Chapter 8: The Warehouse at Pier Nine

Adrian read the note twice.

*BRING MIA. COME ALONE.*

His first instinct was to tear it apart.

His second was to find the person who had written it.

His third was to get Mia as far away from the hospital as possible.

But the empty bed behind him made one thing brutally clear.

None of those choices mattered anymore.

Elena was gone.

The IV tubing hung from the rail, still dripping onto the floor.

Mia stood in the doorway, staring at the bed.

“No.””

Her voice was barely audible.

Adrian turned.

“Mia.””

“No.””

She pushed past him.

“Where is she?””

The nurse grabbed her arm.

“Mia, wait—”

“Where is my mom?””

“We don’t know.””

“She was here!””

“I know.””

“You said she was safe!””

The nurse looked devastated.

“We had security outside the floor. Someone disabled one of the cameras.””

Mia looked at Adrian.

Her face was wet with tears.

“They took her.””

Adrian nodded.

“Yes.””

“Then get her back.””

“I will.””

“How?””

He looked at the note again.

“That’s what I’m going to find out.””

Mia wiped her cheeks.

“I’m coming.””

“No.””

She stared at him.

“You said we were doing this together.””

“This is different.””

“You’re going without me?””

“Yes.””

“Then they’ll know you care more about Mom than me.””

Adrian’s expression hardened.

“That’s not true.””

“Then don't leave me.””

Her voice cracked.

Adrian had no answer.

He had spent twelve years believing he had missed his chance to be a father.

Now the universe had handed him a frightened twelve-year-old girl and dared him to prove he meant it.

He crouched in front of her.

“Listen carefully.””

Mia stared at him.

“You stay with Daniel.””

“No.””

“He will protect you.””

“I don’t know him.””

“You don't need to.””

“You're my father.””

Adrian swallowed.

“Yes.””

“Then you stay with me.””

He looked at her.

There was no fear in her eyes now.

Only determination.

“You're not a burden,” he said.

“I know.””

“You're not something I have to protect from the truth.””

“I know.””

“You're my daughter.””

Mia's chin trembled.

Adrian placed one hand gently on her shoulder.

“And I'm bringing your mother home.””

Mia nodded.

“Then I'm coming.””

He closed his eyes briefly.

“Fine.””

The hospital security chief approached.

“Mr. Cross, we found the access point.””

“Where?””

“Service elevator.””

“Show me.””

They hurried down the corridor.

The security footage showed a masked figure entering the restricted cardiac floor twenty-seven minutes earlier.

The person's height.

Walk.

Posture.

Everything about them suggested familiarity with the building.

Adrian watched the footage twice.

“Stop.””

The screen froze.

The figure turned slightly.

A silver object was visible on the left hand.

A ring.

Adrian leaned closer.

A black stone surrounded by a thin silver crown.

His father's private security insignia.

But there was something else.

A second ring.

Thin gold.

Adrian recognized it instantly.

Elena's wedding ring.

Except Elena had never married him.

He looked at Mia.

“Did your mother wear a ring?””

Mia nodded.

“She kept one on a chain around her neck.””

“What did it look like?””

“Gold.””

Adrian's stomach tightened.

“Did she ever tell you where it came from?””

“No.””

He turned to the security chief.

“Find every camera between this floor and the service exit.””

“We already checked.””

“Check again.””

“Sir—”

“Again.””

The chief nodded.

A moment later, a guard rushed over.

“We found a vehicle.””

“What kind?””

“Dark SUV.””

“License?””

“Covered.””

Adrian’s phone rang.

Daniel.

“Where are you?””

“Outside the hospital.””

“Go to the west garage.””

“Why?””

“Because I have a location.””

Adrian stopped.

“Where?””

“Pier Nine.””

The same place they had traced Marcus Vale.

Adrian looked at Mia.

Daniel continued.

“There’s an abandoned warehouse there.””

“I know.””

“And Mr. Cross…”

“Yes?””

“This was just sent to your private account.””

A photograph appeared on Adrian’s phone.

Elena.

Alive.

Sitting in a chair.

Her hands were tied.

Her face was pale.

Mia saw the screen.

“Mom.””

Adrian turned the phone away.

But it was too late.

“She’s alive.””

“Yes.””

“Then let's go.””

He looked at the photograph.

In the background, beneath a broken window, he could see a large steel door.

And painted across it was an old Cross Construction logo.

His father's company.

Adrian's face hardened.

“Get the car.””

They left through the private entrance.

Daniel was waiting beside a black sedan.

His expression changed when he saw Mia.

“Sir—”

“She stays with me.””

Daniel nodded.

As the car pulled away, Adrian studied the photograph again.

“Did you trace when this was taken?””

“Eight minutes ago.””

“By whom?””

“Unknown.””

“Then somebody wanted us to see it.””

Daniel looked at Mia through the rearview mirror.

“That's what worries me.””

Mia frowned.

“What?””

Adrian answered.

“They wanted us to come.””

Mia hugged her backpack.

“Because of Mom?””

“Yes.””

Daniel drove faster.

Rain hammered the windshield.

The city lights faded behind them.

Pier Nine was on the industrial edge of the city, where old warehouses stood between rusted shipping containers and abandoned rail lines.

Adrian's phone vibrated.

Another message.

*ONE CAR. ONE HOUR. NO POLICE.*

He showed Daniel.

“Can you track the sender?””

“No.””

“Then get our people nearby.””

“I thought they said no police.””

“I don't care.””

Daniel nodded.

“We'll keep them out of sight.””

Mia looked at Adrian.

“What if they hurt her because we brought someone?””

Adrian answered immediately.

“They won't.””

“How do you know?””

“I don't.””

She looked down.

At least he wasn't lying.

The car stopped several yards from the warehouse.

Adrian stepped out.

Mia followed.

“You stay here.””

She shook her head.

“No.””

“Mia.””

“I'm not waiting in a car while my mom is in there.””

Daniel looked at Adrian.

“Sir.””

Adrian considered the warehouse.

Then Mia.

“Stay behind me.””

She nodded.

They crossed the wet pavement.

The warehouse door was unlocked.

Adrian pushed it open.

Darkness.

A single light hung from the ceiling.

It swung gently.

At the center of the room sat Elena.

Her wrists were tied to the chair.

Her face was bruised.

“MOM!””

Mia ran forward.

“Stop!””

Adrian caught her.

A laser dot appeared on the wall beside his head.

Sniper.

“Don't move.””

The voice came from above.

Adrian slowly raised his hands.

“Let her go.””

The man stepped onto the metal staircase.

Marcus Vale.

Older than the photographs.

Gray threaded through his hair.

A scar ran from his temple to his jaw.

He held no visible weapon.

But Adrian knew better than to trust appearances.

Mia stared at him.

“You took my mother.””

Marcus looked at her.

“I protected her.””

“You kidnapped her!””

“No.””

His eyes moved toward Elena.

“She came with me.””

Elena shook her head.

“I had no choice.””

Marcus sighed.

“You always say that.””

Adrian stepped forward.

“You've been hiding from me for twelve years.””

Marcus looked at him.

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because your father told me to.””

“He's dead.””

“Yes.””

“Then why continue?””

Marcus went silent.

Adrian's eyes narrowed.

“Who pays you now?””

“No one.””

“Then why?””

Marcus looked directly at Mia.

“Because Victor wasn't the man who started this.””

Adrian's jaw tightened.

“What are you talking about?””

Marcus reached into his coat.

He pulled out a photograph.

Then another.

He dropped them onto the concrete floor.

The first showed Victor Cross.

The second showed Rebecca.

The third showed someone Adrian had never expected.

His own mother.

Adrian picked up the last photograph.

His breath stopped.

His mother stood beside Rebecca and Victor outside a private clinic.

On the back was a date.

The day Mia was born.

“What is this?””

Marcus looked at him.

“Your father wasn't protecting the family from Elena.””

Adrian stared at the photograph.

“Then what was he protecting?””

Marcus's gaze shifted to Mia.

“The truth about who ordered your daughter's disappearance.””

Elena closed her eyes.

Mia whispered:

“Who?””

Marcus answered.

“Your grandmother.””

Adrian went completely still.

“My mother?””

Marcus nodded.

“She was the one who told Victor what to do.””

“No.””

“She was terrified Mia would expose something.””

“What?””

Marcus looked at Adrian.

“A secret involving the Cross inheritance.””

Adrian stepped closer.

“Tell me.””

Before Marcus could answer, a gunshot exploded through the warehouse.

The overhead light shattered.

Mia screamed.

Adrian pulled her to the floor.

Another shot struck the metal railing.

“DOWN!””

Marcus dove behind a concrete pillar.

Elena's chair toppled sideways.

Adrian crawled toward her.

“Mia, stay down!””

“I’m here!””

He reached Elena and cut the rope around her wrists.

“Can you stand?””

“I think so.””

Adrian helped her up.

The warehouse filled with smoke and echoes.

Marcus shouted from behind the pillar.

“They're not here for Elena!””

Adrian looked toward him.

“Then who?””

Marcus pointed.

At Mia.

“They're here for your daughter!””

A car engine roared outside.

Headlights flooded through the broken doorway.

Adrian grabbed Mia.

“Run!””

But before they reached the exit, the SUV door opened.

A woman stepped out.

Elegant.

Calm.

Completely untouched by the rain.

Rebecca Hale.

She looked directly at Adrian.

Then at Mia.

And smiled.

“You really should have listened to me.””

Adrian's voice became ice.

“You kidnapped Elena.””

Rebecca shook her head.

“No.””

She looked past him toward Marcus.

“Marcus did.””

Marcus shouted:

“Liar!””

Rebecca raised a hand.

Two armed men appeared behind her.

Then she spoke softly.

“Adrian, I didn't bring you here to take your daughter.””

She smiled.

“I brought you here to return what she was carrying.””

Mia frowned.

“What am I carrying?””

Rebecca looked directly at her.

“The truth.””

She lifted a small silver locket.

Adrian recognized it immediately.

Elena had worn it for twelve years.

Rebecca opened it.

Inside was a tiny folded photograph.

And on the back, written in Elena's handwriting, were four words:

*The heir is not Adrian.*

Adrian stared.

Then looked at Mia.

May you like

And Rebecca said:

“Your father isn't who you think he is.””
