Chapter 8: The Photograph in the Envelope

Elena was standing beside a black sedan when we reached the hospital entrance.

For a moment, neither of us moved.

Nine years.

Nine years of birthdays, school mornings, scraped knees, Christmas mornings, and all the ordinary moments that make up a childhood.

She had missed all of them.

Her hair was shorter than I remembered, and there were faint lines around her eyes.

But I recognized her immediately.

"Michael," she whispered.

I stopped a few feet away.

"Elena.""

Her eyes moved toward Maya.

The little girl stood beside me, clutching her stuffed rabbit.

Elena's lower lip trembled.

"Hi, sweetheart.""

Maya didn't answer.

Elena nodded, accepting the silence.

"I brought something for you.""

She opened her handbag and removed a small pink envelope.

Inside was a photograph of Maya as a newborn.

On the back, Elena had written:

The day I first held you, I promised I would never stop loving you.

Maya studied it.

"Is that really me?""

Elena smiled through her tears.

"Yes. You were so tiny.""

"Did I cry a lot?""

"You screamed every time the nurses tried to put you down.""

Maya almost smiled.

Then she looked at Elena.

"Why didn't you come back?""

Elena crouched.

"I tried, baby. More times than I can explain.""

"Vanessa said you didn't want me.""

Elena closed her eyes.

"I know she said that.""

"She said you were selfish.""

"I made mistakes, sweetheart. But leaving you was never one of the choices I wanted to make.""

Maya looked at her for a long time.

Then she asked, "Can I hug you?""

Elena broke down.

"Of course.""

Maya stepped forward.

Their first embrace lasted only a few seconds.

But I watched Elena hold her daughter as though the entire world had finally returned something that had been stolen.

I looked away.

Daniel approached us.

"Elena, we need to discuss something.""

She wiped her cheeks.

"What's happened?""

I showed her Robert's photograph.

She recognized the man immediately.

"Richard Bell.""

"You know him?""

Elena nodded.

"He was Vanessa's brother-in-law. He visited me twice while I was pregnant.""

"Why?""

"He said Vanessa was worried about me. He asked questions about my medical history and whether I had ever received psychiatric treatment.""

Daniel frowned.

"Did you answer?""

"I told him it was none of his business.""

She looked at the photograph again.

"After that, I started receiving strange letters.""

"What kind of letters?"" I asked.

"Letters saying I wasn't a suitable mother. One claimed someone had reported me for neglect.""

I felt my stomach tighten.

"Who sent them?""

"I never knew. But I kept everything.""

She opened the trunk of her car.

Inside was a small storage box.

She lifted it carefully and placed it on the ground.

"I brought these because I thought you might finally believe me.""

The box contained old letters, bank statements, printed emails, and several photographs.

Daniel helped her sort through them.

One envelope contained a hospital bill.

Another contained a copy of the original flight reservation.

Then I found a photograph of Vanessa standing outside our old apartment.

The date was printed on the bottom.

August 14.

The same photograph Elena had sent me earlier.

But this one showed something different.

Vanessa wasn't alone.

A man stood beside her.

He was holding a folder.

I recognized him from Robert's photograph.

Richard Bell.

On the back, Elena had written:

Vanessa introduced him as someone who could help with Maya's paperwork.

I stared at the image.

"Did you know he worked at Mercy Hospital?""

"No. I found that out much later.""

Daniel examined the photograph.

"Do you have any correspondence involving him?""

Elena nodded.

She handed him a folded letter.

It was addressed to her.

The sender's name was Richard Bell.

The letter was dated September 12.

Two days before Maya's birth.

Mrs. Carter, I understand you are concerned about certain family arrangements. My sister-in-law has asked me to help ensure the child's interests are protected.

I read the next sentence.

If you cooperate, we can avoid unnecessary legal complications.

I looked at Elena.

"What did you do?""

"I ignored it.""

She took another paper from the box.

"This arrived the following week.""

It was a bank statement.

A new account had been opened using Elena's personal information.

The account was connected to an address she had never lived at.

Daniel examined the details.

"This needs to be reported.""

Elena nodded.

"I tried. But when I went to the bank, they told me the account had already been closed.""

"Who closed it?""

She pointed to the last page.

The closure authorization carried Vanessa's signature.

I felt my blood pressure rise.

"How did she have your information?""

Elena looked at me.

"She had access to the apartment. She had access to our mail. And she had access to the documents I kept in the bedroom.""

I remembered Vanessa helping us organize the house.

She had even offered to scan important documents for safekeeping.

I had thanked her.

Now every kind gesture looked different.

Daniel's phone rang.

He stepped away to answer it.

When he returned, his expression was serious.

"Michael, we have a problem.""

"What now?""

"Vanessa has filed an emergency application seeking temporary restrictions on Maya's contact with Elena.""

I stared at him.

"On what grounds?""

"She claims Elena has been emotionally manipulating Maya and that the sudden contact could destabilize her.""

I looked toward my daughter.

Maya was sitting beside Elena, examining the photographs.

"Can she do that?""

"She can request it. Whether a court grants it is another matter.""

I shook my head.

"She's not Maya's biological mother.""

Daniel nodded.

"But she may argue that she has acted as a psychological parent for nine years. We need to respond properly.""

Elena stood.

"She can't do this again.""

I looked at her.

"Again?""

Elena reached into the storage box and removed a final envelope.

"This is why I came back.""

She handed it to me.

Inside was a printed message.

It had been sent from Vanessa's old email account.

The date was September 16, nine years earlier.

The message was addressed to an unknown recipient.

The child is safe. The mother is gone. Michael believes the situation is settled. Please confirm the transfer.

I read it twice.

"Transfer of what?""

Elena shook her head.

"I don't know.""

Daniel examined the message header.

"There's an account identifier here.""

He took a photograph.

Then he looked at me.

"This may connect to the money your mother mentioned.""

I felt cold.

"Forty-two thousand dollars?""

"Possibly. But we need the bank records.""

Elena looked down.

"There was something else in the original message.""

"What?""

She pointed to the final line.

Once the adoption process is complete, everything will be easier.

I stared at her.

"Adoption?""

Elena nodded slowly.

"I never agreed to any adoption.""

My phone rang.

Vanessa.

I answered.

"What?""

Her voice was calm.

Too calm.

"Michael, I think you've made a terrible mistake.""

"What do you want?""

"I want you to come home.""

"Why?""

"Because there's something you need to see.""

"I've seen enough.""

She laughed softly.

"No, you haven't.""

I heard papers moving in the background.

Then she said:

"I found the original adoption application.""

My entire body went rigid.

"What application?""

"The one you signed nine years ago.""

"I never signed an adoption application.""

Vanessa paused.

Then she delivered the sentence that made my heart stop.

"Then why does it have your signature, Elena's signature, and your mother's witness statement?""

The call ended.

I looked at Daniel.

He had heard everything.

"She's bluffing," I said.

But my voice lacked conviction.

Daniel shook his head.

"Maybe. But we need to find out.""

I turned toward Elena.

She was already crying.

"Michael, I never signed anything.""

Maya looked up from the photographs.

"What's an adoption?""

Nobody answered immediately.

And then Daniel's phone vibrated.

An email had arrived from the county family court.

The subject line read:

*NOTICE OF HISTORICAL ADOPTION PETITION — CARTER FAMILY.*

Attached was a document dated nine years earlier.

The petitioner was Vanessa Carter.

The child was Maya Carter.

And the consent section contained three signatures.

Mine.

May you like

My mother's.

And Elena's.
