Chapter 12: The Grandmother's Secret

I couldn't move.

The woman who had raised me, helped raise Maya, and protected Emily's final letter was now connected to the document authorizing the hospital exchange.

“Mom?””

Margaret stared at the page.

Her face had turned completely white.

“That's not possible.””

I placed the document in front of her.

“Is that your signature?””

She didn't answer.

“Mom.””

She slowly sat down.

“Yes.””

Maya looked between us.

“Grandma?””

My mother covered her face.

“I didn't know what they were doing.””

I felt something inside me break.

“You signed the authorization?””

She nodded.

“But I was told it was for medical privacy.””

Rachel stepped forward.

“Mrs. Hale, the document clearly states that you authorized the transfer of the newborn identification records.””

My mother shook her head.

“Richard told me the hospital needed a temporary guardian signature because Emily was too ill to make decisions.””

I stared at her.

“Why would you believe him?””

“Because he said it was necessary to protect the babies.””

“Which babies?””

She began crying.

“Both of them.””

Sophie stood beside Maya.

“Did you know my mother?””

My mother looked at her.

“Yes.””

“Did you know she was Emily?””

Margaret nodded.

“I knew Emily was your biological mother.””

Sophie took a step backward.

“And you never told me?””

“I couldn't.””

“Why?””

My mother looked toward me.

“Because Richard threatened Marcus.””

I felt my stomach tighten.

“What are you talking about?””

Margaret wiped her cheeks.

“Six years ago, Richard came to see me. He told me that Emily had become obsessed with the idea that the hospital had made a mistake. He said she was trying to destroy Vanessa's family.””

I shook my head.

“Emily wasn't trying to destroy anyone.””

“I know that now.””

“Then why did you sign?””

Margaret looked at the floor.

“Because Richard told me that if I didn't cooperate, he would make sure Maya was taken away from you.””

I felt sick.

“He threatened to take my daughter?””

“He said you weren't her biological father. He showed me a test result. He told me that Emily had lied to you.””

I looked at the document again.

The fake DNA report.

The altered medical records.

The forged signature.

Everything had been designed to make us doubt one another.

My mother continued.

“I was terrified. I thought if I signed, the hospital would simply correct the paperwork later. Richard promised that nothing would happen to either girl.””

Rachel shook her head.

“He lied.””

Margaret nodded.

“Yes.””

I pulled out a chair.

“Why didn't you tell me afterward?””

She began crying harder.

“Because Emily died.””

I stared at her.

“And?””

“And I thought it was over.””

My voice became quiet.

“Was it?””

She shook her head.

“No.””

I looked toward Maya.

She was standing beside Sophie, holding her hand.

I had spent years believing my mother was the one person who would never hide anything from me.

Now I understood that the family secret had been protected by nearly everyone.

Except the woman who had tried to expose it.

Emily.

My phone rang.

Dr. Whitmore.

I answered.

“Hello.””

His voice was frantic.

“Marcus, I heard that Richard was at your house.””

“He was.””

“Did he show you the documents?””

“Yes.””

“Then you need to get rid of them.””

I laughed bitterly.

“Why?””

“Because you don't understand the legal consequences.””

“I'm beginning to understand them perfectly.””

Whitmore lowered his voice.

“Your mother signed the original authorization, didn't she?””

I looked at Margaret.

“How do you know that?””

“Because I was the one who brought the document to her.””

My stomach tightened.

“You helped Richard?””

“I was pressured.””

“You switched the babies.””

“I didn't physically move them.””

“You changed their identification records!””

He began speaking faster.

“Marcus, I have a family. Richard threatened me. I had no choice.””

I looked at Rachel.

She was recording the conversation on her phone.

“Then tell me what happened to Emily.””

Whitmore went silent.

“Dr. Whitmore?””

He exhaled.

“Emily found the original records. She came to my office two days before she died. She said she was going to the police.””

“Did you tell Richard?””

“I didn't have a choice.””

“Did you change her medication?””

The silence lasted several seconds.

Then he whispered:

“I changed one dosage.””

My hand tightened around the phone.

“What?””

“I was told it would make her sleep. Nothing more.””

Rachel closed her eyes.

I could hear her breathing.

“Who told you to do it?””

Whitmore started crying.

“Vanessa.””

Vanessa, who had been standing near the hallway, suddenly looked up.

“No!””

Whitmore continued.

“She brought the medication to the hospital. She said Emily was becoming agitated and needed to rest. I didn't know what was inside.””

I turned toward Vanessa.

“You told me you weren't there.””

She shook her head.

“I didn't hurt Emily.””

Rachel stepped forward.

“Then why did you sign the medication authorization?””

Vanessa began backing away.

“I was trying to protect my family.””

I felt the same anger returning.

“Your family?””

Vanessa looked at Sophie.

“I was trying to protect you!””

Sophie shook her head.

“By hurting my mother?””

Vanessa's mouth opened.

Nothing came out.

Dr. Whitmore's voice interrupted.

“Marcus, there's something else.””

I put the phone back to my ear.

“What?””

“Emily didn't die from the medication.””

I froze.

“What are you saying?””

“The dosage was altered, but she survived the immediate reaction. Her condition deteriorated later.””

“Then what killed her?””

Whitmore began crying.

“Someone removed the emergency monitoring equipment from her room.””

Rachel covered her mouth.

I looked at her.

“Do you know about this?””

She nodded slowly.

“I suspected.””

Whitmore continued.

“I was told the equipment had malfunctioned. But when I reviewed the records, I discovered the monitoring cable had been disconnected manually.””

I stared at Vanessa.

“Who disconnected it?””

Whitmore whispered:

“Richard.””

I closed my eyes.

The man had stolen two newborn babies from their biological mothers, falsified medical records, manipulated an inheritance, and now he was connected to Emily's death.

But something still didn't make sense.

“If Richard did it, why did Vanessa help him?””

Whitmore took a breath.

“Because Richard told her that Emily had already signed away her rights to Sophie.””

Sophie began crying.

“He lied.””

“Yes,” Whitmore said.

Then he added something that made everyone go silent.

“Emily was conscious when I entered her room that night. She asked me to call Marcus. She said she had something important to tell him.””

My chest tightened.

“What did she want to say?””

“She said the babies had been switched, and she knew who had ordered it.””

“Who?””

Whitmore hesitated.

Then he whispered:

“Your mother.””

Margaret collapsed into the chair.

I stared at her.

“You knew Emily was awake?””

My mother began sobbing.

“I went to the hospital that night.””

The room seemed to tilt.

“What?””

“I went because Richard called me. He said Emily was asking questions and needed to be stopped from making a mistake.””

I stepped backward.

“You were there?””

Margaret nodded.

“I saw her.””

“Did you speak to her?””

She covered her mouth.

“Yes.””

“What did she say?””

My mother looked directly at me.

“She told me she knew I had signed the papers. She said she forgave me.””

My eyes burned.

“Then what happened?””

Margaret began shaking.

“She asked me to bring Maya to her. She wanted to hold her one last time.””

I swallowed.

“Did you?””

“No.””

“Why?””

Margaret's voice broke.

“Because Richard was standing outside the room. He told me if I went inside, he would make sure you lost Maya forever.””

I couldn't believe what I was hearing.

“You left her there?””

Margaret nodded.

“I was afraid.””

I turned away.

For six years, my mother had lived with the knowledge that Emily had died asking to see her daughter.

And she had never told me.

Maya approached her grandmother.

“Grandma, did Mom ask about me?””

Margaret began crying uncontrollably.

“Yes, sweetheart.””

“Did she know I was okay?””

“She wanted to know if you were happy. She wanted to know if you still liked the blue blanket she bought you.””

Maya's face crumpled.

I wrapped my arms around her.

My mother reached out.

“Please forgive me.””

Maya stepped back.

“I don't know if I can.””

Margaret lowered her hand.

Then Rachel's phone vibrated.

She looked at the screen.

A message had arrived from an unknown number.

She read it.

Her face drained of color.

“What is it?”” I asked.

Rachel slowly turned the phone toward me.

The message contained a photograph of the hospital's original neonatal records.

Beneath it were four words.

*Your mother wasn't the mastermind.*

A second message arrived.

*She was only following orders.*

Then a third.

*Ask Margaret who signed the payment authorization.*

I looked at my mother.

She began shaking her head.

“No. Please.””

I stepped closer.

“Mom, who paid for the switch?””

She looked toward the photograph.

Then she whispered a name.

“Your father.””

I froze.

“My father died twenty years ago.””

Margaret shook her head.

“No, Marcus. Your biological father didn't.””

She looked directly into my eyes.

“The man who raised you wasn't your biological father. And the man who ordered the exchange of Maya and Sophie was the same man who arranged for you to be adopted.””

I couldn't breathe.

Margaret reached into her handbag and removed an old photograph.

It showed a younger version of her standing beside a man.

The man looked remarkably like me.

On the back, she had written:

The first secret. 1984.

Then she said the words that changed everything.

“Marcus, Richard Cole isn't just connected to Emily's family.””

May you like

She swallowed.

“He is your biological brother.””
