Chapter 12: The Man Behind the Hospital Door
Richard arrived at the house that evening with a forensic audio specialist.
They sat in Marcus's study.
The two recordings were played repeatedly.
Vanessa's voice was clear.
The man's voice was less distinct, but the specialist believed it could be enhanced.
“Give me a few hours,” he said.
“I'll isolate the background noise and compare the speech patterns against any known samples you can lawfully provide.””
Marcus nodded.
“Can you identify where the recording was made?””
The specialist listened again.
“There is an air-conditioning hum, a faint electronic beep, and what sounds like a hospital announcement in the background.””
Marcus leaned forward.
“So it was recorded at the hospital?””
“Possibly. I wouldn't make a definitive conclusion yet.””
Richard wrote something down.
“We also need the original file metadata and chain of custody.””
The specialist agreed.
After he left, Marcus sat in silence.
Richard opened a folder.
“I received an update from the hospital's legal department.””
Marcus looked up.
“They found the audit trail?””
“Yes. The emergency contact information was changed using an administrator's credentials. However, the administrator says someone asked him to make the change.””
“Who?””
Richard placed a printed statement on the desk.
“The person who made the request was Vanessa.””
Marcus stared at the paper.
“Did she provide a reason?””
“She claimed you had authorized her to handle family communications while you were traveling.””
“I never did.””
“I know. The hospital has confirmed that no written authorization from you exists.””
Marcus rubbed his forehead.
“Then why did they accept her request?””
“The administrator admitted that he failed to verify the information.””
Richard continued.
“He also remembers Vanessa asking whether Elena had made any changes to her medical decision-making documents.””
Marcus's expression hardened.
“What did he tell her?””
“He refused to discuss confidential information.””
Marcus looked at the second recording.
I've already spoken to the doctor.
“Richard, could that man be Dr. Cole?””
“Possibly. But we have no evidence of that.””
Marcus shook his head.
“Dr. Cole seemed honest.””
“Then we should verify his involvement rather than assume.””
The following morning, Richard arranged a formal interview with the hospital administrator.
Marcus attended.
The man, named Peter Lawson, looked nervous when they entered the conference room.
He was in his forties and wore a gray suit.
Richard placed the hospital record on the table.
“Mr. Lawson, do you recognize this entry?””
Peter nodded.
“Yes.””
“Did you change the emergency contact information for Elena Hayes?””
“I did.””
“Who requested it?””
Peter hesitated.
“Mrs. Vanessa Reed.””
“Did you verify her authority?””
“I believed she had permission.””
“From whom?””
“From Mr. Hayes, I was told.””
Marcus leaned forward.
“I never gave her that permission.””
Peter looked uncomfortable.
“I understand that now.””
Richard asked another question.
“Did Mrs. Reed discuss Elena's condition with you?””
Peter nodded.
“She asked whether the patient was conscious and whether her husband had been contacted.””
Marcus's hands tightened.
“What did you tell her?””
“That Elena was receiving treatment and that the family would be informed through the authorized contact.””
“Did she ask you to delay contacting me?””
Peter looked down.
“Yes.””
The room went silent.
Marcus felt his pulse pounding.
“What exactly did she say?””
Peter swallowed.
“She said you were traveling and that the news might distract you from an important business meeting. She asked us to wait until the attending physician had assessed the situation.””
Marcus stared at him.
“My wife was in the hospital, and Vanessa asked you not to call me?””
Peter nodded.
“I should have escalated the request. I didn't.””
Richard remained composed.
“Did anyone else speak with Mrs. Reed?””
Peter hesitated.
“The attending physician.””
“Dr. Cole?””
“Yes.””
Marcus looked at Richard.
Peter continued.
“I remember them having a conversation outside the patient's room. I wasn't present for all of it.””
“Did you hear anything?””
Peter rubbed his hands together.
“I heard Mrs. Reed say that the patient had already agreed to a certain arrangement.””
“What arrangement?””
“I don't know.””
Marcus stood.
“Did Elena agree to anything?””
Peter looked at him.
“I can't say.””
Richard gestured for Marcus to sit.
“Let's continue.””
After the interview, Richard explained that the administrator's statement supported the concern that Vanessa had interfered with the communication process.
But the question of medical decisions remained unresolved.
That afternoon, Dr. Cole contacted Richard.
He had reviewed his archived notes.
There was an entry he hadn't noticed during the first meeting.
Elena had requested that no one other than Marcus or her mother receive information about her condition.
The request had been entered into the medical record.
Yet Vanessa had been permitted to visit.
Richard arranged another meeting with the doctor.
This time, Marcus asked directly.
“Did Vanessa speak to you about changing Elena's medical arrangements?””
Dr. Cole looked troubled.
“Yes.””
Marcus felt his chest tighten.
“What did she ask?””
“She wanted to know whether Elena had signed an advance directive.””
“Had she?””
“Yes. She had appointed you as her decision-maker.””
Marcus nodded.
“I knew that.””
Dr. Cole continued.
“Vanessa told me Elena had verbally changed her mind.””
Marcus stared.
“Did Elena tell you that?””
“No.””
“Then why did you entertain the request?””
“I didn't change the directive. I told Vanessa I needed confirmation from the patient.””
Marcus leaned forward.
“Did you speak to Elena?””
“Yes.””
“What did she say?””
The doctor looked down.
“She said she wanted you contacted immediately.””
Marcus closed his eyes.
“Why wasn't I?””
Dr. Cole took a long breath.
“I believed the administrator had already contacted you.””
Marcus stared at him.
“You believed?””
“Yes.””
Richard asked another question.
“Doctor, do you remember a man speaking with Vanessa that evening?””
Dr. Cole looked up.
His expression changed.
“I remember someone coming to the ward.””
“Who?””
“A man who introduced himself as Vanessa's brother.””
Marcus frowned.
“Vanessa doesn't have a brother.””
The doctor looked confused.
“She said his name was Daniel Miller.””
Marcus felt a chill.
Richard wrote the name down.
“Did you speak to him?””
“Briefly. He asked about Elena's condition and whether she had signed the financial documents Vanessa mentioned.””
Marcus's voice became cold.
“Financial documents?””
Dr. Cole nodded.
“I found it unusual. I told him medical staff couldn't discuss private financial matters.””
Richard leaned forward.
“Did you record the interaction?””
“I made a note in my personal incident log.””
“Can we see it?””
The doctor nodded.
“I'll arrange for the relevant records to be reviewed and released through the proper process.””
On the way home, Marcus searched the name Daniel Miller.
Nothing useful appeared.
He then called the hospital's records department and requested the visitor log through Richard.
Two days later, the information arrived.
The visitor had signed in as Daniel Miller.
But the identification number belonged to a man named Thomas Reed.
Marcus stared at the document.
Thomas Reed.
Vanessa's former husband.
Richard searched the name through the appropriate legal channels.
The result was a public court record.
Thomas Reed had been involved in a previous financial dispute with Vanessa.
The case had ended several years earlier.
But the filing contained a statement from Thomas.
My former spouse has repeatedly used different names when entering financial agreements. I believe she has concealed assets and misrepresented her identity.
Marcus read the statement twice.
Then he looked at Richard.
“That's him, isn't it?””
Richard nodded slowly.
“It appears so.””
Marcus leaned back.
“Why would Vanessa bring her former husband into this?””
Richard didn't answer immediately.
Instead, he opened another page.
It was a record of a recent property transaction.
Thomas Reed had received a payment from an account linked to the same financial institution Elena had contacted before her death.
The payment had been made four months earlier.
The amount was $40,000.
Marcus stared.
“Four months ago?””
Richard nodded.
“The same month Vanessa accessed Elena's storage unit.””
Marcus looked toward the living room.
Maya was showing Margaret how to ride the bicycle.
She wobbled, laughed, and fell gently onto the grass.
Margaret rushed to help her.
Marcus smiled faintly.
Then he turned back to Richard.
“Find Thomas Reed.””
Richard closed the folder.
“I will.””
But before he could leave, Marcus's phone rang.
An unfamiliar number appeared.
He answered.
“Hello?””
A man's voice spoke.
“Mr. Hayes? My name is Thomas Reed.””
Marcus went completely still.
The man continued.
“I know what Vanessa told you about your wife. But there's something she hasn't told you.””
Marcus gripped the phone.
“What?””
Thomas lowered his voice.
“Vanessa didn't act alone. And I have the original document she used to get access to Elena's financial records.””
Marcus looked at Richard.
“Where are you?””
Thomas hesitated.
Then he answered:
May you like
“I'm outside your house.””
At that exact moment, the doorbell rang.
