Chapter 12: The Account With Four Names
Vanessa didn't leave quietly.
She stood in the diner parking lot shouting that David was violating a custody arrangement, that Rebecca was unstable, and that I was helping two people who had spent years trying to destroy her.
Several customers stopped to watch.
One woman pulled out her phone.
Daniel remained calm.
"Mrs. Carter, you need to stop threatening people.""
Vanessa pointed at him.
"You're a lawyer. You know exactly what you're doing.""
"Yes. And I suggest you speak to your own attorney before making this worse.""
She turned toward Tyler.
"Get in the car!""
Tyler tightened his grip on David's jacket.
"No.""
Vanessa stared at him.
"What did you say?""
Tyler's voice trembled.
"I want to talk to my dad.""
Vanessa's face twisted.
"I raised you!""
David stepped between them.
"And nobody is denying that you helped care for him. But you don't get to decide that his father never existed.""
Vanessa looked at me.
"You're going to let this happen?""
I stared at her.
"You've spent nine years telling children their parents abandoned them.""
She shook her head.
"You don't understand.""
"Then explain the forty-two thousand dollars.""
Her face went still.
I continued.
"The transfer into Richard Bell's company. The money Rebecca received. The forged adoption papers. The hospital records.""
Vanessa looked around.
People were watching.
She lowered her voice.
"Come home, Michael.""
"No.""
"Please. We can talk privately.""
"You've had nine years to talk privately.""
She looked toward Maya's empty seat in the car.
"Where is she?""
"With Elena.""
Vanessa's expression hardened.
"You're allowing that woman to take my daughter?""
I felt something cold move through me.
"She's not your daughter.""
Vanessa slapped me.
The sound echoed across the parking lot.
For a moment, nobody moved.
Then Daniel stepped between us.
"That's enough.""
Vanessa looked at her hand.
Then at me.
"You're making a terrible mistake.""
I touched my cheek.
"No. I made one nine years ago.""
She turned and stormed toward her car.
Before driving away, she rolled down the window.
"Ask Richard what happened to the rest of the money.""
Then she sped out of the parking lot.
Daniel looked at me.
"We need to find Richard Bell.""
David nodded.
"I know where he works.""
Three hours later, we were sitting in a conference room at the office of a forensic accountant Daniel had hired.
The accountant's name was Susan Miller.
She wasn't related to Rebecca, although the coincidence made everyone smile briefly.
Susan spread the documents across the table.
"The money trail is more complicated than a simple withdrawal.""
She opened a laptop.
"Here's the original $42,000 transfer from Maya's education account.""
A line appeared on the screen.
Maya Carter Education Savings.
Then:
Richard Bell Consulting Services.
Then:
Northstar Family Holdings.
I leaned forward.
"What is Northstar?""
Susan clicked another file.
"A private company registered nine years ago. It was used to receive money from several sources.""
"Which sources?""
She displayed four names.
Maya Carter.
Rebecca Miller.
Margaret Carter.
And Vanessa Carter.
I stared at the screen.
"Why are all four names connected to the same account?""
Susan explained.
"The original company account received money from several personal accounts. Some transfers were legitimate deposits. Others appear to have been made without the account holders' knowledge.""
Daniel leaned forward.
"Can you identify the unauthorized transfers?""
Susan nodded.
"Based on the records we have, yes.""
She opened a spreadsheet.
The first transfer was Maya's $42,000.
The second was a $10,000 payment to my mother.
The third was a $5,000 payment to Rebecca.
Then came a series of smaller transfers.
Some were labeled consulting fees.
Others were marked family assistance.
I stared at the numbers.
"How much altogether?""
Susan typed.
The total appeared.
$186,400.
I felt sick.
"Where did it go?""
"Some went to Richard Bell. Some went into accounts associated with Vanessa. And approximately $73,000 was used to purchase assets.""
"What assets?""
Susan opened another document.
A property address appeared.
It was a small commercial building on the outskirts of town.
The property had been purchased through Northstar Family Holdings.
I recognized the address.
It was the building Vanessa had always described as her father's old investment property.
"She told me that building belonged to her family.""
Susan shook her head.
"The purchase was funded primarily through the Northstar account.""
Daniel examined the ownership records.
"Who owns the company?""
Susan clicked another tab.
"That's interesting.""
She displayed the registered directors.
Vanessa Carter.
Richard Bell.
And a third name.
My name.
I stared at the screen.
"What?""
Susan nodded.
"You're listed as a silent director.""
"I never agreed to that.""
Daniel leaned closer.
"Is there a signature?""
Susan opened the registration document.
There it was.
My signature.
Again.
I shook my head.
"That's forged.""
Susan nodded.
"It appears inconsistent with several verified signatures from your employment records.""
I looked at Daniel.
"Can we prove it?""
"An independent handwriting examination can help. We should also obtain the original filings.""
Susan continued.
"There's another issue. Northstar Family Holdings owns a life insurance policy connected to Maya.""
I froze.
"What kind of policy?""
"An investment-linked policy. It was established when Maya was less than a month old.""
"Who is the beneficiary?""
Susan looked at the screen.
"Vanessa Carter.""
I couldn't breathe.
"Why would my daughter have a life insurance policy naming Vanessa as beneficiary?""
Susan didn't speculate.
"We need the original application and underwriting documents.""
Daniel asked another question.
"Was the policy active?""
Susan nodded.
"Until recently.""
"What happened?""
She opened a final record.
"Someone requested a beneficiary change three weeks ago.""
I felt my stomach drop.
"To whom?""
Susan turned the screen toward us.
The new beneficiary was listed as:
*Tyler Miller.*
I stared.
Why would Vanessa change the beneficiary from herself to Tyler?
Was she trying to protect him?
Or was there another reason?
Daniel read the policy notes.
"There's a reference to a trust amendment.""
Susan opened the attachment.
The document was dated three weeks earlier.
It transferred certain assets from Northstar Family Holdings into a trust.
The beneficiaries were Maya and Tyler.
But the trustee was Richard Bell.
I looked at the names.
"Why would she suddenly put both children into a trust?""
Susan scrolled down.
"Because the original trust is scheduled for dissolution.""
"Why?""
She pointed to the final paragraph.
A court order had been issued requiring Northstar to provide a full accounting of its assets.
The date was November 15.
Thirteen days away.
I looked at Daniel.
"Who requested the accounting?""
He examined the court reference.
Then his expression changed.
"Michael, this wasn't initiated by Elena.""
"Who was it?""
Daniel turned the document toward me.
The petitioner was a woman named Rebecca Miller.
She had filed a financial disclosure request in connection with her custody case.
And the court had granted it.
Rebecca had accidentally opened the door to the entire financial structure.
Susan leaned forward.
"There's one more document you should see.""
She opened an archived trust agreement.
The first page listed the beneficiaries.
Maya Carter.
Tyler Miller.
The second page listed a third person.
Elena Carter.
I stared.
"Why is Elena included?""
Susan shook her head.
"I don't know yet.""
Then she turned to the final page.
A handwritten amendment had been added.
It stated that Elena would receive control of the trust if she returned to the United States and established contact with Maya before Maya's eighteenth birthday.
I looked at Daniel.
"What does that mean?""
He read the clause carefully.
"It means someone anticipated Elena returning.""
I turned toward Susan.
"Who wrote the amendment?""
She pointed to the signature.
Richard Bell.
But beneath his name was another signature.
Vanessa Carter.
I felt a chill.
"Why would Vanessa give Elena control of the trust?""
Susan enlarged the final paragraph.
Then she looked at me.
"Because according to this agreement, Elena was the original owner of the funds.""
The room fell silent.
I stared at the document.
The money hadn't simply been stolen from Maya.
It had been moved into a structure designed to hide where it came from.
And Vanessa had apparently created a legal arrangement that would eventually return control to Elena.
It made no sense.
Unless Vanessa had never intended to keep the money permanently.
Unless the money had been meant for something else.
Daniel read the last sentence aloud.
"The trust becomes irrevocable upon the death or permanent incapacity of the original grantor.""
I looked up.
"Who is the original grantor?""
Susan pointed to the first page.
Elena Carter.
My blood turned cold.
"Elena never created this trust.""
Daniel closed the folder.
"Then someone used her identity to establish it.""
My phone rang.
Elena.
I answered immediately.
"What's wrong?""
Her voice was shaking.
"Michael, Vanessa just came to the house.""
I stood up.
"Where's Maya?""
"She's with me. We're safe.""
"What did Vanessa want?""
Elena took a breath.
"She brought a document and said she wanted to make a deal.""
"What deal?""
"She said she'd give me the money, the house, and everything she had taken.""
I frowned.
"Why?""
Elena's voice broke.
"Because she said if I didn't sign the document, she'd make sure Maya never found out who her biological father really was.""
I froze.
"What?""
There was a long silence.
Then Elena whispered:
"Michael, there's something I never told you about the night Maya was born.""
My grip tightened around the phone.
"What is it?""
"Vanessa told me that the baby I was holding wasn't the only child involved in her plans.""
I felt my heart pounding.
"What are you saying?""
Elena began crying.
"Michael, I found out something about Maya's birth records. Something that could change everything.""
I looked at Daniel.
He was already standing.
Elena continued.
"Your daughter wasn't supposed to be registered under your name that night.""
May you like
The line went silent.
And for the first time, I wondered whether the woman who had stolen nine years of my daughter's life had also tampered with the truth about her birth.
