Chapter 8: The Call My Mother Never Made

"Margaret was on the phone!""

Vanessa's scream echoed through the hotel room.

I stared at her.

"What are you talking about?""

One of the officers asked her to sit down.

Vanessa ignored him.

"Your mother knew Daniel was going to confront me. She knew exactly where we were going.""

I shook my head.

"You're lying.""

Vanessa laughed through her tears.

"Ask her about the call.""

The officer stepped closer.

"Ma'am, I need you to calm down.""

Vanessa pointed at me.

"Your mother was talking to Daniel before the accident. She told him to come to the bank. She said she had something important to show him.""

I felt my knees weaken.

"Why?""

"Because she had found the original documents.""

I looked at the officers.

"Can you give us a moment?""

One officer shook his head.

"We need to continue this conversation at the station.""

Vanessa suddenly grabbed my wrist.

"Claire, listen to me. Your mother knew what was happening. She knew about the insurance policy. She knew Daniel was going to expose everything.""

I pulled away.

"Did she tell you to hurt him?""

Vanessa went silent.

For the first time that night, I saw something different in her expression.

Not anger.

Fear.

"I didn't say that.""

"But you implied it.""

She looked at the floor.

"I only said she knew.""

The officers escorted her out.

As she passed me, she leaned close.

"Ask your mother what she did with Daniel's phone.""

Then she was gone.

Richard was waiting in the hotel lobby.

He took one look at my face.

"What happened?""

I told him everything.

When I repeated Vanessa's accusation about my mother, Richard went quiet.

"Did she mention the original recording?""

"No. She mentioned Daniel's phone.""

Richard took out his own phone.

"Then we need to find it.""

Graham joined us near the entrance.

"Is Vanessa under arrest?""

"She's being questioned," Richard replied.

Graham looked at me.

"Are you okay?""

I shook my head.

"No.""

He nodded.

"Neither am I.""

We drove directly to my mother's house.

It was almost eleven when we arrived.

The living room lights were on.

My mother opened the door wearing her nightgown.

Her expression changed when she saw us.

"Claire?""

I stepped inside.

"Where's Daniel's phone?""

She looked at Richard.

Then at Graham.

"Why are you asking me that?""

"Because Vanessa says you know what happened the night Daniel died.""

My mother closed the door.

"She is lying.""

"Then tell me the truth.""

She walked toward the kitchen.

"I can't do this tonight.""

I followed her.

"You've had four years.""

She stopped.

I placed Daniel's handwritten note on the counter.

"Did he call you that night?""

My mother stared at it.

Then she nodded.

"Yes.""

"What did he say?""

"He told me he had evidence that Vanessa had changed your insurance documents.""

"And?""

"He said he was going to meet her and get her to confess.""

I gripped the counter.

"Did you tell him not to go?""

"Yes.""

"Did you call the police?""

She shook her head.

"Why?""

Her eyes filled.

"Because I thought I could fix it.""

I laughed bitterly.

"How?""

My mother sat down.

"I called Vanessa. I told her Daniel was coming.""

I stared at her.

"Why would you do that?""

"She begged me. She said Daniel was threatening her. She said he was going to ruin her life.""

"And you believed her?""

"I didn't know what else to do!""

I felt something inside me break.

"Mom, Daniel was my husband.""

She covered her face.

"I know.""

"He was Lily's father.""

"I know.""

"And you warned the person he was going to confront?""

She began crying.

"I thought they would argue. I didn't think...""

She stopped.

I leaned closer.

"What?""

My mother looked up.

"I didn't think Vanessa would take the wheel.""

The words landed like a physical blow.

I stepped away.

"You knew.""

My mother shook her head.

"I knew about the argument. I knew about the call. I didn't know she would cause the crash.""

"Did you speak to her afterward?""

"Yes.""

"When?""

"At the hospital.""

I stared at her.

"What hospital?""

"She called me from the scene. She said there had been an accident. She was frightened. She told me Daniel had died.""

I gripped the edge of the counter.

"And what did you do?""

"I told her to tell the police the truth.""

My mother wiped her eyes.

"But she said she couldn't. She said she would lose everything.""

"So you helped her hide it?""

My mother began sobbing.

"I was afraid.""

"Of what?""

"Of losing both my daughters.""

I looked at her.

"You already lost one.""

She lowered her head.

Richard quietly placed a hand on my shoulder.

Then Graham spoke.

"Mrs. Carter, do you still have Daniel's phone?""

My mother nodded.

She stood and walked toward the hallway.

We followed her into a small study.

She opened a locked drawer.

Inside was an old black phone.

My breath caught.

Daniel's phone.

The screen was cracked.

I recognized the small scratch near the charging port.

My hands trembled as I picked it up.

"Why did you keep this?""

My mother looked at me.

"Because I couldn't destroy it.""

Richard examined the device.

"Is it charged?""

"No. I removed the battery years ago.""

Graham found a charging cable in the desk drawer.

We waited.

The screen flickered.

Then it lit up.

A password prompt appeared.

I tried Daniel's birthday.

Incorrect.

I tried mine.

Incorrect.

Then Lily whispered:

"Try my birthday.""

I looked at her.

She was standing in the doorway, still wearing her pajamas.

I hadn't even realized Richard's housekeeper had brought her over.

I typed her birthday.

The phone unlocked.

My chest tightened.

Daniel had used our daughter's birthday as his password.

The home screen appeared.

There were dozens of old messages, photographs, and voice recordings.

Richard connected the phone to a computer.

"Let's see what's recoverable.""

A notification appeared.

*One unsent voice message.*

I tapped it.

Daniel's voice filled the room.

"Claire, if you hear this, I need you to know I love you. I know Vanessa has been using your information. I have proof, and I think your mother has been helping her.""

I covered my mouth.

Daniel continued.

"There's something else. I found a second insurance policy. It isn't the one Vanessa changed.

It's the original one. The beneficiary is Lily.""

I looked at Graham.

He stared at the screen.

Daniel's voice continued.

"Your mother doesn't know I found it. And I don't think Vanessa knows either.""

The recording ended.

I stared at the phone.

A second insurance policy.

One that named Lily as the beneficiary.

Richard immediately opened his briefcase.

"If this is genuine, it changes everything.""

Then another notification appeared.

An audio file.

*Recorded call — October 14, 10:41 p.m.*

The date was the night Daniel died.

I pressed play.

At first, there was static.

Then my mother's voice.

"Vanessa, where are you?""

A door slammed.

Vanessa answered.

"He's gone.""

My mother gasped.

"What do you mean, gone?""

"He stopped breathing.""

There was a long pause.

Then my mother's voice became barely audible.

"What have you done?""

Vanessa answered:

"I did what you told me to do.""

The recording stopped.

Nobody moved.

My mother sank into a chair.

Richard stared at her.

Graham looked physically ill.

And I stood holding Daniel's phone, realizing that the woman who had raised me might have been involved in something far worse than stealing money.

I turned toward her.

"What did you tell Vanessa to do?""

My mother began shaking.

May you like

Then she whispered:

"Claire, I need to show you something before you decide what happened.""
