Chapter 14: The Man Behind the Forgery

My uncle Peter had always been the quietest man in our family.

He rarely argued.

He never raised his voice.

At Christmas, he sat at the end of the table and listened while everyone else talked.

He was the kind of man who remembered birthdays, brought groceries to elderly relatives, and fixed broken appliances without being asked.

I had trusted him.

That was what made his involvement so difficult to accept.

Daniel read his letter aloud.

Michael, I know you will hate me. You have every right to. But Vanessa did not begin this scheme because she wanted to steal your daughter. She began it because she believed she was protecting a secret that could destroy her entire family.

I interrupted.

"What secret?""

Daniel continued.

Richard Bell was not merely Vanessa's brother-in-law. He had been involved in a financial arrangement with our family for years. When Elena discovered that money was being moved through accounts connected to Maya, she threatened to expose everything.

I stared at the letter.

"Why would Elena know about the money?""

Daniel looked at me.

"Because she may have been the original account holder.""

I remembered the trust agreement.

The one that named Elena as the original grantor.

Peter's letter continued.

Vanessa told me Elena had discovered the account and intended to report Richard. She said Richard would lose his business, Tyler would lose his home, and everyone involved would be investigated.

I shook my head.

"That still doesn't explain the fake paternity test.""

Daniel turned the page.

The next paragraph did.

Richard had been struggling financially. Vanessa believed that if he could establish a legal connection to Maya, he could claim an interest in the family trust. She told me it was temporary. She said it would protect the money until the legal situation was resolved.

I felt sick.

"So she tried to make Richard Maya's father for money?""

Daniel nodded slowly.

"That's what the letter suggests.""

I continued reading.

I helped her because I believed Elena had already agreed to leave. I knew the adoption papers were questionable, but I believed Vanessa would eventually correct everything.

I slammed my hand against the table.

"She had nine years!""

Daniel remained silent.

I continued reading.

I paid for the original DNA test because I wanted to know whether Richard was telling the truth. When I discovered that Michael was the biological father, I confronted Vanessa. She told me the test was irrelevant because the legal documents were already in motion.

The letter ended with an address.

Peter wanted to meet.

Daniel looked at me.

"We should arrange it through the attorneys.""

I nodded.

"Do whatever you need to do.""

Two days later, Peter agreed to meet us in a conference room at Daniel's office.

He arrived wearing the same brown jacket he had worn to my father's funeral.

When he saw me, he stopped.

"Michael.""

I didn't stand.

"Sit down.""

He obeyed.

For several seconds, he looked at his hands.

Then he said, "I am sorry.""

I laughed bitterly.

"That's all?""

"No.""

"Then explain why you helped Vanessa.""

Peter swallowed.

"Because I believed I was protecting the family.""

"You helped her steal money from my daughter.""

"I didn't know the full amount.""

"You witnessed forged adoption papers.""

"I thought they were temporary.""

"You knew the paternity report was fake.""

Peter closed his eyes.

"Yes.""

I leaned forward.

"Did you know Elena never abandoned Maya?""

He nodded.

"Yes.""

The room went silent.

I stared at him.

"Then why didn't you tell me?""

Peter's eyes filled.

"Because Vanessa told me she would destroy your life if I did.""

"How?""

"She had financial records. She knew about some business transactions involving your father.""

I froze.

"My father?""

Peter nodded.

"Your father had invested in a small property development company years ago. Richard Bell managed some of the accounts.""

Daniel leaned forward.

"Was that investment connected to Northstar Family Holdings?""

Peter looked surprised.

"Yes.""

I felt the room tilt.

My father had died before Maya was born.

His investment had supposedly been lost after a business dispute.

My mother had told me the money was gone.

But now I was learning that his money might have funded the very structure Vanessa had used to steal from my daughter.

"How much did my father invest?""

Peter looked down.

"Two hundred and forty thousand dollars.""

I stared.

"Where did it go?""

"Into the original family trust.""

Daniel opened his laptop.

"Who was the beneficiary?""

Peter hesitated.

Then he said:

"Elena.""

I looked at him.

"Why Elena?""

"Because your father believed she was the only person in the family who would protect the money for the next generation.""

My throat tightened.

"Did my mother know?""

Peter nodded.

"She helped establish the account.""

I thought about the ten thousand dollars Vanessa had given her.

The money she had accepted three days after Elena disappeared.

"Did Mom know what Vanessa was doing?""

Peter shook his head.

"Not everything. But she knew the money was connected to the trust.""

"Why did she accept it?""

"She was afraid of losing the house.""

I looked at him.

"Was that the price?""

Peter nodded.

"Vanessa promised to keep your mother financially secure if she supported the adoption petition.""

I sat back.

The entire family had become a chain of compromises.

One person lied to protect another.

One person accepted money.

Another forged a document.

And every time someone could have stopped it, they chose silence.

Daniel asked the question I had been avoiding.

"Peter, why did Vanessa suddenly change the trust three weeks ago?""

Peter looked at him.

"Because Richard was planning to move the remaining money overseas.""

Daniel leaned forward.

"How much remained?""

"About three hundred thousand dollars.""

I stared.

"Three hundred thousand?""

Peter nodded.

"Vanessa discovered that Richard had been moving money without telling her. She became frightened.""

"Why?""

"Because she knew the trust was about to be investigated.""

Daniel exchanged a glance with me.

"Did Vanessa intend to return the money to Elena?""

Peter shook his head.

"She wanted to negotiate.""

"Negotiate what?""

"She wanted Elena to sign a statement saying she had voluntarily created the trust and approved every transfer. In exchange, Vanessa would give her the money.""

I felt my stomach tighten.

"She wanted Elena to take responsibility for the fraud.""

Peter nodded.

"Exactly.""

I stood.

"Where is Richard now?""

Peter looked at Daniel.

"He left the country.""

Daniel immediately contacted the relevant authorities.

But Peter wasn't finished.

"There is one more thing.""

I turned.

"What?""

He reached inside his jacket and removed a small flash drive.

"Vanessa gave me this several months ago. She told me to destroy it if anything went wrong.""

Daniel took it.

"What is on it?""

"Recordings. Emails. Financial documents.""

I stared at the drive.

"Why didn't you give it to the police?""

Peter looked ashamed.

"Because one of the recordings contains my voice.""

I said nothing.

Daniel secured the drive and arranged for a forensic examination.

Two days later, we sat together as the files were opened.

There were dozens of emails.

Scanned documents.

Audio recordings.

And one video.

The video showed Vanessa sitting across from Richard Bell in a restaurant.

Richard was speaking.

"The account is exposed. We need to move the remaining money.""

Vanessa shook her head.

"Not until Elena signs.""

Richard laughed.

"She'll never sign.""

"Then we'll make her.""

"How?""

Vanessa leaned forward.

"Her daughter.""

Richard stared at her.

Vanessa continued.

"She'll do anything to protect Maya.""

I felt my hands clench.

Richard asked, "And Michael?""

Vanessa smiled.

"Michael believes whatever I tell him.""

Then Richard said something that changed everything.

"There's still the original agreement with your sister.""

Vanessa's smile disappeared.

"Don't mention that.""

Richard leaned closer.

"She knows the truth about Tyler. If she talks, everything collapses.""

Vanessa looked directly at him.

"She won't talk.""

The video ended.

I turned toward Daniel.

"What original agreement?""

He opened another folder.

The document was titled:

*Northstar Family Trust — Founding Agreement.*

The original beneficiaries were listed as Elena Carter, Maya Carter, and Tyler Miller.

But there was a handwritten condition beneath their names.

If either child was removed from the care of their biological mother without lawful consent, the trustee would lose all authority and the assets would revert to the original beneficiaries.

I stared.

"Then Vanessa had no right to control the money.""

"Correct," Daniel said.

I looked at Peter.

"Did she know about this condition?""

Peter nodded.

"That's why she tried to get the adoption approved.""

The adoption wasn't simply about becoming Maya's mother.

It was about creating a legal fiction that would allow Vanessa to control the trust.

And the false paternity declaration had been another attempt to achieve the same result.

My phone rang.

Elena.

I answered.

"What's wrong?""

She was crying.

"Michael, the police are here.""

My heart dropped.

"Why?""

"They have a warrant.""

"For what?""

Elena hesitated.

Then she whispered:

"They're saying I stole money from the trust.""

I stood so quickly my chair fell backward.

"That's impossible.""

"Michael, they found documents with my signature.""

Daniel was already reaching for his jacket.

"Where are you?"" I asked.

"At home.""

"Don't sign anything. Don't answer questions without your lawyer.""

She began sobbing.

"Michael, I didn't do this.""

"I know.""

Then she said something that made my blood run cold.

"They found the original trust agreement in my bedroom.""

I looked at Daniel.

The agreement had been stored in our office.

The original documents were supposed to be secured by the forensic accountant.

Someone had planted a copy.

May you like

Someone wanted Elena arrested.

And Vanessa was still one step ahead of us.
