Chapter 6: The Secret Elena Took to Her Grave
Nobody spoke.
Richard placed the letter on the dining table.
Marcus stared at his late wife's handwriting.
He recognized every curve.
The way Elena crossed her capital letters.
The small flourish beneath her signature.
For a moment, he was no longer standing in the kitchen with his attorney and his second wife.
He was remembering the woman who used to sit beside him on the sofa, holding Maya as a baby.
The woman who had promised they would raise their daughter together.
He swallowed.
“Read it.””
Richard looked at him.
“Are you sure?””
Marcus nodded.
Richard began.
Marcus, if you are reading this, something has happened that I hoped would never happen.
I know you love me. I know you will do everything possible to give Maya a happy life. But there is something I never found the courage to tell you.
I do not trust Vanessa.
Marcus stopped breathing for a moment.
Vanessa moved toward the table.
“That's enough.””
Richard continued.
When Vanessa first came into our lives, I wanted to believe she was a kind person. I wanted Maya to grow up surrounded by love, even if that love came from someone who was not her mother.
But I began noticing things.
Vanessa asked questions about Maya's inheritance. She wanted to know how much money was in the trust, when Maya would receive it, and whether she could be listed as a financial representative.
When I refused, she became angry.
Marcus slowly looked up.
Vanessa was staring at the letter.
Richard continued.
I also found out that Vanessa had contacted a financial adviser without my permission.
I confronted her. She told me she was only trying to understand our family's future.
But I heard her speaking to someone on the phone afterward. She said that if something happened to me, everything would become much easier.
The room seemed to shrink.
Marcus looked at Vanessa.
“Who were you talking to?””
She shook her head.
“This is ridiculous.””
Richard continued reading.
I don't want to accuse anyone unfairly. But I want you to protect Maya.
If Vanessa ever attempts to gain control of the trust, please investigate the circumstances carefully.
There is another matter.
I discovered that Vanessa had been keeping copies of personal financial documents that did not belong to her.
I believe she may have access to information about our family that she should never have had.
The letter ended with a final paragraph.
Marcus, I know you will want to believe the best in people. That is one of the things I love most about you.
But please don't let your kindness become Maya's weakness.
She is all I leave behind that is truly mine.
Protect her.
Love always,
Elena.
Marcus lowered his head.
His hands were trembling.
Vanessa let out a short laugh.
“You're going to believe a dead woman's letter?””
Marcus looked at her.
“Those are her words.””
“She was paranoid.””
Richard calmly folded the paper.
“Mrs. Vanessa, I suggest you avoid making statements that could complicate this situation further.””
Vanessa turned toward him.
“Stay out of my marriage.””
Richard didn't move.
“This is no longer simply a marital disagreement. We have a child whose inheritance may have been improperly accessed.””
Vanessa grabbed her handbag.
“I've had enough.””
Marcus stood.
“Where are you going?””
“To my sister's house.””
“That's probably best.””
She turned toward the staircase.
Then she stopped and looked at him.
“You think Elena was perfect? You think she knew everything?””
Marcus said nothing.
Vanessa continued.
“She was controlling. She wanted everything arranged her way. She never wanted me to have a place in this family.””
Marcus looked at the letter.
“She wanted our daughter protected.””
Vanessa laughed.
“Your daughter. Always your daughter.””
She walked upstairs.
A few minutes later, a bedroom door slammed.
Marcus remained beside the table.
Richard placed a hand on his shoulder.
“There's something else we need to discuss.””
Marcus looked up.
“What?””
“The trust documents Elena signed contain a provision requiring an independent financial review if there is evidence of unauthorized access.””
“Can you arrange that?””
“Yes. But I need to know whether you authorized Vanessa to contact the bank.””
“No.””
“Did you give her access to any of the trust documents?””
Marcus hesitated.
He remembered the months following Elena's death.
He had been devastated.
He had allowed Vanessa to help organize household paperwork, insurance documents, and school records.
He had trusted her.
“I may have given her access to some general financial files,” he admitted.
“But never permission to act on Maya's trust.””
Richard nodded.
“Then we'll need to establish exactly what happened.””
A small sound came from the hallway.
Maya stood there.
Her eyes were red.
“Daddy?””
Marcus immediately walked toward her.
“What is it?””
“Are you talking about Mommy?””
He knelt.
“Yes, sweetheart.””
“Is she angry with Vanessa?””
Marcus looked at Richard.
Then he returned his attention to Maya.
“No, princess. Your mother loved you very much.””
Maya held out a small photograph.
It showed Elena sitting on a picnic blanket with Maya in her arms.
“Can I keep this?””
Marcus smiled sadly.
“Of course.””
Maya looked at the letter.
“Did Mommy write something?””
Marcus nodded.
“She wrote something to help protect you.””
Maya looked at the photograph.
“Does she know I'm here?””
Marcus's throat tightened.
“I believe she would be very proud of you.””
Maya leaned against him.
Then she whispered:
“Daddy, I miss Mommy.””
Marcus wrapped both arms around her.
“I miss her too.””
For several minutes, neither spoke.
Then footsteps sounded on the staircase.
Vanessa came downstairs carrying a suitcase.
Caleb followed with a small backpack.
His eyes were swollen from crying.
Marcus stood.
“Are you leaving now?””
Vanessa nodded.
“I'll stay with my sister until you calm down.””
Richard stepped aside.
Vanessa approached the front door.
Then she turned back.
“Marcus, you're making a terrible mistake.””
He looked at her.
“Perhaps I should have listened to Elena.””
Vanessa's expression changed.
She looked at Maya.
Then at the letter on the table.
“You don't know what happened before Elena died.””
Marcus frowned.
“What does that mean?””
Vanessa adjusted the strap of her handbag.
“Ask your attorney to investigate the hospital records.””
Richard immediately looked up.
“Why the hospital records?””
Vanessa's lips tightened.
“Because your wife wasn't the only person who knew something was wrong that night.””
Marcus stepped toward her.
“What are you saying?””
Vanessa opened the front door.
“I'm saying you should stop pretending you know everything about your first marriage.””
Then she walked outside.
Caleb followed, carrying his backpack.
The door closed.
Marcus stood motionless.
Richard slowly returned to the table.
“What did she mean by that?””
Marcus shook his head.
“I don't know.””
Richard picked up his briefcase.
“I'll request the original trust records and review the guardianship filing. I'll also look into the hospital records.””
Marcus looked toward Maya.
She was sitting on the sofa, holding the photograph of her mother.
He walked over and sat beside her.
“Everything okay, sweetheart?””
Maya nodded.
“Can we still ride my bicycle tomorrow?””
Marcus smiled.
“Of course.””
“Even if Vanessa doesn't come back?””
Marcus paused.
“Yes. Even then.””
Maya rested her head against his arm.
For the first time in months, the house was quiet.
But Marcus couldn't stop thinking about Vanessa's final words.
He went into his study and searched through an old filing cabinet.
After several minutes, he found Elena's medical folder.
He opened it.
The hospital discharge summary was there, along with the original emergency report.
He read the first page.
Then the second.
His eyes stopped at a section near the bottom.
*EMERGENCY CONTACT NOTIFIED BEFORE PATIENT'S CONDITION DETERIORATED: VANESSA.*
Marcus frowned.
That couldn't be right.
Vanessa hadn't been his wife then.
She had barely been part of their lives.
He turned the page.
There was a handwritten note from a hospital employee.
Caller requested that family members not be informed until further assessment was completed.
Marcus felt cold.
He called Richard immediately.
“Richard, I need you to come back.””
“What happened?””
“I found something in Elena's hospital file.””
“What?””
Marcus looked at the handwriting again.
May you like
Then he read the name beside the phone number.
*Vanessa had called the hospital two hours before Marcus was notified that his wife was dying.*
