Chapter 14: The Man Behind Every Lie

The old Cole estate stood at the edge of town, surrounded by iron fencing and enormous oak trees.

I arrived with Officer Reynolds and two investigators.

Maya and Sophie remained at my mother's house with Rachel.

Daniel had insisted on coming.

I almost refused.

But he looked me in the eye and said, “Emily deserves someone from her family to see this through.””

I didn't argue.

The estate's front gate was open.

That frightened me more than a locked one would have.

Richard stood on the front steps.

Beside him was an elderly man wearing a dark gray suit.

Dr. Whitmore.

He looked smaller than I remembered.

His hands trembled.

Richard smiled when he saw us.

“Marcus. You came.””

I didn't respond.

Whitmore looked at me.

“I'm sorry.””

I laughed bitterly.

“You'll have to do better than that.””

Richard opened the front door.

“Come inside. There are things you need to understand.””

Officer Reynolds stepped forward.

“We'll be conducting this meeting with officers present.””

Richard smiled.

“Of course.””

We entered a large study.

On the walls hung photographs of the Cole family.

I recognized Richard in several.

But one photograph caught my attention.

It showed a much younger Whitmore standing beside Thomas Cole.

And between them stood Richard as a baby.

I pointed.

“You're his father.””

Whitmore lowered his eyes.

“Yes.””

Richard walked toward the fireplace.

“My mother was married to Thomas. But when she became pregnant, she was already involved with Samuel.””

Whitmore closed his eyes.

“Richard, stop.””

“No. We've spent enough years pretending.””

Richard turned toward me.

“Thomas knew the truth. He raised me anyway. But when he discovered that I wasn't his biological son, he changed the inheritance documents.””

I stared at him.

“So you arranged the hospital switch because you wanted the money.””

Richard laughed.

“Money was part of it.””

“What else?””

He walked toward a cabinet and removed a folder.

“Thomas had a condition. A neurological disease that had affected several members of his biological family. He wanted to know whether the children carried the same genetic markers.””

Whitmore interrupted.

“That isn't true.””

Richard ignored him.

“Thomas wanted the girls tested. Emily refused. She believed the information would be used against them.””

“And you switched them?””

Richard nodded.

“I wanted to control the results.””

I stared at him.

“You deliberately separated two newborns from their mothers.””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because if the girls were raised in separate households, nobody would compare their medical histories. Nobody would notice the inconsistencies.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“You ruined Emily's life.””

Richard looked at him.

“Emily ruined her own life when she started asking questions.””

Whitmore suddenly spoke.

“She was going to report us.””

Richard turned.

“You were supposed to handle that.””

“I didn't know you were going to kill her.””

The room went silent.

Richard stared at him.

“What did you just say?””

Whitmore's face crumpled.

“You told me to disconnect the monitoring equipment. You said she would recover.””

I felt my stomach turn.

“Richard?””

He looked at me.

“I didn't touch her.””

Whitmore began crying.

“You told me she wouldn't wake up.””

Officer Reynolds stepped closer.

“Dr. Whitmore, I need you to repeat that.””

Richard's face changed.

“You're making a mistake.””

Whitmore shook his head.

“I've made enough.””

He reached into his jacket and pulled out a small recording device.

“I recorded our conversations.””

Richard lunged toward him.

Officer Reynolds caught his arm.

“Don't move!””

The device fell to the floor.

I picked it up.

Whitmore looked at me.

“Your wife knew I was involved. She begged me to help her. I told Richard everything because I was afraid.””

He wiped his eyes.

“But before she died, Emily gave me one final instruction.””

“What?””

“To make sure Maya and Sophie were protected.””

I stared at him.

“Why didn't you?””

He lowered his head.

“Because Richard threatened my family.””

Officer Reynolds took the recording device.

One of the investigators began examining the contents of the folder.

Then Richard suddenly laughed.

“You think this solves everything?””

He looked at me.

“Even if I go to prison, you won't get the inheritance.””

I didn't care.

“Keep it.””

Richard's smile faded.

“What?””

“I don't want your money.””

He shook his head.

“You don't understand. It's your family's money.””

“No. It's the money you used to destroy my family.””

I stepped closer.

“My daughter spent years believing she wasn't wanted. My wife died without knowing whether her daughters would ever be reunited. You don't get to stand here and talk about inheritance.””

Richard's face hardened.

“You're making a sentimental mistake.””

“Maybe.””

I looked directly at him.

“But at least I'll be able to look my daughters in the eye.””

Whitmore suddenly raised his head.

“There's something else.””

We turned.

He reached for another document.

“Emily knew the medication had been altered. But she also discovered that the hospital had received a second payment after her death.””

“From Richard?””

Whitmore shook his head.

“From Vanessa.””

I frowned.

“What?””

He nodded.

“She paid to have the original neonatal records destroyed.””

I stared at him.

“Why would she do that?””

Richard laughed.

“Because she knew the truth.””

I turned toward the investigator.

“Can you explain?””

He examined the document.

“The payment was made through an account registered to Vanessa Cole. The transaction occurred four days after Emily's death.””

I felt sick.

Vanessa hadn't simply been manipulated.

She had participated.

Richard looked at me.

“Now you see why she wanted Maya gone.””

I shook my head.

“No. I see why you wanted everyone to believe that.””

He smiled.

“Ask her.””

My phone rang.

Vanessa.

I answered.

“Where are you?””

Her voice was shaking.

“Marcus, I need to see you.””

“Why?””

“Because Richard lied about one thing.””

I looked at him.

“What thing?””

Vanessa began crying.

“The original hospital records weren't destroyed.””

I straightened.

“Where are they?””

“In my possession.””

My heart began pounding.

“Why didn't you give them to the police?””

“Because they contain something that could change everything.””

“What?””

She whispered:

“The original birth records show that Maya and Sophie weren't the only babies involved in the exchange.””

I stared at the phone.

“What do you mean?””

Vanessa took a shaky breath.

“There was a third baby.””

I looked at Whitmore.

His face went completely white.

Richard stopped smiling.

Vanessa continued.

“Marcus, the third baby was born the same night.””

“Whose child?””

She whispered the answer.

“Yours.””

The line disconnected.

I looked at Richard.

For the first time, he seemed genuinely frightened.

Officer Reynolds turned toward him.

“Mr. Cole, you're going to need to explain that.””

Richard said nothing.

Whitmore began shaking.

Then Daniel looked at me.

“Marcus, I think we need to find Vanessa before Richard does.””

May you like

Because somewhere in the middle of this nightmare, another child had disappeared.

And if Vanessa was telling the truth, my family was about to become even more complicated.
