My father followed.

His expression was cold.

"Claire, listen to me. We can still fix this.""

I stood with Lily in my arms.

"You don't get to fix anything.""

He looked at the device.

"Give me that.""

I stepped backward.

"No.""

His voice hardened.

"That recording is private property.""

Richard approached.

"Thomas, I suggest you stop speaking.""

My father ignored him.

"Claire, you don't understand what is on there.""

I looked at him.

"Then why are you so afraid of it?""

He had no answer.

The police took the recording device to be examined.

Within an hour, we were sitting in a secure interview room at the station.

Lily had fallen asleep against my shoulder.

Graham sat across from us.

Richard stood near the door, speaking with the investigator.

Then the audio technician entered.

"We've recovered the recording.""

My heartbeat quickened.

"Can we hear it?""

The investigator nodded.

He connected a laptop to the room's speaker.

A man's voice filled the room.

Thomas.

"Daniel, sign the papers. Nobody needs to get hurt.""

Daniel answered.

"I'm not signing anything.""

Vanessa's voice followed.

"You don't have to make this difficult.""

Daniel laughed bitterly.

"You stole from my wife. You tried to steal from my daughter. And now you want me to sign a confession?""

Thomas slammed something onto a table.

"You're going to destroy this family.""

Daniel's voice became louder.

"You destroyed it when you decided my little girl was worth less than your money.""

I started crying.

Graham reached across the table and held my hand.

The recording continued.

Vanessa spoke again.

"Claire doesn't need to know everything.""

Daniel answered immediately.

"She deserves to know the truth.""

Then came a sentence that made my blood run cold.

Thomas said:

"Your wife will never believe you if we tell her what really happened.""

Daniel responded:

"She knows me. That's more than I can say for either of you.""

There was a struggle.

A chair scraped.

Someone shouted.

Then the recording captured Vanessa saying:

"Give me the phone!""

Daniel shouted back:

"Get away from me!""

A loud crash followed.

The recording ended.

I stared at the laptop.

"Is that everything?""

The technician shook his head.

"No. There's another file.""

He opened it.

The screen displayed a short audio recording dated the following morning.

Thomas's voice appeared again.

"Did you move the documents?""

Vanessa answered.

"Yes.""

"And the girl?""

A pause.

"Claire's daughter?""

"Yes.""

Vanessa laughed.

"She's eight. She doesn't understand anything.""

Thomas lowered his voice.

"Don't underestimate her. Daniel taught her to remember details.""

I felt a chill.

Then Vanessa said something that changed everything.

"Don't worry. If Claire ever gets close to the truth, we'll use the one thing she can never fight.""

"What?""

"Her mother.""

I looked at Richard.

He was already standing.

The investigator paused the recording.

"There's more.""

He opened a transcript.

A financial transfer had been discussed.

A transfer worth $1.2 million.

The beneficiary was supposed to be Lily.

But the money had been redirected into a trust.

The trustee was Margaret Carter.

My mother.

I stared at the screen.

"Why would she do that?""

The investigator looked at me.

"Because your mother wasn't just a witness to the fraud. She was the person controlling the money after Daniel died.""

I felt sick.

Richard shook his head.

"How much is still in the trust?""

The investigator checked the report.

"According to the preliminary records, almost all of it.""

I blinked.

"All of it?""

"Yes. The money was never spent.""

For a moment, I couldn't understand.

My mother had stolen from us.

But she hadn't spent the money.

She had hidden it.

Then the investigator opened one final document.

It contained a signed instruction dated four years earlier.

The money was to be released to Lily on her eighteenth birthday.

But there was a handwritten condition.

*Only if Claire Carter is no longer legally responsible for the child.*

I stared at the sentence.

Graham stood.

"What does that mean?""

The investigator looked uncomfortable.

"It appears someone planned to remove you as Lily's guardian.""

I looked toward the door.

"Who signed it?""

He turned the document around.

My mother's signature was at the bottom.

But beside it was another signature.

Thomas Carter.

My father.

They hadn't simply stolen money.

They had created a plan to take my daughter away from me.

And suddenly I understood why Vanessa had humiliated Lily at the wedding.

It hadn't been an impulsive act of cruelty.

It was something much darker.

She had been trying to frighten my daughter into silence.

The investigator closed the folder.

"There's one more development.""

I looked up.

"What's happened?""

He hesitated.

"Your mother has requested to make a full statement. She says she wants to explain why she agreed to the guardianship arrangement.""

I swallowed.

"Why?""

The investigator looked directly at me.

"She claims Lily's biological father isn't Daniel.""

The room went completely silent.

I looked down at my sleeping daughter.

Then back at him.

"That's impossible.""

He placed a sealed envelope on the table.

Inside was a DNA report.

And the name listed as the alternative biological father was Thomas Carter.

My father.
