Chapter 11: The Father Tyler Was Never Allowed to Know
Rebecca dropped the phone onto the coffee table.
Vanessa's voice continued through the speaker.
"Rebecca? Are you listening?""
Nobody moved.
Then Rebecca reached forward and ended the call.
I stared at her.
"Where is Tyler's father?""
She pressed both hands against her face.
"I don't know where he is now.""
"What does that mean?""
"His name is David Miller. We were married for four years.""
"Why did Vanessa tell everyone he abandoned Tyler?""
Rebecca looked at me.
"Because he didn't.""
I felt a cold pressure in my chest.
"Explain.""
Rebecca took a long breath.
"David was a good father. He worked construction, came home every night, and never missed Tyler's doctor's appointments. But when Tyler was two, he discovered Vanessa had been moving money from our joint account.""
"How much?""
"Almost thirty thousand dollars.""
Daniel looked up.
"Did he report it?""
"Yes. He filed a complaint and contacted the bank.""
Rebecca continued.
"Vanessa told him she had borrowed the money to help me. But when David asked for records, she couldn't explain where it had gone.""
I frowned.
"What happened next?""
"She accused him of being violent.""
I stared at her.
"Was he?""
"No.""
"Did he ever hurt Tyler?""
"Never.""
Rebecca wiped her eyes.
"Vanessa filed for a protective order. She submitted photographs of bruises she claimed were mine. But I knew she had taken them from an old accident report.""
Daniel leaned forward.
"Did you challenge the order?""
"Yes. But David was terrified of losing his job and going to jail. He left town after the hearing.""
I shook my head.
"Why didn't he come back?""
Rebecca looked down.
"Because Vanessa told him she would make sure Tyler never saw him again.""
The room went silent.
I thought about Tyler.
The little boy who had called me that morning, asking whether I was coming home.
He had grown up believing his father had abandoned him.
Just as Maya had grown up believing her mother had abandoned her.
The same story.
Different child.
Different victim.
The same woman.
"Do you know where David is?"" I asked.
Rebecca shook her head.
"I haven't spoken to him in years. But I still have his old phone number.""
Daniel took out his phone.
"Give it to me.""
She wrote it on a piece of paper.
Daniel stepped outside to make a call.
Rebecca looked at me.
"Michael, I need you to understand something.""
"What?""
"Vanessa didn't just want Tyler. She wanted to become the person everyone depended on.""
I frowned.
"Meaning?""
"She made sure I needed her financially. She made sure David looked dangerous. Then she became Tyler's only stable parent.""
I thought about the way Vanessa treated Maya.
The way she insisted on being called Mommy.
The way she became furious whenever Maya mentioned Elena.
Rebecca continued.
"She did the same thing with you.""
I stared at her.
"She made you believe Elena had abandoned you. Then she became the woman who helped you recover.""
I looked toward the window.
For nine years, I had believed Vanessa had saved me.
Perhaps she had simply created the situation from which she later rescued me.
Daniel returned.
"I reached David.""
Rebecca stood up so quickly that her chair scraped against the floor.
"What did he say?""
"He wants to meet.""
"When?""
"Tomorrow morning.""
Rebecca covered her mouth.
"After all these years?""
Daniel nodded.
"He also has something he wants us to see.""
We left Rebecca's house with copies of her documents.
When we reached the car, Maya was sleeping against Elena's shoulder.
Elena looked up.
"Did you find anything?""
I nodded.
"More than we expected.""
I explained the conversation.
Elena listened without interrupting.
When I finished, she looked at Maya.
"That poor boy.""
I nodded.
"He's another child Vanessa has been using.""
Elena gently brushed Maya's hair away from her face.
"Michael, we need to be careful. Whatever happens between us and Vanessa, Tyler shouldn't pay for it.""
I looked at her.
"You're right.""
For the first time since this nightmare began, Elena and I agreed without hesitation.
The following morning, we met David Miller at a small diner outside town.
He arrived wearing a gray jacket and carrying a black backpack.
Rebecca stood when she saw him.
For several seconds, neither spoke.
Then David looked at her.
"Hello, Rebecca.""
She began crying.
"David.""
He nodded.
"I'm sorry I disappeared.""
Rebecca shook her head.
"Don't.""
He looked toward Daniel.
"You're Michael Carter?""
"Yes.""
David sat down.
"I've been following Vanessa's situation for years.""
My stomach tightened.
"What do you mean?""
He opened his backpack.
Inside were bank statements, old court filings, and a small digital recorder.
"I knew she was doing something with money. I just couldn't prove it.""
He placed the recorder on the table.
"This is from the last conversation I had with her before I left town.""
Daniel examined it.
"How did you obtain this?""
"I recorded our conversation because she threatened me.""
He pressed play.
Vanessa's voice emerged.
"You need to stop asking questions about the money, David.""
David's recorded voice answered.
"Where did the money go?""
"That's none of your business.""
"It was our money.""
"It was family money.""
"Then why is it going into an account under Richard's name?""
A pause.
Then Vanessa said something that made my stomach turn.
"Because Richard knows how to make things disappear.""
David's voice became louder.
"Are you talking about the money from Maya's account?""
I froze.
On the recording, Vanessa went silent.
Then she said:
"Don't ever mention that little girl's name again.""
Daniel stopped the recording.
"Michael, we need a copy of this.""
David nodded.
"Take it.""
I stared at him.
"How did you know about Maya's money?""
"Because I saw the transfer.""
He removed another document.
It was a bank statement showing a transfer of $42,000.
The account belonged to Maya.
The receiving account belonged to a company registered under Richard Bell's name.
The transfer date was September 17.
Three days after Elena disappeared.
I felt my hands trembling.
"Did you report this?""
"I tried. Vanessa said the money was being used to establish a trust for the children.""
"What children?""
David shook his head.
"That's what I never understood.""
He turned the page.
The account had received additional deposits over the next several years.
Some were from Vanessa.
Some were from Richard Bell.
And one was from a company I recognized.
My own employer.
I stared at the name.
"Why would my company transfer money into this account?""
David leaned forward.
"That's the part I couldn't investigate.""
Daniel examined the statement.
"Michael, did you ever authorize your employer to make payments to a family trust?""
"No.""
David looked at me.
"Vanessa told me she had a business arrangement with someone at your company.""
I shook my head.
"Who?""
He removed a final document.
A company payment authorization.
The signature at the bottom was mine.
I stared at it.
It was almost identical to the signature on the adoption application.
But I had never seen it before.
Daniel placed both documents side by side.
"These may have been produced using the same source.""
I felt sick.
Then David spoke.
"There's another reason I wanted to meet you.""
He looked toward the diner entrance.
A young boy was standing outside.
Tyler.
He was holding a school backpack.
Rebecca immediately stood.
"Tyler?""
The boy looked frightened.
"Mom?""
Rebecca rushed toward him.
"Sweetheart, what are you doing here?""
Tyler looked at David.
His eyes widened.
Then he whispered:
"Are you my dad?""
David stood slowly.
For several seconds, he couldn't speak.
Then he nodded.
"Yes, buddy.""
Tyler looked at Rebecca.
"Mom said he didn't want me.""
Rebecca knelt.
"She was wrong.""
Tyler's face crumpled.
"Then why didn't he come?""
David crouched in front of him.
"Because I was told I wasn't allowed to.""
Tyler began crying.
And just as David reached out to hug him, a car screeched into the diner parking lot.
Vanessa stepped out.
Her face was furious.
She marched toward the entrance.
"Tyler! Get away from him!""
The boy froze.
Vanessa pointed at David.
"You have no right to be near my son!""
David stood.
"He isn't your son.""
Vanessa's eyes flashed.
Then she looked directly at me.
"Michael, if you let him take Tyler, I'll make sure Maya never sees Elena again.""
Daniel quietly placed his phone on the table.
Vanessa noticed.
"What are you doing?""
He looked at her.
"Recording a threat.""
For the first time, Vanessa seemed genuinely uncertain.
Then she turned toward Tyler.
"Get in the car. Now.""
Tyler looked at David.
Then at Rebecca.
May you like
And finally, he did something nobody expected.
He stepped behind his father.
