Chapter 9: The Child They Were Afraid Of

Adrian stared at the locket.

Then at Mia.

Then back at Rebecca.

“Say that again.””

Rebecca’s smile disappeared.

“Your father isn’t who you think he is.””

Mia looked at Adrian.

“I thought you were my father.””

“You are.””

Rebecca shook her head.

“That’s not what I meant.””

A cold wind pushed through the broken warehouse doors.

Rain blew across the concrete floor.

Marcus rose slowly from behind the pillar, keeping his hands visible.

“Rebecca, enough.””

She turned toward him.

“You should have stayed dead.””

Marcus gave a bitter smile.

“I tried.””

Adrian stepped in front of Mia.

“Explain the locket.””

Rebecca held it up.

“The word ‘heir’ was never about paternity.””

Adrian’s eyes narrowed.

“Then what is it about?””

“The Cross inheritance.””

Mia stared at her.

“I don't understand.””

Rebecca looked at her.

“You're the reason your father’s entire inheritance was structured the way it was.””

Adrian’s expression hardened.

“My father changed his will because of Mia?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Rebecca's voice lowered.

“Because your father discovered something about her blood.””

Elena, barely standing beside Adrian, whispered:

“He discovered the condition.””

Rebecca nodded.

“Your mother was dying. Mia had the same inherited disorder. Victor saw an opportunity.””

Adrian looked at Elena.

“What opportunity?””

Elena’s eyes filled with tears.

“To make sure Mia became the sole successor.””

Silence.

Adrian stared.

“What?””

Rebecca opened the locket and removed the tiny photograph.

On the back was another line of handwriting.

*If anything happens to me, Mia receives everything.*

Adrian read it twice.

“Victor wrote this?””

“No,” Elena whispered.

“I did.””

Adrian looked at her.

“You created an inheritance clause?””

“I tried.””

“Why?””

“Because I knew Victor would never let you choose freely.””

Adrian’s jaw tightened.

“And you thought giving Mia the company would protect her?””

Elena shook her head.

“No.””

She looked at Mia.

“I thought it would make him afraid to hurt her.””

Mia stepped closer.

“Who?””

Elena swallowed.

“Victor.””

Adrian stared at the floor.

Everything came together too quickly.

His father had learned about Mia.

He had learned she carried the family’s genetic condition.

He had learned Elena was sick.

And instead of seeing a child, he had seen an heir.

A vulnerability.

A bargaining chip.

A threat to the empire.

Rebecca interrupted.

“Victor didn't want Mia dead.””

Adrian looked at her.

“He wanted her controlled.””

“How?””

“He created a trust.””

“For Mia?””

“Yes.””

“What kind?””

Rebecca glanced at the locket.

“One that could not be activated until she turned eighteen.””

Mia frowned.

“I’m twelve.””

“Exactly.””

Adrian's stomach tightened.

“So what happens before she turns eighteen?””

Rebecca looked at him.

“You control the trust.””

“Unless?””

“Unless you die.””

Adrian went still.

Marcus spoke.

“That's why Victor had an alternative.””

Adrian turned toward him.

“What alternative?””

Marcus stepped into the weak light.

“He created a second beneficiary.””

“Who?””

Marcus looked at Rebecca.

She didn't answer.

Adrian's voice became dangerous.

“Who?””

Marcus said:

“Rebecca.””

Mia stared.

“She gets everything?””

“Not everything,” Marcus said.

“Control.””

Rebecca’s eyes narrowed.

“That's not the whole story.””

“Then tell it.””

She remained silent.

Adrian stepped toward her.

“You spent twelve years pretending you loved me.””

“I did love you.””

“You helped my father.””

“Because I believed I could fix everything.””

“You destroyed Elena.””

“I thought I was protecting you.””

“You erased my daughter.””

Rebecca flinched.

“I know.””

“No.””

Adrian's voice broke.

“You don't know.””

He pointed at Mia.

“She grew up thinking nobody wanted her.””

Rebecca looked at the girl.

For once, there was no calculation in her face.

Only regret.

Mia spoke softly.

“Did you ever feel bad?””

Rebecca looked at her.

“Yes.””

“Then why didn't you stop?””

Rebecca's lips parted.

No answer came.

Mia nodded.

“That’s what I thought.””

A sudden siren sounded outside.

Marcus looked toward the warehouse entrance.

“Police.””

Rebecca’s men shifted.

Adrian stepped toward Mia.

“Stay close.””

Rebecca shook her head.

“They'll kill Elena if the police enter.””

Adrian looked at her.

“Who will?””

Rebecca’s face went pale.

“Not them.””

She looked toward the darkness beyond the warehouse.

“Someone else.””

A shot cracked through the air.

One of Rebecca’s men fell.

Everyone froze.

Marcus pulled Adrian behind a steel support.

“Sniper.””

Another shot struck the concrete.

Elena screamed.

Mia dropped to the floor.

Adrian crawled toward her.

“Are you hurt?””

“No.””

“Stay down.””

Rebecca crouched nearby.

“I told you.””

Adrian looked at her.

“Told me what?””

“This was never about the company.””

“What, then?””

Rebecca stared at Mia.

“They want her blood.””

Mia went pale.

“What does that mean?””

Marcus answered.

“The inherited condition.””

Adrian looked at him.

“Why would anyone want that?””

Marcus took a breath.

“Because someone has been researching it.””

“Who?””

“Your father.””

Adrian's eyes hardened.

“My father was dead.””

“He continued the research before he died.””

“For what?””

Marcus looked at Elena.

She whispered:

“A treatment.””

Adrian stared.

“What?””

Elena’s breathing became uneven.

“Victor believed the condition could be reversed.””

Mia looked confused.

“My condition?””

“Yes.””

“Then why didn't he help?””

Elena looked away.

“Because the treatment required a living donor.””

Adrian's blood turned cold.

“What kind of donor?””

Marcus answered.

“Someone with the same genetic markers.””

Adrian looked at Mia.

“No.””

Elena closed her eyes.

“They needed your daughter.””

Adrian felt every muscle in his body tighten.

“For what?””

“A procedure.””

“What procedure?””

Elena's voice dropped.

“To harvest the cells.””

Mia grabbed Adrian’s arm.

“Dad…”

He wrapped his arm around her.

“They're not touching you.””

Rebecca shook her head.

“That’s why you have to understand.””

She reached into her coat and pulled out a small flash drive.

“Victor’s research.””

Adrian stared.

“You have it?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because after he died, I realized what he had planned.””

“Why didn't you destroy it?””

“Because I thought it might save Elena.””

Adrian looked at his dying former love.

“And did it?””

Rebecca shook her head.

“No.””

Marcus moved closer.

“The treatment was never finished.””

“Then what is this?””

“A list.””

Adrian took the drive.

“A list of what?””

Marcus looked toward Mia.

“Children.””

Adrian froze.

“What children?””

“Children with the same condition.””

“How many?””

Marcus looked at him.

“Forty-three.””

Elena whispered:

“Victor wasn't studying Mia.””

Adrian looked at her.

“He was studying all of them.””

A terrible silence followed.

The sirens grew louder.

Adrian looked down at the drive.

“Where are the other children?””

Marcus shook his head.

“I don't know.””

“Find out.””

“I've been trying.””

“Then try harder.””

Mia tugged Adrian’s sleeve.

“Dad.””

He turned.

“What?””

She pointed toward Rebecca.

“She said she came to return what I was carrying.””

Adrian looked at the locket.

“What were you carrying?””

Rebecca slowly opened her hand.

A tiny memory card rested in her palm.

“Not what.””

She looked at Mia.

“Who.””

Mia frowned.

Rebecca stepped closer.

“Your mother didn't leave you a locket.””

Mia looked down.

“She left you a key.””

Adrian's eyes narrowed.

“What does it open?””

Rebecca looked at him.

“A safe.””

“Where?””

Rebecca hesitated.

“Underneath the old Cross estate.””

Adrian knew the estate.

The family mansion had been abandoned since Victor’s death.

“No one goes there.””

“Exactly.””

“What’s inside?””

Rebecca looked at Elena.

“Everything Victor hid.””

Adrian stepped closer.

“And why haven't you taken it?””

“Because I never knew the second combination.””

“What second combination?””

Rebecca looked at Mia.

“Her birthday.””

Mia's face went white.

Adrian understood.

Victor had designed the safe for his granddaughter.

The granddaughter he had hidden.

The child he had been willing to manipulate.

The child he still needed.

Then Marcus suddenly looked toward the entrance.

“It's happening.””

Adrian turned.

Police lights flashed through the rain.

But Marcus wasn't looking at them.

He was looking at the road.

A convoy of three black vehicles had appeared beyond the warehouse.

Rebecca’s face changed.

“No.””

Adrian stepped forward.

“Who are they?””

Rebecca whispered:

“Victor's old recovery team.””

“Recovery team?””

“The people he hired to retrieve the children.””

Mia gripped Adrian's hand.

A car door opened.

An older man stepped out.

He looked directly at Adrian.

Then at Mia.

Then at the silver locket.

His expression became calm.

He lifted a phone.

It rang inside Adrian’s pocket.

Unknown number.

Adrian answered.

The man outside spoke.

“You have ten minutes.””

“For what?””

“To give us the girl.””

Adrian looked at Mia.

“No.””

The man's voice remained cold.

“Then Elena dies.””

Adrian looked at the woman he had lost twelve years ago.

Then at his daughter.

Then at the approaching vehicles.

He tightened his grip around Mia’s hand.

“You picked the wrong family.””

The caller laughed softly.

“No, Mr. Cross.””

A pause.

“We picked the only family that still has something your father never found.””

“What?””

The man looked directly at Mia.

“Her blood contains the missing piece.””

He ended the call.

Mia stared at Adrian.

“What do they want from me?””

Adrian didn't answer.

Because behind the fear in her eyes, he saw something else.

The same thing Victor had seen.

Not weakness.

Not an heir.

A chance.

And somewhere beneath the old Cross estate, a safe waited for Mia to open it.

Inside was the truth Victor had killed to bury.

May you like

And Adrian suddenly realized the most dangerous secret wasn't who Mia’s father was.

It was what Mia had inherited from him.
