Chapter 6: The Test That Disappeared
Nobody spoke.
Maya stood beside me, holding the photograph so tightly that the edges bent beneath her fingers.
“Then who is?”” she whispered.
Vanessa looked away.
I stepped forward.
“You just told us Richard wasn't her father. So why did you spend six years acting as if Emily had betrayed me?””
Vanessa rubbed her forehead.
“Because there was another test.””
My heart began pounding.
“What other test?””
She swallowed.
“The first test wasn't conclusive. Richard didn't trust the results. He ordered another one.””
Daniel looked at her in disbelief.
“You told me there was only one.””
“I didn't tell you everything.””
“Of course you didn't.””
I turned toward Vanessa.
“Where is the second test?””
She shook her head.
“I don't know.””
“Don't lie to me.””
“I'm not!””
Maya stepped forward.
“Did Mom know?””
Vanessa's face softened.
For the first time, I saw something resembling shame.
“Yes.””
“Then why didn't she tell me?””
“Because she was afraid.””
“Of what?””
Vanessa looked at me.
“Of losing you.””
I stared at her.
“What does that mean?””
Vanessa sat down on the porch steps.
“Emily believed the second test would prove you weren't Maya's biological father. She thought you'd leave.””
Maya began crying again.
I immediately turned toward her.
“Baby, listen to me.””
She shook her head.
“What if she was right?””
I crouched in front of her.
“Your mother never needed to prove anything to me. And neither do you.””
“But what if—”
“Maya, look at me.””
She raised her eyes.
“You are the best thing that ever happened to me. Nothing on a piece of paper changes that.””
She threw her arms around my neck.
I held her tightly.
Behind us, Vanessa began speaking again.
“Marcus, you need to understand something. Emily wasn't innocent in all this.””
I slowly stood.
“Don't.””
“She kept secrets.””
“She was dying.””
“She was manipulating everyone.””
I turned toward Officer Reynolds.
“Please document everything she's saying.””
Vanessa jumped to her feet.
“You can't do that!””
“Watch me.””
Officer Reynolds asked Daniel to step aside and began taking statements.
My mother brought Maya inside.
I stayed on the porch.
I needed answers.
“Vanessa, how long have you known about the DNA tests?””
She looked at the street.
“Six years.””
“And when did you marry me?””
“Three years ago.””
“So you knew about all of this before our wedding.””
“Yes.””
“Why didn't you tell me?””
She gave a bitter laugh.
“Because I loved you.””
I stared at her.
“Love doesn't involve stealing a child's memories.””
Her eyes filled.
“You don't know what I sacrificed.””
I almost couldn't believe what I was hearing.
“You threw my daughter's suitcase onto the floor this morning.””
“I was trying to avoid a scene.””
“You took her mother's letter.””
“I was protecting her.””
“You removed her belongings from her bedroom.””
“I was trying to help you move forward!””
I pointed toward the wooden box.
“Then explain this.””
Vanessa looked at it.
Her face hardened.
“Emily wanted that box found. She knew this would happen eventually.””
“What?””
“She wanted you to discover the truth.””
“Then why did you steal it?””
Vanessa hesitated.
“Because the document inside could destroy my family.””
I studied her.
“What does your family have to do with Emily?””
She looked toward Daniel.
Then she whispered something that made him stagger backward.
“Richard is Sophie's biological father.””
I blinked.
“What?””
Daniel looked sick.
Vanessa continued.
“I was married to Richard when Sophie was born. Tyler too. Richard knew about both children. But when he started seeing Emily, everything changed.””
Daniel shook his head.
“You told me Richard was traveling for work.””
“He was.””
“With Emily?””
Vanessa said nothing.
I felt the entire story shifting beneath my feet.
Emily and Richard.
Vanessa and Richard.
Two families connected by a secret nobody had been willing to speak aloud.
But something still didn't make sense.
“Why did Emily sign that agreement?””
Vanessa looked at me.
“Because she wanted to expose Richard.””
“Expose him for what?””
“Fraud.””
Daniel lowered his head.
I stepped closer.
“Explain.””
Vanessa took a long breath.
“Richard had been using employees' personal information to create false property transactions. Emily discovered irregularities in the accounts. She confronted him. He offered her money to stay quiet.””
“And she refused.””
“Yes.””
“Then what?””
Vanessa's voice dropped.
“Richard threatened to destroy her.””
My hands clenched.
“Did he have anything to do with her death?””
Vanessa didn't answer.
I moved closer.
“Did he?””
She looked toward the police officer.
“I don't know.””
Daniel suddenly spoke.
“She knew more than she was telling us.””
Vanessa glared at him.
“Shut up.””
“No. I'm done.””
Daniel stepped toward me.
“Emily called me two nights before she died. She said someone had entered her hospital room while she was asleep.””
I felt my blood run cold.
“Who?””
“She didn't see his face. But she recognized his voice.””
“Whose?””
Daniel looked at Vanessa.
“She said it sounded like Richard.””
Vanessa shook her head.
“That's impossible.””
Daniel continued.
“She asked me to take Maya away from the house if anything happened to her.””
I stared at him.
“Why didn't you?””
His eyes filled with tears.
“Because the next morning, Richard called me. He told me he had proof I was involved in the financial fraud. He threatened to send me to prison.””
“So you abandoned Maya?””
Daniel lowered his head.
“I was afraid.””
I wanted to hit him.
Instead, I looked toward the living room window.
Maya was sitting beside my mother, holding Emily's letter.
She had lost her mother.
Then she had lost the uncle who promised to protect her.
And now she was discovering that the people around her had built their lives on secrets.
I wasn't going to let anyone take anything else from her.
I turned toward Vanessa.
“Where is the original DNA test?””
She shook her head.
“I don't know.””
“Where is the second one?””
“I never saw it.””
“Then why did Richard mention it?””
Vanessa looked confused.
I pulled out my phone and called the number Richard had used.
It went straight to voicemail.
I left a message.
“Richard, this is Marcus Hale. I want every medical and legal document involving Emily and Maya. If you have nothing to hide, you'll provide them.””
I ended the call.
Then another phone began ringing.
It was Daniel's.
He looked at the screen and went pale.
“Who is it?”” I asked.
He didn't answer.
I took one step closer.
“Daniel. Who is calling?””
He turned the phone toward me.
The caller ID displayed:
*RICHARD COLE.*
Daniel answered on speaker.
“Hello?””
Richard's voice filled the porch.
“You've made a serious mistake.””
Daniel closed his eyes.
“What do you want?””
“I want the box.””
“It's not yours.””
Richard laughed.
“Then perhaps I should remind you what happens to people who betray me.””
I stepped closer to the phone.
“Richard, this is Marcus.””
There was a pause.
Then Richard spoke calmly.
“Ah. The devoted husband.””
“Tell me what happened to Emily.””
“Nothing happened to Emily that wasn't already expected.””
My stomach twisted.
“Be careful.””
“You're the one who should be careful. You have a daughter who is about to discover that her entire childhood was built on a lie.””
I looked toward the window.
Maya was watching me.
Richard continued.
“And if you want to know who her biological father really is, stop looking at Vanessa.””
I froze.
“Who should I look at?””
His answer came quietly.
“Yourself.””
The call ended.
I stared at Daniel.
Then at the wooden box.
I had spent the entire afternoon believing I was protecting Maya from the possibility that I wasn't her biological father.
But Richard had just suggested something much worse.
I opened the box again and examined the folded document.
At the bottom, beneath Emily's signature, I noticed a line of handwriting I hadn't seen before.
It was a short instruction.
For the second test, compare Marcus's original hospital sample with Maya's.
I looked up.
“What hospital sample?””
Daniel's face went completely white.
And from inside the house, my mother screamed.
“Marcus! You need to come here!””
I ran inside.
Maya was standing beside the kitchen table, holding another photograph.
It showed Emily in her hospital bed.
Beside her stood a man wearing a doctor's coat.
On the back, Emily had written:
The man who switched the samples.
Maya looked at me.
“Dad, I know him.””
I took the photograph.
My heart stopped.
May you like
Because the man standing beside my dying wife was the same doctor who had signed my original marriage medical records.
And he was still our family doctor.
