Chapter 9: The DNA Result That Changed Everything

I opened the front door.

Rachel hurried inside.

“Lock it,” she said.

I did.

She placed the envelope on the dining table and looked toward Vanessa.

“You shouldn't be here.””

Vanessa stepped backward.

“Rachel, you don't understand.””

“I understand perfectly. I've spent six years watching you destroy that woman's family.””

Vanessa's face twisted.

“You were supposed to keep quiet.””

Rachel laughed bitterly.

“I kept quiet because you threatened my son.””

I looked between them.

“What is happening?””

Rachel turned toward me.

“Mr. Hale, I need you to understand something. Emily's medical records were altered, but not in the way you think.””

I opened the envelope.

Inside were several official-looking documents.

One was a laboratory report.

Another was a hospital incident record.

The final page was a handwritten statement signed by Rachel.

I looked at the laboratory report first.

The names were partially covered by a black marker.

“Whose results are these?””

Rachel pulled out a second copy.

“Your wife asked me to keep the original.””

She pointed to the first line.

“Emily Hale.””

Then the second.

“Marcus Hale.””

I swallowed.

“What does it say?””

Rachel took a breath.

“The test was not designed to establish Maya's paternity. It was a comparison of Emily's DNA with yours.””

I frowned.

“Why?””

“Because Emily had discovered that someone had switched the samples in her medical file. She suspected that the hospital had been given a false blood sample under her name.””

I looked down.

The report showed a genetic comparison.

At the bottom was a handwritten note.

Biological relationship confirmed.

I read it twice.

“What does this mean?””

Rachel's voice softened.

“It means Emily was trying to prove that someone had substituted her DNA sample with another person's.””

I looked up.

“So the test doesn't tell us whether I'm Maya's father?””

“No.””

I felt a strange mixture of relief and anger.

“Then why did Vanessa say it did?””

Rachel turned toward her.

“Because she wanted you to believe that.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“That's not true.””

Rachel pulled another document from the envelope.

“This is the original request for the test.””

The signature at the bottom belonged to Dr. Whitmore.

The authorization line contained another name.

Vanessa Cole.

I looked at her.

“You requested the test?””

She didn't answer.

Rachel continued.

“Vanessa asked Dr. Whitmore to compare two samples. One belonged to Emily. The other belonged to a woman whose identity was concealed.””

I felt my stomach tighten.

“Who was the other woman?””

Rachel looked at Vanessa.

“Her.””

The room went silent.

I turned toward my wife.

“Why would you compare your DNA to Emily's?””

Vanessa shook her head.

“Because Richard told me to.””

Rachel placed another paper on the table.

“It showed that the two women were biologically related.””

I stared at the report.

“Related how?””

Rachel's voice dropped.

“Emily and Vanessa were half-sisters.””

I looked at Vanessa.

She was crying now.

“No,” I whispered.

Rachel nodded.

“Emily discovered that they shared the same biological father. Their mothers had kept the truth hidden for decades.””

Vanessa sank into a chair.

I stared at her.

“You knew?””

She nodded.

“Richard found out first. He used the information to control me.””

“Why didn't you tell me?””

“Because I hated Emily.””

The answer came so quietly I almost didn't hear it.

Rachel continued.

“Emily had been trying to contact Vanessa before she died. She wanted to tell her the truth and make peace.””

Vanessa covered her face.

“She didn't want peace. She wanted to take everything from me.””

“What everything?””

Vanessa lowered her hands.

“Richard had told me Emily was trying to claim part of his business. He said she was threatening to expose our family.””

Rachel shook her head.

“That wasn't true.””

I looked at the documents.

“Then what was Emily actually trying to do?””

Rachel pulled out a final envelope.

“Give Maya the truth about her family.””

Inside was a birth certificate amendment request.

It had never been processed.

I read the document carefully.

Emily had requested that Maya's family medical history be corrected because she had discovered a serious hereditary condition in her biological father's family.

I looked up.

“Who was the father?””

Rachel hesitated.

“Emily never told me directly.””

“Then why is this document important?””

“Because she included a separate note.””

Rachel handed me a folded page.

Emily's handwriting filled the paper.

Marcus,

If you ever discover that Vanessa and I are sisters, please don't let that change how you see Maya.

There is something I never told you about the night she was born.

I felt my chest tighten.

I continued reading.

You were told that I had an emergency during delivery. That was true. But there was another emergency.

The hospital lost track of the baby for forty-seven minutes.

I stopped.

“What?””

Rachel nodded slowly.

“It happened.””

I looked at her.

“You were there?””

“Yes.””

“Why didn't anyone tell me?””

“Because Dr. Whitmore said the baby had been transferred to another room.””

I stared at her.

“Was she?””

Rachel shook her head.

“No.””

My mouth went dry.

“What happened to Maya?””

Rachel glanced toward the staircase.

Then back at me.

“Another newborn was brought into the nursery during that period. There was a mistake in the identification records.””

I couldn't breathe.

“Are you saying my daughter was switched at birth?””

Rachel nodded.

“That's what Emily suspected.””

Vanessa suddenly stood.

“That's enough.””

Rachel ignored her.

“Emily spent months investigating. She believed Maya was biologically connected to someone in the hospital records. Someone with enough influence to make the paperwork disappear.””

I looked at the photograph of Emily.

Then at the document in my hand.

“Who was the other baby?””

Rachel opened the final page.

It contained two names.

One was Maya Hale.

The other was a girl named Sophie Cole.

My heart stopped.

I looked at Vanessa.

She shook her head violently.

“No. No, that's impossible.””

Rachel's voice trembled.

“The hospital records suggest that the two babies may have been switched.””

I stared at her.

“Are you telling me Maya might be your daughter?””

Vanessa sank back into the chair.

Rachel nodded.

“And Sophie might be Emily's biological daughter.””

For a long moment, nobody moved.

Then I heard a familiar voice from the doorway.

“That's enough, Rachel.””

Richard Cole stood inside the open entrance.

He held a black leather folder beneath his arm.

His eyes moved from the documents to Vanessa.

Then to me.

“You've all been asking the wrong questions,” he said.

I stepped in front of the table.

“Get out.””

Richard smiled.

“You really don't understand, do you?””

“Leave my house.””

He placed the folder on the table.

“Those babies were never switched accidentally.””

Vanessa began shaking.

Richard looked directly at her.

“Tell him.””

She covered her mouth.

“Richard, please.””

He ignored her.

“Six years ago, Emily discovered the truth. But she made one mistake.””

I felt my heartbeat pounding.

“What mistake?””

Richard opened the folder.

He removed a photograph.

It showed Emily holding two newborn babies.

And beneath the photograph was a handwritten note.

One of these girls belongs to Vanessa. The other belongs to me.

Richard looked at me.

“Emily didn't die before she could tell you the truth, Marcus.””

He paused.

“She died because she was about to expose what we did to those two children.””

Then he placed another document on the table.

It was a DNA report.

This time, the names were visible.

*Maya Hale.*

*Sophie Cole.*

And beneath them, one final line:

*Biological relationship: Full sisters.*

Vanessa began screaming.

I stared at the report.

Because if Maya and Sophie were full biological sisters, then the secret wasn't simply that the babies had been switched.

It meant Richard had been lying about something much bigger.

May you like

And the next name on the report was one I had never expected to see.

*Biological father: Marcus Hale.*
