Chapter 7: The Witness Who Remembered Everything

For several seconds, I couldn't move.

I read Robert Hayes's message again.

Then I turned toward Daniel.

"My mother was there?""

Daniel lowered his phone.

"That's what the message says.""

I shook my head.

"She told me she barely knew what happened that night.""

Daniel didn't answer immediately.

Instead, he asked Mrs. Collins whether the hospital could preserve the original incident records and any surviving audio files.

She nodded.

"I'll submit an archival preservation request. But it will need legal review before anything can be released.""

Daniel handed her his business card.

"Please contact me directly.""

We left the records department at 11:38 a.m.

Maya was sitting on a bench near the elevators, drawing in a small notebook.

She looked up when she saw us.

"Did you find Mommy?""

I crouched beside her.

"Not yet, sweetheart. But we're going to.""

"Did you find out why she left?""

I hesitated.

"She didn't leave because she stopped loving you.""

Maya studied my face.

"Then why did she leave?""

"Someone made her believe she couldn't stay.""

"Vanessa?""

I nodded.

Maya looked down at her drawing.

"Grandma too?""

I couldn't lie.

"We're trying to understand what happened.""

She closed the notebook.

"Everybody knew except me.""

I pulled her into a hug.

"I know.""

She pressed her face against my shoulder.

"That's not fair.""

"No," I whispered.

"It isn't.""

Daniel received another message while we were walking toward the parking garage.

"Robert wants to meet us.""

"When?""

"Today. He says there's something he needs to show us in person.""

I checked the time.

"Where?""

"An office near the hospital.""

I called my mother.

She answered on the second ring.

"Michael?""

"Why were you at Mercy Hospital the night Maya was born?""

Silence.

Then a shaky breath.

"Who told you that?""

"Robert Hayes.""

My mother began crying.

"Michael, please don't judge me until you hear everything.""

I closed my eyes.

"Did you stand beside Vanessa while she tried to get Elena removed from the hospital?""

"I didn't understand what she was doing.""

"Did you know she was claiming to be Maya's aunt?""

"She told me the nurses needed a family contact.""

"Mom, Vanessa isn't related to Elena.""

"I know that now.""

"Did you know she tried to change Maya's guardianship records?""

My mother started sobbing.

"I swear I didn't know about that.""

I pressed my fingers against my forehead.

"Then why were you there?""

She whispered something.

I couldn't hear her.

"What?""

"I was afraid Elena would take Maya away.""

I felt my stomach turn.

"Why?""

"Vanessa told me Elena had been seeing another man. She said she was planning to leave you and take the baby.""

"That was nine years ago. You still haven't told me who this man supposedly was.""

My mother hesitated.

Then she said, "Vanessa showed me a photograph.""

"What photograph?""

"A picture of Elena with someone outside a restaurant.""

I stopped walking.

"Who was the man?""

"I don't know.""

"Did you recognize him?""

"No.""

"Then how did you know it was an affair?""

"I didn't.""

I stared at the concrete floor.

My mother continued.

"Vanessa said she had been investigating Elena for months. She said she wanted to protect you.""

I ended the call.

I couldn't listen anymore.

An hour later, Daniel and I met Robert Hayes at a small office near the hospital.

He was in his late sixties now, with silver hair and a slight limp.

He stood when we entered.

"Michael Carter?""

"Yes.""

He shook my hand.

"I'm sorry this has taken so long.""

We sat down.

Robert placed a thick brown envelope on the table.

"I kept a copy of the original incident report because something about that night never felt right.""

"Why didn't you come forward?""

He looked uncomfortable.

"At the time, I was told the matter had been resolved. A hospital administrator said the family had reached an agreement.""

"What agreement?""

"That the visitor would no longer interfere with the mother's care.""

Daniel leaned forward.

"Who told you that?""

Robert opened the envelope.

"Your mother.""

I stared at him.

"My mother?""

He nodded.

"She came to my office the next morning. She said she had spoken with Elena and everything was fine.""

I felt sick.

"Did you speak with Elena?""

"No. I called the room, but she had already been discharged.""

He removed several photocopied pages.

"Here's the original report.""

The first page was familiar.

The second contained Elena's handwritten complaint.

But the third page was new.

It was a statement recorded by Robert at 12:16 a.m.

He read it aloud.

"Visitor Vanessa Carter stated that the biological mother was emotionally unstable and had threatened to leave the hospital with the infant. Visitor claimed she had been asked by the father to intervene.""

Daniel frowned.

"Did you verify that claim?""

"Yes. I called Michael's room.""

I looked up.

"You called me?""

Robert nodded.

"You answered.""

I tried to remember.

"That night?""

"Yes. You said you had never authorized Vanessa to make medical decisions for Maya.""

My heart started pounding.

"Then why wasn't she removed?""

Robert looked down.

"Because your mother arrived and told us she was the grandmother. She said Elena had been experiencing emotional problems and that Vanessa was helping the family.""

I felt something break inside me.

"Did you believe her?""

"At the time, yes.""

Robert turned to the last page.

"This is the part I wanted you to see.""

It was a handwritten note from a hospital administrator.

*Visitor claims father has signed guardianship authorization. Original document not verified. Do not permit further access without parental consent.*

Below it was another note.

*Visitor requested that incident report be amended to remove reference to disputed guardianship. Request denied.*

Daniel leaned back.

"Someone tried to alter the report.""

Robert nodded.

"Vanessa came back two days later. She wasn't alone.""

"Who was with her?""

He looked directly at me.

"Your mother.""

I closed my eyes.

Robert continued.

"Your mother asked me to remove the incident report because she believed it would hurt your family.""

"Did you?""

"No.""

He opened the envelope again.

"There's one more thing.""

He removed a small photograph.

It showed Vanessa standing outside the maternity ward.

Beside her was my mother.

Both women were looking toward the camera.

But behind them, partially visible through the glass doors, was another person.

A man wearing a hospital employee badge.

Robert pointed to him.

"That's the administrator who handled the guardianship request.""

Daniel examined the photograph.

"What's his name?""

Robert read the name printed on the back.

"Richard Bell.""

I frowned.

"Why does that matter?""

Robert hesitated.

"Because Richard Bell wasn't just a hospital administrator.""

He paused.

"He was married to Vanessa's older sister.""

The room went silent.

I stared at the photograph.

Vanessa had not acted alone.

She had family connections inside the hospital.

And the woman I had trusted with my newborn daughter had been trying to gain legal control over her before I even understood what was happening.

My phone vibrated.

A message from Elena.

*I'm outside the hospital. Maya's ready whenever you are.*

I stood.

Robert gathered his papers.

"Michael, one more warning.""

I turned.

"What's that?""

He looked uncomfortable.

"Your wife wasn't the only person who contacted me about that night.""

"Who else?""

Robert lowered his voice.

"Someone called me three months ago. They asked whether I still had the original report.""

"Who?""

He slid a business card across the table.

It belonged to a private investigator.

May you like

And on the back, written in black ink, were three words.

*Find Elena Carter.*
