Chapter 10: The Father of Both Girls

I read the final line again.

Then I read it a third time.

*Biological father: Marcus Hale.*

My name.

Not Richard's.

Not some stranger's.

Mine.

I looked at Richard, expecting him to laugh or admit the document was fabricated.

He didn't.

Instead, he calmly straightened his jacket.

“Now you understand why Emily became dangerous.””

I couldn't take my eyes off the report.

“How?””

Richard pulled out a chair and sat down without asking permission.

“Your daughter was born first. Sophie was born forty-seven minutes later. Both deliveries were handled by Dr. Whitmore.””

I looked toward Vanessa.

She was crying silently.

Richard continued.

“Emily and Vanessa were half-sisters, but neither knew the full extent of their family history until shortly before the deliveries. Their biological father had left behind a complicated inheritance arrangement. Both women were entitled to a share.””

I frowned.

“What does that have to do with the babies?””

“Everything.””

Richard opened his folder and removed another document.

“Emily and Vanessa were pregnant within weeks of each other. Their pregnancies were both complicated. The hospital had a private arrangement with a medical research foundation. The foundation was interested in studying hereditary conditions within the family.””

Rachel stepped forward.

“That's not what the hospital records say.””

Richard looked at her.

“Sit down.””

“No.””

He sighed.

“Fine. Then listen.””

He turned back toward me.

“Emily had a medical emergency after delivery. Vanessa was sedated. During the confusion, Dr. Whitmore altered the newborn identification records.””

I felt sick.

“Why?””

“Because someone offered him money.””

“Who?””

Richard smiled faintly.

“Me.””

Vanessa covered her mouth.

I stood so quickly that my chair fell backward.

“You switched two newborn babies for money?””

Richard didn't flinch.

“I arranged a private exchange of information. The babies were never in danger.””

I grabbed the edge of the table.

“They were children!””

“And they were raised in loving homes.””

I laughed bitterly.

“You call this loving?””

Richard glanced at Vanessa.

“Your wife knew what was happening.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“Not at first.””

Richard ignored her.

“After the exchange, Emily began asking questions. She noticed that Maya's medical records didn't match the family history she knew. She confronted Whitmore. He admitted there had been an administrative error.””

Rachel interrupted.

“He admitted there was a deliberate switch.””

Richard turned sharply.

“Be quiet.””

Rachel stepped closer.

“You paid him. You gave him instructions. And you threatened his family when he tried to confess.””

Richard's expression hardened.

“You have no idea what you're talking about.””

“I have the original hospital recordings.””

For the first time, Richard looked uncertain.

I turned toward Rachel.

“What recordings?””

She opened her handbag and removed a small memory card.

“Emily asked me to preserve everything. The hospital had security cameras in the neonatal corridor. The footage was never supposed to be released, but I copied it before the files were erased.””

Richard stood.

“Give me that.””

Officer Reynolds, who had remained near the hallway, immediately stepped forward.

“Mr. Cole, sit down.””

Richard stared at him.

“You have no jurisdiction over private medical records.””

“That's not how this works.””

Richard slowly sat.

I looked at Vanessa.

“Did you know Maya was my biological daughter?””

She nodded through her tears.

“Yes.””

“When?””

“About three years ago.””

I felt something inside me collapse.

“Three years?””

She wiped her face.

“Richard showed me the report before we got married.””

I stared at her.

“So when you married me, you already knew Maya was mine?””

“Yes.””

“And Sophie?””

Vanessa began sobbing.

“I knew she was Emily's.””

I couldn't speak.

For three years, Vanessa had known that the girl she treated like an inconvenience was her biological niece.

And the daughter she had raised was Emily's child.

Yet she had chosen to punish Maya.

“Why?”” I finally asked.

Vanessa looked at me.

“Because I couldn't bear it.””

“Couldn't bear what?””

“That Emily had everything.””

I stared at her.

“She was dead.””

“But she still won!””

Vanessa's voice cracked.

“She had you. She had Maya. She had the life I wanted. And even after she died, everyone kept loving her.””

I stepped away.

“You had a daughter who needed you.””

“I know.””

“No. You don't.””

Vanessa covered her face.

“I thought if I could make Maya leave, I could finally have a family that belonged to me.””

I looked at Richard.

“And you?””

He adjusted his cuff.

“I wanted the inheritance protected.””

“What inheritance?””

Richard removed a final document.

“Your daughters are the biological heirs to a family trust established by Emily and Vanessa's father. The trust was created before either woman was born.””

I read the amount.

Nearly eighteen million dollars.

The room fell silent.

Richard continued.

“Emily discovered that the trust would transfer to the girls when they turned eighteen. The money was supposed to be divided equally between them.””

I looked at the paperwork.

“So you switched them to control who inherited what?””

“Not exactly.””

“What does that mean?””

Richard smiled.

“The trust requires both girls to be raised in separate households until their eighteenth birthdays. If the arrangement is disturbed, the trustees can freeze the assets while the family dispute is investigated.””

I finally understood.

The separation hadn't been an accident.

It had been designed to keep two sisters apart.

And Vanessa had spent years making sure Maya never felt welcome enough to remain in the house.

I looked at her.

“You wanted her gone before she could turn eighteen.””

Vanessa didn't answer.

Richard leaned forward.

“Now that you know the truth, we can reach an agreement. You keep Maya. Vanessa keeps Sophie.

Everyone moves forward. The trust remains untouched.””

I stared at him.

“You think I'm going to negotiate over my children?””

“I'm offering you a reasonable solution.””

“No.””

Richard's smile disappeared.

“Think carefully, Marcus. You have no idea how expensive this fight could become.””

I picked up the DNA report.

“Then I suppose I'll have to spend whatever it takes.””

Richard stood.

“This isn't over.””

Officer Reynolds stepped between us.

“Actually, Mr. Cole, I think it is for tonight.””

Richard walked toward the door.

Before leaving, he turned to Vanessa.

“You should have stayed with the original plan.””

She looked at him.

“What plan?””

He smiled coldly.

“The one where Maya disappeared before her eighteenth birthday.””

Then he walked out.

Vanessa began screaming.

I stood frozen.

Because suddenly I understood why Maya's suitcase had been thrown onto the floor.

The vacation hadn't been about excluding my daughter.

May you like

It had been about getting her away from the house before something happened.

And somewhere in the middle of all those lies, my wife had become part of a plan to make my daughter disappear.
