Chapter 9: The Little Girl Who Remembered Everything

Marcus stared at his daughter.

“Sweetheart, are you sure?””

Maya nodded.

Her small fingers twisted the fabric of his jacket.

“I remember the blue chair.””

Marcus crouched.

“What blue chair?””

“The one outside Mommy's room.””

He looked at Richard, who had arrived moments earlier and was standing near the hallway.

Richard quietly took out his notebook.

Marcus returned his attention to Maya.

“Tell me what you remember.””

Maya swallowed.

“I was with Grandma that day. She brought me to the hospital because she said Mommy wanted to see me.””

Marcus's chest tightened.

He had always believed Maya had stayed with her grandmother until Elena died.

“When did Vanessa arrive?””

Maya looked toward the window.

“After Grandma went to get coffee.””

Vanessa immediately interrupted.

“She was four years old. She can't remember something like that.””

Marcus stood.

“Let her speak.””

Maya continued.

“Vanessa came into the room. She told me Mommy was sleeping.””

“Did you see Mommy?””

Maya nodded.

“She had a white blanket. Her eyes were closed.””

Marcus knelt again.

“Did Vanessa say anything else?””

Maya's eyes filled.

“She told me I had to be a good girl. She said if I cried, Mommy would get worse.””

Marcus felt his heart break.

Maya continued.

“Then she took me outside and gave me a little cookie. She said we had to go home.””

Marcus looked toward Vanessa.

“Why did you take her away?””

Vanessa shook her head.

“This is absurd.””

Richard stepped forward.

“Mrs. Vanessa, I strongly advise you not to interfere with the child's recollection.””

Vanessa laughed.

“She's repeating something someone told her.””

Maya suddenly spoke.

“No, I'm not!””

Everyone turned.

The little girl was crying now.

“You told me not to tell Daddy!””

Vanessa's face tightened.

“Maya, stop.””

Marcus moved between them.

“Don't speak to her.””

Vanessa threw up her hands.

“I was trying to protect her!””

“From what?””

“From seeing her mother die!””

The words came out loudly.

Silence filled the living room.

Marcus stared at her.

Richard slowly looked up from his notebook.

Vanessa seemed to realize what she had said.

She pressed her lips together.

Marcus spoke quietly.

“You knew Elena was dying?””

Vanessa shook her head.

“That's not what I meant.””

“You just said you were protecting Maya from seeing her mother die.””

“I was trying to keep her from being traumatized.””

Marcus stepped closer.

“You were at the hospital before I was contacted. You took my daughter away. You told her not to tell me.””

Vanessa looked toward the front door.

“I'm leaving.””

Richard moved aside.

“That's advisable.””

Vanessa grabbed her handbag.

Before walking out, she turned toward Marcus.

“You don't understand what happened that night.””

“Then explain it.””

She shook her head.

“Not here.””

“Where?””

Vanessa looked at Maya.

“Not in front of her.””

Then she walked out.

Marcus watched the door close.

His daughter was crying quietly.

He picked her up and carried her to the sofa.

“It's okay, sweetheart.””

Maya buried her face in his shoulder.

“Are you angry?””

“No.””

“Because I told you?””

Marcus pulled back.

“Never. You did the right thing.””

Maya wiped her nose.

“I didn't want you to be sad.””

Marcus kissed her forehead.

“Your job is to be a little girl. You don't have to protect grown-ups from the truth.””

Richard waited until Maya had calmed down.

Then he spoke.

“Marcus, we need to document everything she remembers, but not pressure her. A child shouldn't have to repeat a painful experience over and over.””

Marcus nodded.

“I understand.””

Richard opened his briefcase.

“I also received an update from the hospital.””

Marcus looked up.

“What?””

“The medical records department found an electronic access log. Someone changed the emergency contact number at 4:12 p.m. on the day Elena was admitted.””

“Who?””

Richard placed a printed page on the table.

The user account belonged to a hospital administrator.

But the access note contained a second name.

*Vanessa Reed — Authorized Information Contact.*

Marcus stared at it.

“How did she become an authorized contact?””

Richard shook his head.

“We don't know yet. The hospital is investigating.””

He placed another page beside it.

“This is more concerning.””

It was a copy of a document from Elena's estate file.

Three days before her death, someone had requested a temporary change to the management of her personal assets.

The request had been rejected.

Marcus read the name of the person who submitted it.

Vanessa.

His hands tightened.

“She tried to take control of the money before Elena died.””

“That's what the document suggests. But we need the original submission and the bank's records.””

Marcus looked toward Maya.

She was sitting on the floor, carefully arranging her birthday cards.

He lowered his voice.

“Could this have been about her inheritance?””

“Possibly.””

Marcus shook his head.

“Why would someone do this?””

Richard didn't answer.

Instead, he opened another folder.

“There is one more thing.””

Marcus looked at him.

“What now?””

“Your late wife's former attorney contacted me this morning.””

“Why?””

“He remembered Elena asking him to prepare a separate document. Apparently, she never signed the final version.””

Marcus frowned.

“What document?””

“A revised guardianship instruction.””

Marcus sat down.

Richard explained that Elena had initially intended to appoint Marcus as Maya's sole guardian, with her mother as the backup guardian if anything happened to him.

But after her concerns about Vanessa grew, she wanted to add an independent oversight arrangement for Maya's inheritance.

The attorney had drafted the document.

However, Elena had died before completing the signing process.

“So the document was never legally finalized?”” Marcus asked.

“Correct. But the draft may contain important information.””

Richard removed a photocopy.

Marcus read the first page.

Then he reached the second.

There was a paragraph about Maya's maternal grandmother.

It stated that Elena wanted her mother to remain involved in Maya's life and to have access to important information about her education and welfare.

Marcus frowned.

“Why would Vanessa try to keep Maya away from her grandmother?””

Richard looked at him.

“Has Maya seen her grandmother recently?””

Marcus shook his head.

“Not for several months.””

“Why?””

“Vanessa told me her mother-in-law had moved overseas.””

Richard stared.

“Did you verify that?””

Marcus felt something cold settle in his stomach.

“No.””

He took out his phone and searched through his old messages.

He found a conversation from almost a year earlier.

Vanessa had written:

Your mother-in-law keeps interfering. She thinks she knows how to raise Maya better than me. I suggest you let her have some distance.

Marcus had replied:

Please handle it gently. I don't want Maya caught in arguments.

He stared at his own response.

He had trusted Vanessa to manage a relationship that mattered deeply to his daughter.

“Richard,” he said quietly, “I need to find Elena's mother.””

Richard nodded.

“What's her name?””

“Margaret.””

“Do you have her number?””

Marcus searched his contacts.

He found an old number.

He called.

The phone rang.

Once.

Twice.

Three times.

Then a woman's voice answered.

“Hello?””

Marcus almost dropped the phone.

“Margaret?””

There was a long silence.

Then she spoke.

“Marcus?””

“Yes. It's me.””

Her voice immediately changed.

“Is Maya all right?””

Marcus looked toward the little girl on the carpet.

“Yes. She's safe.””

“Thank God.””

“Margaret, I've been trying to understand what happened after Elena died.””

Another silence.

Then Margaret began crying.

“Oh, Marcus. I've waited so long for you to call.””

Marcus stood.

“What do you mean?””

“I tried calling you. I wrote letters. I even went to the house.””

“When?””

“Several times.””

Marcus felt his stomach tighten.

“Why didn't I know?””

Margaret's voice broke.

“Vanessa told me you didn't want me near Maya.””

Marcus closed his eyes.

“What?””

“She said you were starting a new life and that I needed to stop upsetting your family.””

Marcus looked at Richard.

Margaret continued.

“I didn't believe her at first. But she showed me a message supposedly written by you.””

“What message?””

“She said you wanted no contact with me.””

Marcus's voice became strained.

“I never wrote that.””

“I know that now.””

He gripped the phone.

“Where are you?””

“I'm still in the same house.””

“Can you come here?””

Margaret began crying harder.

“Marcus, there's something I need to tell you before I see Maya.””

“What?””

“I was with Elena the day she died. And I know Vanessa came to the hospital before you were called.””

Marcus went completely still.

Margaret lowered her voice.

“I saw them arguing outside Elena's room.””

“What were they arguing about?””

Margaret took a shaky breath.

Then she said:

“Your wife had discovered that Vanessa was using a different name when she contacted the bank.””

Marcus looked at Richard.

“What name?””

Margaret answered.

“Rebecca Miller.””

And when Marcus searched that name on his phone, he found something that made his blood run cold.
