Chapter 7: The Phone Call That Changed Everything

Marcus read the hospital record again.

Then a third time.

The handwriting was unmistakable.

*Emergency contact notified: Vanessa.*

The date was three years earlier.

Two hours before Marcus received the call informing him that Elena's condition had become critical.

He picked up his phone and dialed Richard.

“Richard, I need you back here immediately.””

“What happened?””

“I found a hospital record. Vanessa was contacted before I was.””

There was silence.

“Are you certain?””

“I'm looking at it.””

“Don't touch anything else. Photograph the document, put the original back where you found it, and wait for me.””

Marcus glanced toward the living room.

Maya was sitting on the carpet, arranging her birthday presents.

She had finally taken the pink bicycle out of its packaging. Daniel was helping her attach the handlebars.

“Daddy!”” she called.

“Look! I can reach the pedals!””

Marcus forced a smile.

“That's wonderful, princess.””

She climbed off and ran toward him.

“Can we practice tomorrow?””

“Absolutely.””

“Promise?””

“Promise.””

Maya hugged him before returning to the bicycle.

Marcus looked down at the medical file.

Something about the record bothered him.

Vanessa hadn't been listed as an emergency contact.

She hadn't been married to him.

She hadn't even been a close family friend.

So why had the hospital called her?

And why hadn't anyone called him first?

Richard arrived twenty minutes later.

He examined the record carefully, then photographed it.

“Where did you find this?””

“In Elena's medical folder.””

Richard frowned.

“Do you remember the night she was admitted?””

Marcus nodded.

“I was in Chicago. My assistant received a call from the hospital. They told me Elena had suffered a sudden medical emergency.””

“And when did you arrive?””

“Just after midnight.””

Richard looked at the record.

“What time did Vanessa receive the call?””

“Six forty-three in the evening.””

Richard checked the next page.

“And you?””

“Eight fifty-one.””

Richard slowly lowered the folder.

“That's a significant difference.””

Marcus rubbed his forehead.

“I was told the hospital couldn't reach anyone immediately.””

“Who told you?””

“My assistant. She said someone from the hospital had contacted the house.””

“Did she mention Vanessa?””

“No.””

Richard looked toward the living room.

“Does Maya know anything about that night?””

Marcus shook his head.

“She was four. I told her Mommy had become very sick and gone to heaven.””

Richard closed the folder.

“We need the hospital's original communication records. We also need to know who authorized Vanessa to receive information.””

Marcus nodded.

“Can you get them?””

“I can request them through the appropriate legal process. But we shouldn't assume wrongdoing based on one entry.””

Marcus understood.

He wanted answers, but he didn't want to build a story out of suspicion.

Then Daniel appeared in the doorway.

“Sir?””

Marcus looked up.

“Yes?””

“I'm sorry to interrupt. There's something you should see.””

Daniel held a small cardboard box.

Marcus frowned.

“Where did you find that?””

“In the garage, behind the old cleaning supplies. It has Mrs. Elena's name written on it.””

Marcus took the box.

His late wife's name was written in blue ink.

He recognized the handwriting immediately.

He opened it.

Inside were several photographs, two old notebooks, and a small digital voice recorder.

Marcus picked up the recorder.

“Where was this?””

“Behind the storage cabinet. I was moving things to make room for the bicycle.””

Marcus pressed the power button.

The device blinked.

There was one saved recording.

Richard leaned closer.

“Don't play it yet. Let's make sure it's preserved.””

Marcus nodded.

He photographed the device and connected it to a laptop.

The recording was dated three years earlier.

The evening before Elena died.

His fingers hovered over the play button.

Then he pressed it.

A faint rustling sound filled the room.

Elena's voice emerged.

“Marcus, if you're listening to this, I hope I'm wrong about everything.””

Marcus closed his eyes.

He hadn't heard her voice in years.

“I spoke to Vanessa today. She asked me again about Maya's trust. I told her the same thing I told her last month. The money belongs to Maya.””

A pause.

Then Elena continued.

“She became angry. She said I was making it impossible for her to feel like part of the family.””

There was another rustling sound.

“I don't want to believe she would hurt us. But something is wrong.””

Marcus gripped the edge of the desk.

Elena's voice became quieter.

“If I become seriously ill, please don't let Vanessa make decisions about Maya without you.””

The recording ended.

Marcus stared at the screen.

Richard remained silent.

Then Marcus noticed another file.

It was dated the following morning.

He clicked it.

This time, Elena sounded frightened.

“Marcus, I tried calling you. I don't know if you'll receive this message.””

A pause.

“I think Vanessa knows something about the documents I found. She came into the bedroom this morning and asked whether I had spoken to the lawyer.””

Marcus leaned forward.

Then Elena said something that made him stop breathing.

“She told me that if I disappeared, Maya would be better off with someone who could give her a normal family.””

The recording ended.

Marcus sat motionless.

Richard slowly closed the laptop.

“Marcus, I think we need to involve the authorities if the evidence supports a possible crime. But first, we need the complete records.””

Marcus nodded.

He looked toward the living room.

Maya was laughing as Daniel helped her balance on the bicycle.

She had no idea what was happening.

He walked over and sat beside her.

“Daddy?”” she asked.

“Yes?””

“Why are you sad?””

He gently touched her hair.

“I'm thinking about Mommy.””

Maya looked down at her silver bracelet.

“Did Mommy like bicycles?””

Marcus smiled.

“She loved them.””

“Then maybe she would like mine.””

“I think she would.””

Maya leaned against him.

“Can we put her picture near my bed?””

“Of course.””

That evening, after Maya had gone to sleep, Marcus returned to the study.

He opened Elena's old notebook.

Most of the pages contained ordinary things: grocery lists, birthday reminders, recipes, and little notes about Maya's favorite songs.

But near the back was a page with several names and dates.

One name appeared repeatedly.

*Dr. Adrian Cole.*

Marcus recognized the name.

Dr. Cole had been the physician who treated Elena during her final hospitalization.

Beside the name was a handwritten sentence.

Ask him why Vanessa knew before Marcus.

Marcus immediately called Richard.

“Do you know Dr. Adrian Cole?””

“Yes. He was listed in the hospital records.””

“Can we speak to him?””

“We can try.””

Marcus looked at the notebook again.

Beneath the doctor's name, Elena had written another sentence.

He promised he would tell the truth if anything happened to me.

And suddenly Marcus understood that the hospital record might be only the beginning.
