Chapter 7: The Man in the Dark

Mia screamed.

Adrian moved before he could think.

He reached into the darkness, found her shoulder, and pulled her behind him.

“Stay with me.””

“I can’t see!””

“I know.””

The hospital had fallen into chaos.

Emergency lights flickered red along the walls. Somewhere down the corridor, a cart crashed. A monitor began shrieking continuously, followed by hurried footsteps and shouted commands.

Adrian kept one hand around Mia’s arm.

“Don’t move.””

“But Mom—”

“She’s right there.””

He could hear Elena breathing.

Fast.

Shallow.

Alive.

That was enough.

Then the man spoke again.

“Adrian Cross?””

The voice came from the hallway.

Male.

Low.

Calm.

Far too calm for someone standing in a dark hospital during an emergency lockdown.

Adrian stepped toward the doorway.

“Who are you?””

No answer.

He listened.

One step.

Then another.

Someone was approaching.

Mia gripped his jacket.

“Dad…”

The word hit him like electricity.

Dad.

She had never called him that before.

Not once.

He looked at her in the darkness.

“I’m here.””

Another step.

Adrian’s phone vibrated.

He pulled it out.

A message from an unknown number.

*You should have stayed away from Elena.*

A second message appeared.

*Now you’ve brought Mia into it.*

Adrian’s blood ran cold.

He looked toward the hallway.

“You know me.””

Silence.

“Then come out.””

Nothing.

The red emergency light flashed again.

For a split second, Adrian saw a silhouette at the end of the corridor.

Tall.

Dark coat.

Then it disappeared.

“Stay here.””

He started forward.

Mia caught his arm.

“No!””

“I have to.””

“You said not to move.””

“I said you shouldn't move.””

“That’s the same thing.””

Despite everything, Adrian almost smiled.

Almost.

Then Elena cried out.

“Adrian!””

He turned immediately.

Her heart monitor was racing.

A nurse rushed into the room.

“Her rhythm is unstable!””

“Do something.””

“We’re trying.””

Adrian moved toward the bed.

Mia stood frozen.

“Mom?””

Elena reached for her.

“Mia…”

“I’m here.””

Mia grabbed her hand.

Elena’s fingers tightened around hers.

“Listen to me.””

“No.””

Mia shook her head.

“You don't have to say goodbye.””

“I’m not.””

“You said that before.””

“I know.””

Elena struggled to breathe.

“Adrian…”

He stepped closer.

“Yes?””

“Get her out.””

“Not without you.””

“Please.””

“No.””

“Adrian.””

He stared at her.

The same voice.

The same woman.

Still able to stop him with a single word.

But now there was fear in her eyes.

Not fear for herself.

For Mia.

“What do you know that I don't?”” he asked.

Elena whispered:

“He came back.””

“Who?””

She looked toward the door.

“The man Victor hired.””

Before Adrian could ask another question, the power came back.

The overhead lights snapped on.

The corridor was empty.

No intruder.

No footsteps.

Nothing.

The nurse exhaled.

“Security is checking every entrance.””

Adrian looked down.

On the floor just outside the room lay a small object.

A black metal key.

He bent and picked it up.

A number had been engraved on it.

*417.*

The room number.

He turned it over.

On the back was a tiny symbol.

A silver crown.

Adrian recognized it immediately.

His father’s private security company had used that symbol.

He clenched the key.

“My father.””

The nurse looked confused.

“Sir?””

“Nothing.””

Adrian slipped it into his pocket.

Mia was still holding Elena’s hand.

“Mom, who was that?””

Elena looked at Adrian.

“I don't know.””

“You do.””

Mia’s voice cracked.

“You always say you’re protecting me, but you never tell me from what.””

Elena closed her eyes.

“I was afraid.””

“So was I.””

Mia’s tears fell.

“I've been afraid my whole life.””

Adrian looked at her.

Then at Elena.

He understood something.

Protection without truth was just another kind of prison.

The doctor rushed in.

“We need to move her.””

“Where?””

“Secure cardiac ICU.””

“Then move her.””

The doctor nodded.

As nurses prepared the bed, Adrian stepped into the hallway.

His phone rang.

“Daniel.””

“Sir.””

“Tell me you found something.””

“I did.””

Adrian walked away from the hospital room.

“Talk.””

“I accessed an old security database tied to your father’s company.””

“And?””

“The man who entered the hospital was using an old identification code.””

“Whose?””

There was a pause.

“His name is Marcus Vale.””

Adrian stopped walking.

The name struck something buried in his memory.

“Vale.””

“Yes.””

“Where have I heard that?””

“He was part of your father’s private security team.””

“Was?””

“Officially, he died eleven years ago.””

Adrian stared into the empty corridor.

“Officially?””

“There was never a body.””

“Find him.””

“I’m trying.””

“Do it now.””

Daniel hesitated.

“Sir, there’s another problem.””

“What?””

“Rebecca is missing.””

Adrian’s eyes narrowed.

“When did she disappear?””

“During the power outage.””

He closed his eyes.

Of course.

“She took something.””

“Yes.””

“What?””

Daniel hesitated.

“The envelope from Elena.””

Adrian turned toward Elena’s room.

Rebecca had vanished with the letter.

The one thing that might explain everything.

“Find her.””

“I will.””

“No.””

Adrian’s voice hardened.

“Find her before anyone else does.””

He ended the call.

When he returned to Elena’s room, Mia was standing alone beside the bed.

“Elena is asleep,” the nurse said.

Mia turned.

“Where did you go?””

“I had a call.””

“About the man?””

“Yes.””

“Who is he?””

Adrian hesitated.

“Someone from my father’s past.””

Mia crossed her arms.

“You’re still hiding things.””

“I’m trying to keep you safe.””

“That's what Mom said.””

Adrian felt the words land.

“I know.””

“So tell me the truth.””

He looked at her.

“The man’s name is Marcus Vale.””

“Did he hurt Mom?””

“I don't know.””

“Did he hurt you?””

“No.””

“Then why are you scared?””

Adrian looked down at the key in his pocket.

“Because my father hired him.””

Mia went quiet.

“To do what?””

Adrian didn't answer.

She stepped closer.

“Dad.””

There it was again.

The word.

Soft this time.

Almost uncertain.

Adrian looked at her.

“To make sure your mother stayed away from me.””

Mia’s face changed.

“And me?””

“I don't know.””

“But he knew who I was.””

“Yes.””

“He came here because of me.””

“I think so.””

Mia sat down.

“What are we going to do?””

Adrian looked at his daughter.

The easy answer would have been to move her.

Send her somewhere safe.

Hire security.

Lock down every door.

That was how he had lived his entire life.

Control the variables.

Control the people.

Control the risks.

But Elena had spent twelve years running because powerful people controlled her life.

Adrian refused to make the same mistake.

“We're finding out everything.””

Mia nodded.

“Together?””

He looked at her.

“Yes.””

She gave a tiny nod.

For the first time, Adrian felt something that frightened him more than the man in the hallway.

Hope.

A nurse entered with a sealed evidence bag.

“Mr. Cross?””

Adrian turned.

“We found this in the stairwell.””

Inside the bag was Elena’s old envelope.

Except now it was open.

And empty.

“The letter?””

“Gone.””

Adrian’s jaw tightened.

“Where did you find the envelope?””

“Near the west stairwell.””

Mia stepped closer.

“Someone took the letter.””

“Yes.””

“Why would they care about Mom’s letter?””

Adrian looked at the envelope.

Because whoever took it was afraid of what it contained.

Before he could answer, Daniel called again.

Adrian put the phone on speaker.

“Tell me.””

“We traced Marcus Vale.””

“Where?””

“An abandoned warehouse near Pier Nine.””

Adrian grabbed his coat.

“I’m going.””

Mia stood.

“I’m coming.””

“No.””

“You promised we would do this together.””

“I’m not taking you into a warehouse.””

“Then take me somewhere safe.””

Adrian looked at her.

“I don't know where safe is anymore.””

Daniel suddenly spoke.

“Sir?””

“What?””

“There’s one more thing.””

“Say it.””

“We found the original employment file for Marcus Vale.””

Adrian waited.

Daniel’s voice lowered.

“He wasn’t hired by your father.””

Adrian froze.

“What?””

“He was hired by Rebecca Hale.””

Silence.

Mia looked at him.

“Rebecca?””

Daniel continued.

“And there’s a signature on the contract.””

“Whose?””

“Yours.””

Adrian stared at the phone.

“That’s impossible.””

“I know.””

“How old is the contract?””

“Twelve years.””

His stomach dropped.

The exact year Mia was born.

“Send it to me.””

“I already did.””

Adrian opened the file.

A scanned document appeared on his screen.

At the bottom was his name.

*Adrian Cross.*

But Adrian knew his own signature.

And this wasn't it.

It was a perfect imitation.

Someone had forged it.

Someone had used his identity to hire Marcus Vale.

Someone had planned all of this long before Adrian knew Mia existed.

Then another message appeared on his phone.

Unknown number.

*You’re looking in the wrong place.*

A second message followed.

*Marcus Vale didn’t come to hurt Mia.*

Adrian stared.

Then the third message arrived.

*He came to take her.*

Mia saw his expression.

“What?””

Adrian slowly lowered the phone.

Before he could answer, a crash erupted from inside Elena’s room.

They both turned.

The door swung open.

A nurse stumbled into the hallway, screaming.

“Mr. Cross!””

Adrian ran.

“What happened?””

The nurse pointed toward the empty bed.

Elena was gone.

The IV line had been disconnected.

The window was open.

And taped to the bed was a single white card.

Adrian ripped it free.

May you like

Four words were written across it.

*Bring Mia. Come alone.*
