Chapter 5: The Woman Who Wanted to Become Her Guardian

Marcus read the petition slowly.

The first page contained Vanessa's personal information.

The second described her relationship with Maya.

The third made allegations that left Marcus unable to speak.

According to the document, Marcus had been emotionally absent from his daughter for several years.

Vanessa claimed she had provided Maya with daily care, emotional support, and financial stability.

She described herself as the child's primary caregiver.

Then came the sentence that made Marcus's hands tighten around the paper.

The minor child has repeatedly expressed discomfort living under her father's supervision and has indicated a desire for a more stable household.

Marcus looked up.

“Did you write this?””

Vanessa pulled out a chair.

“It's a legal document. My attorney prepared it.””

“You're claiming Maya wants to leave me?””

“She has been unhappy.””

“Because you made her believe I forgot her birthday!””

Vanessa shrugged.

“That's your interpretation.””

Marcus placed the petition on the table.

“Who told you to file this?””

“No one.””

“Then why now?””

“Because someone has to think about Maya's future.””

Marcus stared at her.

“You hid her presents, kept her birthday money, tried to interfere with her schooling, and now you're pretending to be her protector?””

Vanessa's expression became sharp.

“Don't forget who has been taking care of her while you've been traveling.””

“I paid for everything.””

“Money isn't parenting.””

The words landed harder than Marcus expected.

He glanced at Maya.

She was standing near Daniel, quietly listening.

He realized that Vanessa had one point.

He had traveled too much.

He had trusted someone else to care for the most important person in his life.

That trust had been misplaced.

Marcus walked over to Maya.

“Sweetheart, would you like to spend some time with Daniel in the garden?””

Maya shook her head.

“I want to stay with you.””

“You can see me from the kitchen window.””

She looked uncertain.

Marcus crouched.

“I'm not going anywhere.””

After a moment, she agreed.

Daniel took her outside.

Marcus turned back toward Vanessa.

“Show me the rest.””

Vanessa opened her handbag and removed another document.

It was a sworn statement.

Marcus scanned the first paragraph.

Then the second.

His face became increasingly pale.

Vanessa claimed Maya had behavioral problems.

She claimed the child frequently lied, stole food, and deliberately damaged Caleb's belongings.

There were even photographs attached.

One showed a broken toy car.

Another showed a glass of spilled juice.

The captions suggested Maya had caused both incidents intentionally.

Marcus looked at Vanessa.

“You're blaming her for these things?””

“Because she did them.””

“The toy car?””

“Caleb's favorite.””

Marcus turned the photograph around.

He recognized the toy.

He had bought it for Caleb.

But the broken wheel was clearly the result of a manufacturing defect. He remembered helping Caleb fix it several months earlier.

“What about the juice?””

Vanessa sighed.

“She knocked it over.””

“And?””

“She refused to clean it.””

Marcus stared.

“You want a judge to believe a seven-year-old spilling juice makes her an unfit child?””

“I want a judge to understand the situation.””

Marcus placed the documents down.

“I'm not signing anything.””

Vanessa's expression hardened.

“You don't have to sign. The court can decide.””

“Then we'll let the court decide.””

She leaned forward.

“You should be careful, Marcus. Your business travels are documented. You have been away from home for months at a time. I have school records, medical appointments, and witnesses who can confirm I have been the one raising Maya.””

Marcus looked at her.

“Are you threatening me?””

“I'm telling you the truth.””

For the first time, Marcus understood that the petition wasn't simply an emotional reaction.

Vanessa had prepared it.

She had collected photographs, written statements, and gathered information about his work schedule.

This wasn't something she had decided that afternoon.

She had been planning it.

Marcus picked up his phone and called his attorney again.

“Richard, I need you here tonight.””

“What's happened?””

“Vanessa has filed a guardianship petition.””

A pause.

“Don't say anything else to her. I'll come immediately.””

Marcus ended the call.

Vanessa stood.

“You're making a mistake.””

Marcus looked at the front door.

“You need to pack your things.””

Her mouth fell open.

“What?””

“You and Caleb can stay with your sister tonight. I want some space while the lawyers review everything.””

“You can't throw me out!””

“I'm asking you to leave temporarily. We can discuss the legal arrangements through our attorneys.””

Vanessa laughed bitterly.

“After everything I've sacrificed?””

Marcus didn't answer.

She walked toward the stairs.

Then she stopped.

“Do you know what your daughter is really like when you're not around?””

Marcus looked at her.

“What does that mean?””

Vanessa turned.

“She isn't the innocent little angel you think she is.””

Marcus's voice became quiet.

“Don't.””

“She knows exactly how to manipulate you. She cries, she looks helpless, and you immediately give her everything.””

Marcus stepped closer.

“She is seven.””

“And Caleb is seven too! But nobody ever cares about what he feels.””

For a moment, Marcus saw something behind Vanessa's anger.

Not guilt.

Resentment.

A resentment so deep that she had apparently begun treating a child as an enemy.

Then Caleb appeared at the top of the staircase.

He was holding his golden birthday crown.

“Mom?””

Vanessa immediately changed her expression.

“Come here, sweetheart.””

Caleb came downstairs.

“Are we going somewhere?””

Vanessa knelt.

“Maybe.””

He looked at Marcus.

“Is it because Maya ruined my birthday?””

Marcus crouched.

“No, Caleb. Maya didn't ruin anything.””

Caleb frowned.

“But Mom said she was trying to take everything from me.””

Vanessa stood quickly.

“Caleb, go upstairs.””

The boy didn't move.

“Mom, are we leaving because of her?””

Maya had just returned from the garden.

She stood behind Daniel, holding the bicycle's small instruction booklet.

Caleb pointed at her.

“She always gets Dad's attention!””

Maya lowered her eyes.

Marcus looked at his stepson.

“Caleb, come here.””

The boy hesitated.

Then he walked over.

Marcus knelt in front of him.

“I want you to listen carefully. Maya is not taking anything from you. You have your own birthday, your own presents, and your own mother. Your sister deserves those things too.””

Caleb's mouth trembled.

“But you gave her my cake.””

Marcus shook his head.

“It was a cake for both of your birthdays. I bought it with the money I sent for Maya's celebration.””

Caleb looked confused.

Vanessa immediately interrupted.

“Enough. He's a child. Stop questioning him.””

Marcus stood.

“Then stop putting adult problems into his head.””

Vanessa grabbed Caleb's hand.

“Go upstairs.””

This time, he obeyed.

As they disappeared, Maya approached her father.

“Daddy?””

“Yes?””

“Is Caleb angry because I ate the cake?””

Marcus shook his head.

“No, sweetheart.””

Maya looked at the floor.

“I can give him my bicycle if he wants it.””

Marcus felt his heart ache.

He knelt and held both her hands.

“You don't have to give away your birthday presents to make someone love you.””

Maya looked at him.

“Not even if they're family?””

“Especially not then.””

A car pulled into the driveway.

Richard, Marcus's attorney, had arrived.

He entered carrying a leather briefcase and greeted Marcus.

“Show me everything.””

Marcus handed him the documents.

Richard examined them without speaking.

He studied the guardianship petition, the financial papers, and the child's handwritten statement.

Then he looked toward Vanessa.

“Mrs. Vanessa, may I ask when you first began preparing this application?””

Vanessa folded her arms.

“A few weeks ago.””

“Did you consult anyone about the child's inheritance?””

“No.””

Richard lifted the bank inquiry document.

“This appears to be an inquiry made using information from the trust's beneficiary records.””

Vanessa's expression tightened.

“I already explained that.””

Richard didn't respond.

He took out his phone and made a call.

Marcus watched him.

“Who are you calling?””

“An associate who handled Elena's estate.””

A few minutes later, Richard ended the call.

Then he turned toward Marcus.

“There's something you need to know.””

“What?””

Richard opened his briefcase and removed a sealed legal envelope.

“Elena left an additional instruction. It was not part of the ordinary guardianship paperwork.””

Marcus frowned.

“What instruction?””

Richard placed the envelope on the table.

“It concerns Maya's inheritance and the person Elena specifically warned us about.””

Vanessa suddenly stepped forward.

“Richard, you have no right to open that.””

Richard looked at her.

“Mrs. Vanessa, I haven't opened it yet.””

Her face lost color.

Marcus stared at the envelope.

“Why does she know what's inside?””

Richard carefully examined the seal.

Then he looked at Marcus.

“Because Elena requested that this document only be opened if someone attempted to interfere with Maya's trust.””

He broke the seal.

Inside was a single page.

May you like

And the first sentence read:

If Vanessa ever tries to gain control over my daughter's inheritance, I want Marcus to know exactly why I never trusted her.
