Chapter 2: The Name on the Bracelet
Adrian stared at the words until they blurred.
*Do not tell him.*
The handwriting was unmistakable.
He had once spent years recognizing Elena's handwriting from across a crowded room.
The sharp little slant of the letters.
The way her lowercase “h” leaned too far forward.
The faint pressure marks where she had pressed a pen too hard.
There was no mistaking it.
Elena Carter.
Alive.
After twelve years of believing she had disappeared without looking back.
Adrian looked at Mia again.
The girl was sitting stiffly against the leather seat, both hands wrapped around her backpack. Her knees barely reached the edge of the seat.
She looked frightened.
Not of him.
Of what waited at the hospital.
“What happened to your mother today?”” Adrian asked.
Mia looked down.
“She collapsed at home.””
“Where?””
“An apartment on West Mercer.””
“Who called the ambulance?””
“I did.””
“You?””
Mia nodded.
“I heard her fall.””
Adrian's jaw tightened.
“You were alone with her?””
“Yes.””
“How long has she been sick?””
“A long time.””
“That isn't an answer.””
Mia looked up.
“You ask a lot of questions.””
“I need answers.””
“So do I.””
Her voice was quiet, but the words landed harder than he expected.
“What answers?”” he asked.
Mia swallowed.
“Why does every doctor talk to me like my mom is already dying?””
Adrian said nothing.
The city slid past the windows in ribbons of white and gold.
Mia stared at the floor.
“She used to get tired sometimes. Then she started coughing. Then she couldn't walk very far. Then she couldn't work.””
“What did she do?””
“She cleaned offices at night.””
Adrian's fingers curled against his knee.
Elena had hated sitting still.
He remembered that.
She used to joke that she could never have an office job because she'd spend the entire day looking out the window.
Cleaning offices was the last thing he could imagine her doing.
“What about relatives?”” he asked.
Mia shook her head.
“No one.””
“Grandparents?””
“Gone.””
“Uncles? Aunts?””
“I said no one.””
“You're telling me your mother has been raising you alone for twelve years?””
“Yes.””
Adrian looked at her.
“Twelve years?””
Mia nodded.
“She says she doesn't need anyone.””
Something bitter moved through his chest.
That sounded like Elena.
The driver slowed as they approached the hospital entrance.
Adrian suddenly spoke.
“Stop.””
The driver looked into the mirror.
“Sir?””
“Before the emergency entrance.””
The car pulled over.
Adrian turned to Mia.
“Wait here.””
“No.””
Her hand caught his sleeve.
“What?””
“I’m coming.””
“You should stay in the car.””
“I’m going to see my mom.””
“She may be unconscious.””
Mia's face tightened.
“I know.””
Adrian paused.
Then opened the door.
“Stay close.””
They entered the hospital.
The smell hit them first.
Antiseptic.
Plastic.
Coffee that had been left burning too long.
Mia moved faster.
“Room 417.””
Adrian followed.
A nurse at the desk looked up.
“Mia?””
“Yes.””
“You need to wait here.””
“Where is my mother?””
The nurse glanced at Adrian.
“I’m sorry. Are you family?””
“He's with me,” Mia said.
The nurse looked uncertain.
“I need to know who he is.””
Adrian stepped forward.
“Adrian Cross.””
The nurse's expression changed.
Not because she recognized him.
Because she recognized the name on Elena's chart.
“Mr. Cross?””
“Yes.””
She looked between him and Mia.
“Do you know Ms. Carter?””
Adrian's eyes sharpened.
“She knows me.””
The nurse lowered her voice.
“She's in surgery.””
Mia went pale.
“Surgery?””
“They found a severe obstruction. Her condition deteriorated quickly.””
“But she was awake.””
“She was.””
“And she told me to come back.””
“She did.””
Mia grabbed the nurse's hand.
“Is she going to die?””
The nurse took a breath.
“We're doing everything we can.””
“That means yes.””
“No,” the nurse said gently.
“It means this is serious.””
Mia's lips trembled.
“Can I see her?””
“Not yet.””
“She'll be scared.””
The nurse glanced at Adrian.
“She won't be alone.””
Mia turned toward him.
“You'll stay?””
Adrian almost asked why she expected him to.
Instead, he said, “Yes.””
The nurse disappeared through the double doors.
Mia sat in one of the plastic chairs.
Adrian remained standing.
His phone buzzed.
Daniel.
Adrian answered.
“Tell me everything about Elena Carter.””
There was a pause.
“Sir, which Elena Carter?””
“The one at St. Vincent.””
Another pause.
“Give me her date of birth.””
Adrian did.
Daniel's breathing changed.
“Sir…”
“What?””
“I found something.””
“Tell me.””
“Her medical file is partially sealed.””
“By whom?””
“I don't know yet.””
“Find out.””
“Sir, there are legal restrictions on—”
“Daniel.””
“Yes?””
“Find out.””
He ended the call.
Mia was watching him.
“Are you famous?””
Adrian blinked.
“No.””
“I think you are.””
“Why?””
“Because people keep changing their voices when you talk.””
He almost smiled.
“That's not fame.””
“What is it?””
“Fear.””
Mia considered that.
“Why would people be afraid of you?””
Adrian looked toward the operating-room doors.
“Because I usually ask difficult questions.””
Mia's eyes narrowed.
“Are you one of those rich people who buys everything?””
He looked at her.
“Apparently.””
“You bought my bike.””
“Yes.””
“You didn't even want it.””
“No.””
“Then why?””
He didn't answer immediately.
Finally, he said, “Because you needed the money.””
Mia studied him.
“You feel sorry for me.””
“No.””
The answer came too quickly.
She looked away.
Adrian regretted it immediately.
“You're right,” he said.
Mia looked back.
“I don't know what I feel.””
That seemed to surprise her.
“You're weird.””
“So I've been told.””
She smiled faintly.
It disappeared just as quickly.
“Mr. Cross?””
A second nurse approached.
Adrian turned.
“We found something in Ms. Carter's personal belongings.””
“What?””
The nurse held up a small envelope.
“This was tucked inside her wallet.””
Mia stood.
“What's that?””
The nurse looked at Adrian.
“She specifically wrote your name on it.””
Adrian took the envelope.
His pulse jumped.
His name was written across the front.
*ADRIAN CROSS.*
No address.
No explanation.
Just his name.
Mia stepped closer.
“Open it.””
Adrian stared at the envelope.
“No.””
“Why not?””
“Because it may be private.””
“But she wrote your name.””
He slipped his thumb beneath the seal.
The envelope opened with a soft tear.
Inside was a single folded sheet of paper.
Adrian unfolded it.
Three lines.
Three lines that made the floor seem to move beneath him.
*Adrian,*
*If you're reading this, then Mia has finally found you.*
His breath stopped.
He read the second line again.
Then the third.
*She deserves to know why you left us.*
Adrian's eyes lifted sharply.
“I didn't leave you.””
Mia frowned.
“What?””
He hadn't realized he'd spoken aloud.
He looked back at the paper.
There was more.
The bottom half had been torn away.
Only a fragment remained.
*And if I don't survive tonight, tell her the truth about—*
The sentence ended in ragged paper.
Mia reached for it.
“What truth?””
Adrian folded the note.
“Nothing.””
“That's not nothing.””
“Mia.””
“What was she writing?””
“I don't know.””
“You're lying.””
Adrian stared at the twelve-year-old girl.
She looked exactly like Elena when Elena knew someone was hiding something.
The same stubborn chin.
The same direct eyes.
The same refusal to accept half an answer.
A doctor rushed out of the operating area.
“Family of Elena Carter?””
Mia ran toward him.
“I’m her daughter!””
The doctor nodded.
“We've stabilized her for the moment.””
Mia's eyes filled with tears.
“Is she alive?””
“Yes.””
She covered her mouth.
“Can I see her?””
“Not yet. There's something you need to understand.””
The doctor's expression was grave.
“Your mother has been living with this condition for years. Tonight's episode is much more dangerous than we initially thought.””
“How dangerous?””
The doctor hesitated.
“She needs a transplant evaluation.””
Mia stared.
“A transplant?””
“Yes.””
“Can she get one?””
“We need to test her immediately.””
Mia looked at Adrian.
“Does that cost a lot?””
The doctor answered carefully.
“There will be significant expenses.””
“How much?””
“Mia—”
“How much?””
The doctor gave her a number.
Mia's face collapsed.
It was more money than she could imagine.
More money than the small apartment, the bicycle, the food in their kitchen, everything she and her mother had ever owned.
She whispered, “I don't have that.””
The doctor looked at Adrian.
Neither man spoke.
Mia understood anyway.
She stepped toward Adrian.
“You bought my bike.””
“Yes.””
“Can you buy this?””
Adrian's eyes hardened.
“This isn't a bicycle.””
“I know.””
“This is complicated.””
“I don't care.””
“I can't just—”
“You can.””
Her voice cracked.
“You can, because you have money.””
Adrian stared at her.
Mia wiped away her tears with the back of her wrist.
“My mom told me never to beg.””
“You aren't begging.””
“Yes, I am.””
“No.””
He stepped closer.
“You're asking.””
Mia's chin trembled.
“Then I'm asking.””
Adrian looked through the glass toward the operating room.
For twelve years, he'd convinced himself Elena's disappearance had been a choice.
He'd believed she'd taken Mia and vanished.
He'd searched.
He'd waited.
Eventually, anger had replaced grief.
Now he was learning that every assumption he'd built his life around might have been a lie.
And there was Mia.
A twelve-year-old girl who had sold her only bicycle for two hundred dollars because she thought that was what it would take to keep her mother alive.
Adrian took out his phone.
“Doctor.””
“Yes?””
“Put her on the transplant list.””
“We need testing first.””
“Do the testing.””
“Mr. Cross, there are protocols—”
“I'll cover every expense.””
The doctor stared at him.
Adrian's voice dropped.
“Whatever she needs.””
Mia looked at him.
“Why?””
He met her eyes.
Because the question he'd asked himself for twelve years had suddenly changed.
Not Why did Elena leave me?
But Why did Elena leave without telling me she had our daughter?
He opened his mouth.
Then stopped.
A nurse came running from the operating room.
“Doctor!””
Everyone turned.
“What's wrong?””
“We found another file.””
“What file?””
The nurse looked directly at Adrian.
“A confidential maternity record.””
His stomach dropped.
“The patient's old records?””
“No.””
The nurse shook her head.
“It belongs to Mia Carter.””
Mia froze.
“What about me?””
The nurse hesitated.
“There's a note attached to it.””
“What's it say?”” Adrian asked.
The nurse looked at him.
“It says the person listed as Mia's father isn't Elena's husband.””
Adrian's blood ran cold.
“Then who is?””
The nurse looked down at the paper.
Her face changed.
“I think…”
She swallowed.
“You should see this yourself.””
May you like
And when she handed Adrian the file, he saw his own full name printed beneath one word:
*Father.*
