Chapter 3: The Closet Nobody Was Allowed to Open
The beeping continued.
Three short sounds.
Then silence.
Then three more.
Marcus recognized it.
It was the security sensor he had installed on the upstairs storage room.
He looked toward the staircase.
“Why is that alarm going off?””
Vanessa stepped in front of him.
“It's probably a battery problem.””
“Move.””
“Marcus, you're overreacting.””
He glanced at Maya.
“Sweetheart, stay here.””
Maya nodded.
Vanessa tried to smile at her.
“See? Daddy is upset. Go finish your cake.””
But Maya didn't move.
She was staring at the staircase.
“That's where she keeps them,” she whispered.
Marcus turned.
“Where she keeps what?””
Maya pointed toward the upstairs hallway.
“My things.””
Vanessa closed her eyes briefly.
“Marcus, please. She's confused.””
He took one step toward the stairs.
Vanessa grabbed his sleeve.
“Don't go up there.””
He looked down at her hand.
“Let go.””
She did.
Marcus climbed the staircase.
Vanessa followed closely.
At the top, he passed their bedroom and the guest room.
Then he reached the small storage room at the end of the hallway.
Its door was locked.
Marcus frowned.
“Why is this locked?””
Vanessa immediately answered.
“Because there are expensive things inside.””
“I installed this room for our storage.””
“Exactly. Storage.””
Marcus reached for the handle.
Vanessa stepped between him and the door.
“I said don't.””
He looked at her.
“What's inside?””
“Old boxes.””
“Then open it.””
She didn't move.
Marcus took out his phone and called the house manager, Daniel.
“Daniel, are you downstairs?””
“Yes, sir.””
“Bring the spare key upstairs.””
Vanessa's face tightened.
“You don't need to involve Daniel.””
“I need the key.””
“Marcus, this is ridiculous.””
He waited.
A minute later, Daniel appeared with a small key ring.
“Here you are, sir.””
Marcus took the key.
“Thank you.””
Vanessa turned toward Daniel.
“You can go.””
Daniel looked uncomfortable.
Marcus spoke first.
“Please stay.””
He inserted the key.
The lock turned.
The door opened.
A stale smell of cardboard and perfume drifted into the hallway.
Inside were several storage boxes, an old suitcase, and a metal cabinet.
Marcus switched on the light.
Then he saw the pink bicycle.
It was leaning against the wall.
Still wrapped in protective plastic.
The white basket was packed separately in a cardboard box.
Beside it sat a smaller package decorated with silver stars.
Marcus picked it up.
The label read:
*FOR MAYA. LOVE, DADDY.*
He turned toward Vanessa.
“You told her the bicycle was for Caleb.””
Vanessa rubbed her forehead.
“I was going to give it to her later.””
“Six weeks later?””
“I was waiting for the right moment.””
Marcus looked at the silver package.
“And this?””
Vanessa said nothing.
He opened it.
Inside was a delicate silver bracelet with a small heart-shaped charm.
Maya's name was engraved on the back.
Marcus closed his eyes for a moment.
He remembered buying it.
He had spent nearly an hour choosing the right one.
He had imagined Maya wearing it to school, showing her friends, and proudly explaining that her father had bought it.
Instead, it had been hidden in a locked room.
“What else is in here?”” he asked.
Vanessa stepped forward.
“Nothing important.””
Marcus opened the metal cabinet.
Inside were folders.
Some contained household receipts.
Others contained school documents.
At the bottom was a large envelope bearing his name.
He pulled it out.
The handwriting on the envelope belonged to Vanessa.
*MARCUS — DO NOT OPEN UNTIL WE DISCUSS THIS.*
He looked at her.
“What is this?””
“Private paperwork.””
“Why is my name on it?””
“Because I was going to discuss it with you.””
Marcus opened the envelope.
The first document was a printed email from Maya's school.
The school had contacted him about an upcoming scholarship program.
Maya's teacher had recommended her for a special academic assessment after noticing her exceptional reading ability.
Marcus smiled briefly.
“Why didn't you tell me about this?””
Vanessa shrugged.
“She isn't ready for anything like that.””
He continued reading.
The school had also asked for permission to conduct an assessment and provide additional learning support.
But there was a second document.
A withdrawal request.
The request had been submitted two weeks earlier.
The reason stated:
*PARENTAL REQUEST — FAMILY RELOCATION.*
Marcus read the document twice.
Then he looked at Vanessa.
“You withdrew Maya from school?””
“I was considering it.””
“You were considering moving her?””
“Marcus, please listen.””
“Why?””
Vanessa folded her arms.
“She needs more discipline. The school encourages her to be too independent.””
Marcus stared.
“What does that even mean?””
“She doesn't listen to me. Her teacher constantly praises her, and now she thinks she's special.””
“She's seven years old.””
“She has become disrespectful.””
Marcus placed the documents on a nearby box.
“Did you submit this?””
Vanessa hesitated.
“I made an inquiry.””
“The school has an official withdrawal request.””
“I was trying to find a better arrangement.””
“Without telling me?””
“You're never home!””
The words echoed through the small room.
Marcus stared at her.
Vanessa's voice became louder.
“You travel constantly. You leave me to handle everything. Then you come home and act like I'm the villain because your precious daughter didn't get a birthday cake!””
Marcus took a slow breath.
“I didn't ask you to replace her mother.””
Vanessa's eyes narrowed.
“No. You expected me to raise her.””
“I expected you to treat her kindly.””
“I have done everything for this family!””
“Except tell me the truth.””
She laughed bitterly.
“You want the truth? Fine.””
Vanessa walked to the storage boxes and pulled out a thick folder.
“You want to know why I couldn't stand looking at her?””
Marcus didn't answer.
Vanessa threw the folder onto the cabinet.
“Because everything in this house reminds me that you had another life before me.””
Marcus frowned.
“What?””
“Your late wife. Your memories. Your photographs.
Your promises to Maya. Everything.””
His expression hardened.
“Don't bring her into this.””
“Why not? She is everywhere!””
Vanessa pointed toward the hallway.
“You still have her photograph in your office. You still talk about how she used to make Maya's favorite breakfast. You even call Maya the name you used to call her!””
Marcus's voice dropped.
“Because Maya is her daughter.””
“And I'm supposed to live with that every day?””
“You knew I had a daughter when you married me.””
Vanessa looked away.
For a moment, the room was silent.
Then Marcus noticed the folder.
He opened it.
Inside were copies of documents relating to Maya's inheritance.
His late wife, Elena, had left a small trust for their daughter.
Marcus had been managing it with the help of his attorney.
The documents showed a recent inquiry from a financial institution.
Someone had requested information about the trust.
Someone who wasn't Marcus.
He checked the signature.
It was Vanessa's.
His stomach tightened.
“What did you do?””
Vanessa stepped forward.
“Give me that.””
Marcus held the papers away.
“Why did you contact the bank about Maya's trust?””
“I was trying to understand the household finances.””
“You had no authority to do that.””
“I am your wife!””
“And that doesn't give you the right to access my daughter's inheritance.””
Vanessa's eyes filled with tears.
“You make me sound like a criminal.””
Marcus looked at the papers.
“Then explain this.””
She opened her mouth.
Nothing came out.
A small voice interrupted them.
“Daddy?””
Marcus turned.
Maya stood in the doorway.
Daniel had apparently allowed her upstairs.
She was holding her empty cake plate.
“Are you angry?””
Marcus immediately crouched.
“No, sweetheart.””
Maya looked at the bicycle.
“Is that mine?””
“Yes.””
“Really?””
Marcus nodded.
“I bought it for you.””
Maya's face brightened.
“Can I ride it?””
“Of course.””
She looked at Vanessa.
“I'm sorry I thought it was Caleb's.””
Vanessa's jaw tightened.
Marcus gently touched Maya's shoulder.
“You don't need to apologize.””
Maya looked at the silver bracelet.
“Is that mine too?””
“Yes, princess.””
She smiled.
Then her expression changed.
“Daddy?””
“What is it?””
“Can I tell you something without Vanessa getting angry?””
Marcus felt his chest tighten.
“Of course.””
Maya looked down at her plate.
“Sometimes she tells me to go into this room when people visit.””
Marcus stared at Vanessa.
“Why?””
Maya continued.
“She says I make the house look messy. She says people don't need to know you have a daughter who cries all the time.””
Vanessa immediately interrupted.
“That is not what I said!””
Maya flinched.
Marcus raised one hand.
“Let her speak.””
Maya swallowed.
“Sometimes she locks the door.””
Marcus felt the blood drain from his face.
“How long?””
Maya shook her head.
“I don't know. Sometimes until the guests leave.””
Vanessa stepped toward her.
“Maya, stop making things up.””
Maya immediately backed into her father.
Marcus stood between them.
“Don't speak to her like that.””
Vanessa's face twisted.
“You're going to believe a child over your own wife?””
Marcus looked at her.
“I believe what I can see. The locked door. The hidden presents.
The money. The school documents.””
He pointed toward the hallway.
“Go downstairs.””
Vanessa stared at him.
“Excuse me?””
“Go downstairs. We're finished talking for today.””
She let out a disbelieving laugh.
“You can't throw me out of my own house.””
Marcus looked at Daniel.
“Please stay with Maya.””
Then he turned toward Vanessa.
“I am calling my attorney, and I am having every document in that cabinet reviewed.””
Her expression changed.
“You wouldn't destroy our marriage over this.””
Marcus looked at the little girl standing behind him.
“She is my child.””
Vanessa shook her head.
“You're making a terrible mistake.””
Marcus didn't answer.
He helped Maya put the bracelet on her wrist.
She looked at the tiny silver heart.
“It's beautiful, Daddy.””
He kissed her forehead.
“I wanted you to have it on your birthday.””
Maya wrapped her arms around his waist.
“Thank you.””
For the first time that afternoon, she looked genuinely happy.
But the moment Marcus returned to the cabinet, he noticed one final envelope hidden beneath the inheritance papers.
It contained a photograph of Maya's late mother.
On the back was a handwritten message:
If anything happens to me, please make sure Maya never loses the home and future I worked so hard to give her.
Marcus recognized the handwriting.
He also recognized the signature at the bottom.
It was Elena's.
But what made his hands begin to shake was the date.
The document had been signed just two days before Elena died.
May you like
And beneath it was a second page, containing a name Marcus had never expected to see connected to his wife's final arrangements.
*Vanessa.*
