Chapter 5: The Name on the Birth Certificate

The silence that followed was so complete I could hear a car passing on the street.

I looked at Vanessa.

“Were you married when we met?””

She shook her head.

“Daniel is lying.””

Daniel laughed bitterly.

“I'm tired of protecting you.””

“You promised!””

“I promised Emily. Not you.””

I turned toward him.

“Who was her husband?””

Daniel hesitated.

Then he gave me a name.

“Richard Cole.””

I recognized it immediately.

Richard Cole was a successful real estate developer who owned several commercial properties in our city. He had been mentioned in local newspapers more than once.

He was also the man who had sponsored Vanessa's children's private school.

“Why would Richard have anything to do with Emily?””

Daniel looked at Maya.

“Because Emily worked for his company before she married you.””

I felt my stomach tighten.

That part was true.

Emily had worked as an accountant for a small property management firm. I knew she'd left after a disagreement with the owner.

I had never known the owner was connected to Richard.

Vanessa crossed her arms.

“None of this proves anything.””

I looked at her.

“Then why are you here?””

“Because Daniel contacted me.””

Daniel shook his head.

“You contacted me first.””

Vanessa's eyes flashed.

“Don't you dare.””

Officer Reynolds stepped closer.

“I'm going to need everyone to remain calm. Mr. Cole, if you have information regarding a possible crime, we can arrange formal statements.””

Daniel nodded.

Vanessa, however, looked toward the road.

“Marcus, can we talk privately?””

“No.””

“Please. This isn't something Maya needs to hear.””

Maya wiped her cheeks.

“I'm already hearing it.””

Vanessa looked irritated.

“Go inside, Maya.””

I immediately stepped forward.

“She stays with me.””

My daughter took my hand.

“Dad, I want to know.””

I looked down at the wooden box.

The old brass lock had a small circular opening.

I held out my hand.

“Vanessa. The key.””

She hesitated.

Then she placed it in my palm.

The key fit perfectly.

A soft click sounded.

Inside were three objects.

A photograph.

A folded document.

And a small envelope with Maya's name written across it.

Maya reached for the envelope.

I handed it to her.

She opened it carefully.

Inside was a note.

My beautiful girl,

If you're reading this, something happened that I prayed would never happen. I want you to remember that love is not measured by blood alone.

The man who raises you, protects you, and chooses you every day is your father.

But you deserve the truth about where you came from.

When you're ready, look at the photograph.

Maya pulled out the photograph.

It showed Emily standing outside a hospital.

Beside her was a man holding a newborn baby.

The man was young, clean-shaven, and wearing a wedding ring.

Maya stared at the photograph.

“Dad?””

I looked.

The man wasn't me.

But I recognized him.

It was Richard Cole.

Vanessa immediately reached for the picture.

“Give me that.””

I moved it away.

“Don't touch her belongings.””

Daniel leaned forward.

“Turn it over.””

Maya did.

On the back, Emily had written a date.

It was two days after Maya's birth.

Beneath the date were six words.

Richard knows. Marcus does not.

I felt as if someone had pulled the floor from beneath me.

Vanessa shook her head.

“This proves nothing.””

I turned toward her.

“Why were you involved?””

She looked at Daniel.

“Tell him.””

Daniel's jaw tightened.

“Emily discovered that Richard had been having an affair with her. When she became pregnant, he offered her money to keep quiet.””

Maya looked confused.

“Was Richard my father?””

Daniel nodded slowly.

“Emily believed he might be.””

I looked down at the document inside the box.

It was a copy of a private agreement.

The paper was old, but the signatures were clear.

Richard Cole.

Vanessa Cole.

And a third signature.

Emily Hale.

The agreement stated that a substantial sum had been transferred to Emily shortly before Maya's birth.

My hands began to shake.

“Did you take money from Richard?””

Daniel shook his head.

“No. Emily refused it.””

“Then why is her signature here?””

“Because she was trying to prove Richard had paid someone else to keep the affair hidden.””

I studied the document.

There was another page folded beneath it.

This one contained a handwritten statement.

I began reading.

I, Emily Hale, confirm that I have never agreed to surrender parental rights or conceal the identity of my child's biological father.

The statement was dated six years earlier.

The month before Emily died.

At the bottom was a witness signature.

Rachel Bennett.

The nurse.

I looked at Daniel.

“Why didn't you tell me?””

He rubbed his forehead.

“Because Emily made me promise to wait until Maya was old enough. She didn't want her childhood destroyed by a scandal.””

“Then why did you give Vanessa the box?””

Daniel's eyes filled.

“I didn't.””

Everyone turned toward Vanessa.

She took a step backward.

Officer Reynolds noticed.

“Ma'am, I'd like you to stay where you are.””

Vanessa laughed nervously.

“This is absurd. Daniel gave me the box.””

Daniel shook his head.

“You came to my apartment three days ago. You said you had a message from Emily.””

Vanessa's expression changed.

“You're confused.””

“No. You told me Marcus had discovered the letter. You said if I didn't help you find the box, Richard would make sure I lost everything.””

I looked at her.

“Richard knows about this?””

Vanessa didn't answer.

My phone rang.

The caller ID displayed an unfamiliar number.

I answered.

A man's voice spoke.

“Marcus Hale?””

“Yes.””

“This is Richard Cole.””

I glanced at the photograph.

“What do you want?””

“I believe you have something that belongs to me.””

I almost laughed.

“Your name is on a document in my daughter's property.””

“Then you understand why we need to discuss this privately.””

“No. I don't.””

Richard sighed.

“Emily made some serious mistakes before she died. I would hate for Maya to suffer because of them.””

I tightened my grip on the phone.

“Don't threaten my daughter.””

“I'm not threatening anyone. I'm offering you a chance to keep this matter from becoming public.””

“Public?””

“Think about your daughter. School. Friends.

The internet. Imagine what people will say when they learn her mother had an affair.””

I looked at Maya.

She was listening.

I lowered my voice.

“You have ten seconds to stop talking about my daughter.””

Richard chuckled.

“Then perhaps you should ask Vanessa what happened to the original DNA test.””

I froze.

“What DNA test?””

But the line had already disconnected.

I turned toward Vanessa.

She was staring at the ground.

Daniel whispered, “Oh, God.””

I stepped closer.

“What DNA test?””

Vanessa said nothing.

I raised my voice.

“Vanessa!””

She finally looked up.

And her answer destroyed the last piece of trust I had left.

“Richard paid for a DNA test before Emily died.””

I swallowed.

“What did it say?””

Vanessa's lips trembled.

May you like

Then she looked directly at Maya.

“It said Richard wasn't your father.””
